You also have to consider they are not the same type of handhelds. NDS/GBA's great gameplay is limted to what they can do traditionally. where psp has no real limit with traditional gaming, no one wants to make 1993 quality gameplay games for psp. I get nearly the same gameplay with emulated snes. Just look at all the top DS/GBA games, mostly cutesy, classic gameplay style games or gimmicky type games. Have a look at ign's top GBA/DS games. If you like that kinda stuff stay away from psp.

But can your DS handle this... PSP spiinter Cell

PSP's goal was to take console gaming out side. But I know you know that already. To me the psp will be like the 360 and revolution, they will co exists by having different types of games with different capabilties.

A pure gaming rating would give the psp something around a 7/10

And besides, you can't play music, view your pics or watch your movies and videos on a DS. Like LaBounti said, all the best games are kiddy ones. Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, all that stuff. With the PSP, you get some of the more teen/adult appealing games, like GTA:LCS or Burnout or the upcoming GT Mobile. And besides, I don't play online, so that's not a factor for me.

I use mine mainly as an MP3 player, I use it to play music in my car (bought an adapter thing so it goes through the speakers) and it works well. Recently completed the story of GTA, but I do admit its getting a little boring now with no decent new games out, but thats true of every platform recently. I bought an adapter thing too so I can go online with it, £7, well worth it.

I own three launch titles. Lumines, wipeout and Ridge racer. I play them still. Not bored but not ready to upgrade for newer games.

Mario Kart DS
THPS
Advance Wars DS
Metriod Pinball

Those, IMO, are not "kiddie" games, if you want to fall into that stereo type of the average gamer, fine, but you all haven't even played enough DS games, obviously, to justify your claims of it being "kiddie".

No matter how you look at it, the point of a game is to be entertaining, not "teen/adult" oriented. Who cares about graphics? Half of the games on PSP take WAY TO LONG to load, and at that you only can play them on the go for what, 3 hours on a charge?

I charge my DS about once every 2 days, and I play it on the go a lot. Hell, I play truama center a LOT, it's a great game, with a great concept, and it's fun.

PSP offers me what? The same things all my higher priced electronics already did, and a few ports that I don't want to play, very few original titles. I played GTA:LCS and beat it rather quickly, after that, I sold it, because it doesn't have anything else going for it. Sure, it's great for some, but as far as portable handheld gaming...the DS takes the cake imo.

Oh, and please do not compare the quality of DS games with "1993" video games, that's rather...well, it's incorrect and you know it, don't bring a bias here. You all should know I love sony, and I love every other company, but the PSP just doesn't have any aim to any demographic whatsoever, and it suffers from that IMO.

Nintendo Wi-Fi > my life, lol.

Not to mention there's an awesome fighter coming out in Japan that I will hop on in an instant. 4 player online 2D fighting action is just what the doctor ordered.

I think I own more PSP games than I do PS2 games.

Lumines
Burnout: Legends
Virtua Tennis
Ridge Racer
NFS: Underground Rivals
Wipeout Pure
GTA: LCS

No one looks cool with a DS, but with a PSP? Oh, yeah.

I need some ideas here. Calamity being that i only use the PSP at home, and what i could do on it i can do on my PC or my PS2. Where do you guys go to use your PSP out of the house? Do you take it to town and play games while walking around/shopping? Do you um.. well actually, taking it to town was my only thought.

There must be some room in my life for my PSP, i just need to find out where that is.

I use it when in car (if I don't drive) I use it as an mp3 player pretty much everywhere, when I take the bus from school ( 1h ) I like to listen to some vids, when I work outside I use it as an Mp3, when I train Ilisten to music, etc. You can use it pretty much anywhere you want.

Yes i'm aware you can use it where you want, the problem is, i'm coming to the conclusion that i don't spend enough time outside at all.

I do drive.
I have a W800 as my MP3 player.
I drive to work, and pretty much everywhere so don't use buses or trains.

Wifi was the only thing i used it for at home, but i got bored of the slow connection, the slow rendering. The gimmick of being able to post online while sitting on the toilet got boring quickly.

