BMW has stolen the headlines at the Beijing show by unveiling its Gran Coupe coupe, a five-metre, four-door, coupe-like saloon that’s rumoured to be headed into production as a new 8-series flagship.

The Gran Coupe has been designed to fuse the abilities of a GT and a sports car. It’s roof is 100mm lower than a current 7-series saloon, and its rear quarters slightly more restricted. As such, it’s expected to sire a direct production rival for the Maserati Quattroporte, Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera.

See the official BMW Concept Gran Coupe pics

“It’s true that the Gran Coupe points to a specific model, a saloon with the presence and elegance of a 7-series but a more dynamic, sporty character: much more of a driver’s car,” says BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. “We’re convinced that we should make a car like this.”

The Gran Coupe’s production version will come along in 2012, according to BMW insiders. Underneath it will use the same ‘backbone’ platform that underpins the current 5-series, 7-series and 5 GT. The car will offer the same mix of six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as those cars, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Gran Coupe picks up on the work started four years ago with the Concept CS show car, which appeared at the Shanghai motor show in 2007.

“We all liked the idea of a more dynamic flagship four-door back then,” explains van Hooydonk, “but we put the car ‘on ice’ while working on ‘Project I’ [BMW’s new Megacity electric-only brand], which has been a bigger prority.”

“Now we’ve had the opportunity to revisit the CS and update it, and I think everyone inside of BMW is pleased with the results.”

“We drew inspiration from classic BMWs like the 3.0 Csi. Our intention was to create a car with a distinct character: I’m hoping you can tell that it’s not a 7-series replacement. The Gran Coupe is much lower, and a little wider than a 7, and has a much more fluid roofline.”

And will BMW bring back the 8-series badge for the car? “It’s not my decision to make,” says van Hooydonk. “I don’t think of this car as an 8-series, but our marketing department may think differently. Either way, their work is just beginning, and I know that often it can take longer than our design work!”

As well as testing the water for a BMW-built rival for the Audi A7, the Gran Coupe is intended to distill and concentrate BMW’s design values. As such, it’s likely to have a far-reaching influence throughout the styling of many of BMW’s future model lines.

That means we should expect to see the Gran Coupe’s long wheelbase, vaulted bonnet, shark nose, rearward set glasshouse, low silhouette and short front overhang become part of BMW’s trademark design language, as well as its asymmetrical kidney grille, wide frontal air intake and frameless doors.

Ignoring some of the BS in the press release, this looks like a stunning return to form from BMW styling wise IMO.

Look what the Merc CLS started! It does look pretty good though, maybe BMW haven't lost their way as much as I thought. The rear 3/4 view is especially nice. Looks enormous!

I saw my first 5 series GT a few days ago, I was rubber necking at its ugliness so much I nearly drove into the kerb!

I like it. It looks really neat.
I don't like the shape of the kidney grille for some reason(although I am just basing this on this 1 picture), but other than that its great!

It does look big, but I think that's a function of the lower roofline... makes the length and width look porportionally much bigger.

I was surpised by the 5 GT... I saw one for the first time on the M1 a couple of weeks back and it wasn't half as bad as I thought it was going to be (it was black, with HUGE wheels)... horses for courses I guess.

Oh my. I.. I see a new BMW that I actually like, and it's a huge land yacht? I must be getting old..:nervous: But yes, I want to see more of that..

Sure it wasn't an X6 with small wheels? ;)

100mm lower than a 7 series is quite a lot so that will make it look much bigger...it's only 300mm longer than my car so it's not ridiculously long.

The 5 GT I saw was silver and TBH I thought it was an X6 as I drove up behind it, there’s a hell of a lot of car at the back of that thing. It would probably stand out less in black and like all new shapes will become less unusual.

I think BMW are going in the right direction style wise at the moment. I loved the old Z4 but the new one looks great too.

EDIT: Seems I'm not the only one who thinks the 5GT looks like an X6

While I'm at who let BMW call it the GT 5 series??? Now I get a page full of BMW results when I'm searching for GT5 news :grumpy:

LOVE IT !! I say bring it on!! i wish bmw would lower a bit the price of their 5 series, and let this one be the higher end, more exclusive version of the 5... looks like a +$65k car.

Stunning.

For the record, I also like the X6 very much, and the 5GT is far better in person than in pictures.

8 Series, huh? I'd prefer if it stayed as a 2 door sports car, but this looks very promising. I like it.

Wow, I really like this. It somehow manages to look sporty but also 'grand' at the same time. The black paint looks superb too.

I think the proportions look really bad. Looking at the front and stopping at the front doors, you almost think its a Z4 or something, with the very long hood and the cockpit being pretty far back. But then you've got the full size cabin of a full-size sedan and it just doesn't work for me.

Interest has been raised on my behalf, but not that much. This could remove the Passat CC from being the best-looking car of this type, but I'm not totally sure of that.

Quite a looker, the front is a little flat from the profile but, and I still have trouble 4 doors being called a "Coupe".

I think it looks stunning. Give us some real pictures then we'll be able to tell for sure. I feel like the pictures are pretty set up by putting a black car in such poor light with such a dark background.

The only thing that bothers me about the design is the front overhang in the side profile. Because of the flat face and sloping hood is makes the front overhang look longer than the rear, and that combined with the otherwise proper rear wheel drive proportions makes it look a bit like dumbo in the front. Move the front wheels a tad further forward and it wouldn't look so awkward.

It looks stunning!! I really love the design of this car and bringing it as an 8-Series, could be good too...

Anyways, real picture is here.

Looks awesome isn't it? More pics can be found on the link below.

Looks like a CLS and the 7-series got mushed together. Badly. It's not as ugly as the CLS but worse than a normal 7 IMO.

Give me a VW CC even though it's F/AWD and smaller. Interior is better than the CLS, looks better than this Gran Coupe or the CLS, etc etc.

The rear looks like fugly Mitsubishi lights. The rest is great.

I hope they don't go calling it the 6 GT like the BMWBlog article suggests. Particularly when the current 6 is the Grand Tourer of the two.

The Gran Coupe Concept has been greenlighted for production and yet to be confirmed might be badged under the name 6-Series GT. I think this is the only choice because naming this car under the 8-Series is much dumber and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. As what Autocar UK said:

Autocar UK
“Given the 8-Series went extinct in 1999, the decision to dust off the nameplate didn’t make a whole lot of sense for BMW – especially considering the cost of launching an all-new vehicle name. Moreover, the 6-Series is essentially a modern interpretation of the old 8-Series, making the business case for the revival of the 8-Series name that much harder.”

The production however, will begin in 2012 and expect the car to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011 for the production version.

The production version seems to be ready and the Germany pricing has just been announced. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe starts at 79,500 Euros. It's very expensive...

The higher end 650i GC will be priced at 92,600 Euros and there is also an X-Drive option for the 650i GC. At this moment, the 6 Series GC is the most expensive compared to the CLS and A7. The Mercedes CLS 500 starts at 80,560 Euros.

Performance comparison between the 650i GC and the CLS 500, it seems like the 650i GC has the edge, but only just. Both has a high performance V8 but the 650i GC has about 445HP to CLS 500's 408HP.

The car goes on sale in the US in June 2012 and their pricing has yet to be announced. Currently, the whole line up is 640i, 650i and 650i X-Drive.

Meanwhile, for those who would love to explore on what BMW offers on the 6 Series GC, the online configurator is already up and ready.

Before I forgot, the M-Sport package is also ready and will be available at the day of the launch.
