Ok so ive got a 2001 Volvo S40 2.0 SE and the cars was just in a ccident with one of those 2 tonne jeeps. So the car got repaired and a week later the car was due for a service so we took it in today and they said that the catalyser was blown and needs replacing. Whats the likelyness of the catalyser being broken due to the accident.

Im not too sure where the cat is placed on the s40 i suspect just before the exhaust exit but obviously I would like my insurance company to pay for the new catlyser do you think I have a leg to stand on. The volvo mechanic himself even said that it was very rare for the cat to just blow especially due to the cars age and milage it has covered.

Thanks

I've got a good idea just take the stupid thing off, you don't need that piece of crap to slow your volvo down.

That was the first thing to come out my mouth aswell. But the cars nearly 5 years old now so that mean MOT time soon which it would fail.

well I guess you have to fix it :yuck: but o well i feel sorry for you :guilty: but i still think you should take it off and screw the emmison *****s

And the guy at the emissions inspection station couldn't care less what you think about the regulations. He'll put the sniffer in the tailpipe and roll his little mirror under the car, see it's been removed, and send you on your way with a failed inspection form.

At pushing 5 years old, it's perfectly possible that the ceramic honeycomb inside the catalytic convertor has failed. It's not unknown at all. It is also possible that it broke loose during the accident. There's really no way to tell unless you noticed a sudden loss of performance after the accident (assuming the car was driveable) or since the body has been repaired. You can claim it has suffered the problem only since the wreck and try to get the insurance company to cover it.

Cats aren't hideously expensive, and you can get a third-party one rather than a genuine Volvo piece if you are looking to save a little money.

Personally I'd prefer a catalyser with a little less performance and not feel as guilty when pumping hazardous fumes. Unless you drive your car at its peak performance ALL the time its not like its going to matter. Plus if you did, the catalyser hurting your performance would be least of your worries when you car constantly needs parts replacing.

Plus if you fit a catalyser you can fit a more powerful engine and not do much more damage to the enviroment :sly: Should ban diesel cars which may produce less CO but pump out loads of other crap.

As Jeremy Clarkson once said 'Save 20p and give everyone cancer'.

Blown Catalyser is not a problem, easy to replace and shouldnt cost you much.

Im so glad we (Australia) dont have to go for emissions tests :D

What's a Catalyser?

(looks under his older car... nothing but miles of straight pipes)... I don't see it...

We have emissions here but no visual inspection... you can have a huge hairdryer of a turbo and a straight-pipe underneath the car and it won't matter as long as it doesn't blow black smoke.

You can get some high performance catalytics for not much... will flow better, stay clean, and keep your car happy. Not a big problem.
