BMW has announced that it is to take over the Sauber Formula 1 team and establish its own works squad from 2006.

"For the first time in the history of BMW, we will be entering the Formula 1 contest under the BMW name," announced BMW board member Dr. Burkhard Goschel.

"We will be taking responsibility for the engine, for the chassis, for the entire package.



"It will enable us to demonstrate our competence as a car manufacturer.



"We do not expect to have instant success, but we want to be a world champion in this class."



The new factory team will take over and expand Sauber’s existing Hinwil base.



"I am very happy that I can hand over this team to good hands," said Peter Sauber.



BMW is currently in the middle of a long-term partnership with Williams – a relationship that has turned increasingly sour in recent months.

Dr Goschel said that BMW would be happy to continue supplying engines to Williams in 2006.

“We would be happy if Williams would still use BMW engines next season,” he said.

Williams is understood to have already entered into discussions with other engine suppliers, including Honda and Cosworth.



BMW Motorsport Director Dr. Mario Theissen explained BMW’s belief that it would achieve more success as a full works team than as an engine supplier.



“The decision is based on two insights,” he said.



“Firstly, that the influence of the engine on the winning potential of the overall package has diminished.

“The car, tyres and drivers play a greater role than they used to.

“The second insight is that an optimum overall package can only be achieved with a fully integrated team and coherent processes throughout.



"Over the past few years we have proved that we can produce an excellent F1 engine. Maybe the best, I would say.



"Now we are faced with the more sophisticated task of handling everything else."



BMW initially offered Sauber a straightforward customer engine supply deal for 2006, before seeing the opportunity to take control of and rebrand the team.



The current plan is for the existing Sauber team to remain largely intact, but under the BMW name and management.



The BMW management preferred not to discuss potential drivers at this stage.



The paddock rumour mill has already suggested that current Williams driver Nick Heidfeld would be a strong candidate for a seat with the new team.

Hm. So what does that mean for JV's contract? He has a 2 year deal.
It's pretty much guaranteed that Heidfeld will race with BMW in '06, given his strong performance this year and the fact that he's German.
 
its an interesting move, with peter saubers experiance in F1 and BMW experiance in everything it could be very good for them..maybe a suprise package for next season

Will they gonna keep the Sauber name i hope so because is a good name for a small team
 
Is Peter Sauber still going to be a part of the team? I've read that he's going to step down as team boss. But it never said anything about Peter not being invovled in F1.
 
pretty sure hes still involved, he just ist the boss, or at least, not the boss of the BMW board. No, the Suaber name will not remain
 
The team will be known as BMW F1, a factory race team.

I assume the cars will be white'ish and look like all their other race cars.

Peter Sauber will be kept on as an "advisor" and alot of the staff will be kept on, though the team and it's resources will have nothing to do with the name "Sauber" anymore.

I bet Massa will get a race drive next year and if not at least a 3rd driver (he is far too good at that). I expect JV to be sent back to Canada where he belongs. BMW is too smart to put up with his BS. So who does that leave? Alex Wurz! Ralf Schumacher (for some reason BMW likes him...they might try to pull him from toyota)....
 
Good to hear BMW will finally have a full factory team to call their own. I'd guess their driver lineup will be Heidfeld and Massa. JV definitley won't have a seat at the team next year unless he really starts to shine in the very near future.
 
well i remember watching that ralf liked toyota because it was a german team. I have no idea if that's true (cough....toyota), but he seemed pretty happy there in the little featurette.

If Scott Speed gets a the race seat for next year at Red Bull, then what about the other drivers? Will they remain as testers, or possibly have a future with BMW?

Well alot of the driver changes depend on Jenson Button. The prospects to join Williams sure don't look as good as they did last year. BAR seems like a stonger choice (that is if they can get past their current FIA cheating funk). So if JB stays with BAR I don't think you'll see many changes in driver line-ups. BMW's team will most likely be Massa and a 3rd driver, Wurz would be my best guess.

However if JB does move to williams then it gets interesting...

-JB to williams
-Nick H to BMW or 3rd driver at Williams
-DC to BAR (outside chance of Rubens too I have read or both I have read as well)
-Liuzzi, Klein, Speed shuffle around in the red bull seats, most likely Liuzzi stays all season given it is now Ferrari Red Bull

and most interestingly who gets the 2nd seat at Ferrari if Rubens leaves???? Remember whoever this is will be taking over for Schumi in the near future, I don't see Ferrari going with a young inexperienced driver like Liuzzi, that is that the "Ferrari b-team" of Red Bull will be for.

My $$$ is saying Alonso, especially if Renault don't win either title..... Kimi will be far too hard to get out of McLaren and frankly the McLaren seems stronger in the next few years than Ferrari (unless there is a switch for all teams to Bridgestone in the next year or two...)

Which then raises the question of who gets the open Renault seat??? The only person I can think of, of the current drivers, is Trulli...though the chances of him a) going back to Renault and b) being allowed to leave Toyota are slim to none. The vibe I got from the Toyota team was that they all adore Trulli, they like Ralf but the team adores Trulli....

And what about the young Finn...Heiki Kovelavian (sp?).....he is fast but inexperienced. I don't see him getting a race seat without another season or two of testing.
 
I thought it was Kovaleinen. He might even fill a renault seat. Isn't the program he is/was in sponsored by renault?

Yup, he is in the Renault development program but is very inexperienced, I can't see Renault/Flavio putting him in a full race seat next season (if they loose Alonso).. Like i said he needs a few testing/3rd driver seasons or a race seat in a Minardi/Midland (Jordon)....
 
oh, of course. I was talking about more down the line when he ascends from rookie-status.

Massa is really talanted and he showed himself since he was gone to Ferrari testing back in 2003
 
BMW, I have a feeling that its going to be successful unlike other teams *cough Jordan cough*. I expect their car to improve over the season might even be in the top five.

How much do you wanna bet British racing green, especially if they get their engines from Cosworth. An English chassis with an English engine with (maybe) an English driver and an Aussie driver....either that or red/blue/white or some such thing.
 
british racing green? I think it'd be too jaguarish. we should have F1 paintjob contests. lol.
 
I reakon massa might just get the nod over JV for the other seat.... he's just quite simply a better driver right now

If Williams choose the Honda engine for '06 I dont have a problem:sly:
That's why i support BAR, Honda is my favourite manufacturer and Button is my favourite driver (he's a brit like me:sly:)

Why does it have headlights? Is that new for the 2006 regulations? Headlights in the front wing?

I don't think BMW will use "paisley" in their color scheme either...

naw, it's the old minardi. the old jordan had the diagonal nose-struts.

edit: d'oh! the 2002 jordans had it diagonally....i still think it's the minardi though.
 
The 2003 Jordans also had diagonal struts.

And I think you're right, it's very similar to the 2003 Minardi (could almost be 2004 too), the nose-struts are slightly different but they are likely to have changed over the year.

Headlights were just a joke, and they were just supposed to be painted on /or stickers not an actual headlight!!

I spent like 2 minutes on it, hence...:crazy:

THe original car was a BAR... dont remember the year...
