How long have the Germans been making utes for based on M3's and AMG Merc's? All I know about the ute is that it's an Australian invention that combines the normal car platform and a pickup tray. That is the basis or what I know about the ute. I didn't know that these were made out of Australia, I thought all other utility vehciles of this type were pick ups. What has driven BMW, Mercedes, Audi to such madness to make ute versions of the M3, Q7 and god knows what else?

I'm familiar with the Ford and GM/Holden utes cause I see them everywhere. It's just that these M3 utes and these weird ones I only found out about the other day.

It was built by one of the BMW staff for thier private collection/joke back in 2011. I think it was revealed at a BMW anniversary of some sort, M3 anniversary. Here is a video unveiling press conference for it, it was the first time I heard laughter at an event like that, when they eventually showed the rear of the car.
