I have a question, my friends dad owns a 2001 BMW M5, and is considering a new car, and the car he is considering is a 2004 BMW 6 series convertable (645 i think?) and this means he will sell the M5, what do you guys think of this? i really dont know much about the 6 series, so thanks in advance

I think it depends very much of his needs for the car; family transport V sports car for one guy.

Based on the pictures I have seen, the new M5 looks much better then the 6 series. To the best of my knowledge they will both have V8's (although for some reason I thought the 6 Series would have a V10...)

For me the 6 series is a Supercar wannabe, and it may find it hard up against Porsche 911 Turbos and SL55's.

The 645Ci is a price competitor to the Carrera, not the Turbo. It is really more of a GT than a sports car; closer in spirit to an SL Mercedes or Jaguar XK8. However, I'm sure that BMW has tuned the suspension and steering to give the 911 a run for its money in the twisty stuff.

In the US, the 645Ci and base Carrera are within a couple of thousand dollars on the sticker.

It will have better handling compared to an E39 M5, but slower in a straightline. ~325 hp vs. ~400hp.

i'd say thats a hard choice. their both pretty close (besides horsepower) but overall i'd say it'd be ok either way, just depending if your a fan of the M series or 6 series.

hey wasn't there a story on the New M5 having a V10 500HP? or did i like make that up in some creepy way? i thought i read it but i dont remember.

It will have better handling compared to an E39 M5, ...

say what? are you telling me that theres going to be a grand tourer from BMW that outperforms their halo car?

you need to share when you got stuff that good my friend.

The 645 is the same length and weight as the E39 M5, but five years newer. Why wouldn't it outhandle it? Keep in mind the E39 M5 has been cancelled awaiting the next model.

i,m thinking he should go for the M6...but i'm not sure if it is real or when it is coming out, but I have heard rumors of it using the new M5 V10

Sure. The 'good stuff' is active roll stabilization. Its a pretty neat system that varies the stiffness of the sway bars on the fly via a couple of small motors mounted to the subframe. So in a straight line, you have zero roll stiffness except what is provided by the springs/shocks. When you corner, the motors tighten their grip and give you a super-aggresive setting--and totally flat cornering. All new 6s get this stuff.

I drove a E60 530i with this setup. It's the shiznit. It handled better then my M3/4, no question. Turn-in is astronomical --sharper than an S2000 or Boxster and about on par with an Evo 8.

Mag testing confirms how well the new cars corner: ~.90g on the skidpad. By way of comparision, the E46 M3 only manages about ~.87 and the E39 M5 ~.86  I can only imagine the a new M5 with active roll stab

Take a deep whiff, my friend.. the future is upon you.

usually i remember all those features that the new cars have. i forgot them coz i think they were introduced on the 5 series. so i apologize for my lack opf foresight.

but you are right. the gubbins that comprises the new electronic suspension stuff is the sheezy.

my dad was thinking of getting the 645ci when he gets rid of his 330xi later this year.its between that or the new 5 series, but he may even get another 3 series because he needs the awd for where we live and i'm pretty sure the 5 series is rwd(i may be wrong).

ok now he changed his mind, his company is doing well so he is thinking of getting a porsche 911 Turbo and a Audi S8 for the winter....I dont know about you guys but I like that idea better!! he was so happy that he let me and my buddy dive around in the M5 all over the city last night...it was great!:D

Hey ///M-SPEC, besides base price you cannot even begin to compare a 911 to a 6 series bimmer. My dad has a 911 Carrera 4 cabrio, base price $84,000, after options a $100,000 car. Lets see, a regular rwd carrera is about the same price and goes 0-60 in 5.0 sec and 1/4 mile is 13.4 @ about 106 MPH. A 6 series does the 0-60 sprint in 5.5 seconds making it much slower even though it has more hp. So that would then mean that a 1/4 mile time would be around 14 sec. So get your facts straight. If you want to compare to a Carrera, you compare an M3 which runs a 4.8 and a 13.3/13.5 1/4 mile.

Great. Your daddy paid a hundred grand so he can run mid 13s. I'm impressed

Go back and practice your reading comprehension on my post, junior. I said the 6 is a price competitor to the Carrera. I also stated in the following sentence that the 6 is more a GT than a sportscar, closer to an XK-8 than 911. Nowhere in my post did I say the 6 was an equal in a straight line to a Carrera. So how about you get your head put on straight?

My god. What do they teach in school these days?

They apparently don't teach you that balls are nothing without a brain to keep them out of trouble, that's for sure.

Hey man, I just thought you were comparing in more than price. In terms of price though, yes they are very good competitors. Anything in terms of performance is quite one sided in favor of the Carrera. What kind of car do you drive? Maybe you could help me with this. I have to pick a new car out. Here is the situation, I ama sophomore in college and if I get a car like the RSX Type-S my dad will give me his Porsche for graduation, my other option is to get something along the lines of a G35 Coupe and not get the Porsche, which would you do? A couple months ago I ws supposed to get an M3 Conv. but the deal fell through(long story). So what are your thoughts those cars? Also, do you have any other suggestions for cars in place of those? I only like European cars.

As my name implies, I drive an M3. Pics Here, at bottom of page .

If I were in your position, I'd pass on the RSX-S. Its not a bad car, but its not something you're going be happy in if a 911 or M3 is your goal. I remember being particularly underwhelmed with the handling.

Truthfully, I dislike the vert versions of the 911 and M3. To me, the weight penalty is not worth the top down option. The M3 vert in particular is a bloated pig (3700lbs). Why not just get an S2000 or M Roadster?

Perhaps you can 'settle' for a used E36 M3 or 2.7 Audi S4 for a few years. Mod it to keep you happy, then pick up whatever you can talk your dad into. If you want a Porsche, look into a 951.

///M-Spec

PorscheC4 if you only liike europeon cars why are you even considering the G35 coupe?

I like European and Japanese cars. The thing is M-Spec and all you others my dad will give me the Porsche he has and then buy himself a new one if I did not make that clear. M-Spec, even though my dads car is a conv. it only weights about 3100 or 3200 pounds. So actually extremely light for a convert. The M3 conv weight in at almost 3800. The car is still runs a 13.4/13.5. WHat does ur 1995 M3 run?
