Today GTP is blazing fast. This is great! But I wonder why it's so fast today when for the past three to four weeks is has crawled at a snail's pace, if I can get on at all. Did something change?

I added a few stickers to the side of the case. They do seem to help a little bit more than I was expecting.

Did you paint it yellow?
No, silly, those stickers would belong on cars. I added some Cray supercomputer stickers. They should add at least 50 MB of RAM, even though the server's stats have actually not showed an increase.

Well I'm back to barely being able to log on again. All the pages partially load and will not complete until I click the stop button. I cannot get to "myGTPlanet", I cannot edit posts or start new threads. I can usually reply to threads, but only in the "quick reply" box. Clicking "post reply" won't work. Can anyone explain why these specific things work and others don't. It's like a cycle. A week or tow of great performance and then a week or two of crap. I'm just glad I discovered clicking the stop button makes the page finish loading, usually. Sometimes the "quick reply" box never loads, or only parially loads (no buttons, a tiny little square, etc.).

Nothing wrong on my end... everything loaded fast today. Methinks that a number of the problems you've had in the past months aren't within Jordan's control...

What does the trace route look like, milefile? The site is running fast for me as well and the server does not appear to be stressed at the moment.

Go to your command prompt (in XP, that's Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), and type in tracert gtplanet.net. You'll then see a list of every server that the data travels through between you and GTP, and how fast each one responds to your requests.

Is this test possible on Windows 2000? My connection to GTP has been frightfully slow in the last 2 - 3 weeks. :(

Start > Run

Type "cmd" and hit return, this will give you the command prompt.

Actually, today the site is terribly slow for me as well. I'm going to have my host take a look at it.

In the few months that I have been here I have never had a problem, but today........ It's almost as slow as dialup :)

I've been experiencing slowdowns as well today - terrible speeds. Certain pages aren't even loading properly (buttons missing, pictures missing).

Don't think it's anything to do with that huge thread of photos from E3, do you?

Maybe. :-/
That thread killed my browser. I wasn't able to surf anywhere while it was loading, and when I did my whole PC froze.

That, and when I have had the patience to let a page load unhindered, it sometimes stops half way through leaving html code in spots.

I got an update from my host. Apparently, there was a fire in one of the underground conduits that contained the cables of one of our primary data providers. Until they can get it repaired, our traffic is being re-routed through other networks, slowing them down even further. There's really nothing that we can do until that problem gets fixed. :(

No, that page may take a while to load because of all the pictures, but it would not have any effect at all on the rest of the site.

The added traffic surely doesn't help... The most users online record was broken this morning, and there's always at least 300 people online all the time. In fact, it was re-broken just minutes ago, 522 people!

I dont want to sound like an Echo Echo Echo Echo Echo but the last couple days i've been avoiding this place because of the speed. Hopefully it'll be back to normal soon

Seems ok now. :)

In the past it has progressively slowed during the day though :crossfingers:

Make that 557 ~ "Most users ever online was 557 on 05-14-04 at 8:36 AM"

Major bummer with the fire. I have never seen the GT4 forum so busy. With all this e3 hype its overloading!