Another thing that makes the PSP useful is you can use it wherever in the house, meaning you can use it in the front room to be around your family. It just isn't right being in your room all day alone without being seen or talking to anyone.

That's if you don't live on your own otherwise it wouldn't mean a thing.

Well I didnt call them kidding games but Tony hawk for psp is better than DS, like Burnout, spiderman 2 and every other mlutiplatfrom game, that shows they are not equal and offer different gameplay experiences. I was speaking from a genral opinion. I agree that the games are good fo DS, I just dont think they are the same type of games. If the point is just to be entertained Then splinter Cell would never have a chance aginst nintendogs.

but the PSP just doesn't have any aim to any demographic whatsoever, and it suffers from that IMO

It has a moderate start and there will be many more games in the future. The Katamari game and Street fighter alpha 3 should be hot titles and SFA3 was the GBA game I played the most and i wet my pants learning a better portable version was coming out.

Its one thing to like the DS but its another to say psp is no good.

Okay, let me further illustrate my points.

PSP is good, and it's a great piece of hardware. I'm not knocking it, or anyone's taste in video games. However, as far as gameplay variety, and fresh new content, the DS is better overall. Perhaps this is just opinion, but it is how I see it.

The PSP has gotten many "flagship" titles, however, it is fact that they are more of an after thought, stripped from features, and ported from original titles on home consoles. They don't offer me anything that I don't already have at home on my 60" TV.

On the DS, I'm getting new gameplay, great new features, fun new games, and online that is much more stable than that of PSP (as has been my experience through THPS, MKDS, and Animal Crossing).

Also, there is a fighting game coming out in Japan based on a popular anime, called Bleach, wich is being developed by Treasure (who make great 2D fighters) and will feature 4player wireless play, as well as 4 player nintendo wi-fi (online).

It just seems that DS is making steps towards games, while the PSP is moving in so many different directions it's not really "moving". it's just my opinion that it's not really that fun any more.

edit: also, many of you are knocking the DS when you haven't even played it. I KNOW for a fact if you all played nintendogs for a few minutes you'd think it was fun, regardless of your insecurities. Same goes for a TON of other titles on DS, including the "kiddie" games.

I agree, PSP is very good for everything, except games. They are good looking and everything, but they offer me the same things that has been done many times before (It's okay though, because GTA lCS is very good, but still nothing really "new")

The DS, on the other side, gives new gameplay never seen before. Nintendogs seems really kiddie or japanese, but it's really well done and just relaxing, opposed to say a online FPS where you get owned by people who play the game 24/7. I have yet to play Trauma center or Phoenix Wright ( a game where you're an advocate )
but as soon as I get some cash I'll buy them.

So, in conclusion both are excellent on their own.

Well my friend has a DS and burns through games(buys em beats em sells em),I told him not to get a psp if he just wants to play games. I play DS when i'm at ebgames. Infact DOA4 was just sitting there but i was playing Mario Kart for DS.

Even if i liked Nintendogs it wont make me buy the system. PSP replaced my GBA. I'm no hardcore gamer one handeld is all i need. and one that lets me do more with it is the better choice for me. As I said i own just 3 games all launch titles and I've had it since early June. I just cant get into cute games.

I hate chopped psp ports(EA). The games I own are not ports.

So, in conclusion both are excellent on their own.

Thats pretty much what I said too. PSP's goal was to have a poratble playstation. Not a revolution of gameplay.

If you guys arn't playing games on your psp and using it as an mp3 player what do you do for music?? it doesn't have an HD and the cards go up to what? 1gb? What's the batt. life like too?

I mostly listen to music in my car(Mazda3 5-door :)) I use my psp mostly at work cuz i dont feel like talking to co-workers. PSP is not a first choice mp3 player(or a good second), its like a bonus kinda like its movie playback.

You can get 2GB but they're pretty expensive. I got the giga pack, which came with a 1gb card. I usually don't have any problems with my batt. I just charge it every night and when I listen to music it goes into sleep mode and it takes less batt. power.

Hmm... ok. What the internet front looking like so far? is there any way to get streaming anything on it or d/l stuff to it?

I never tested the online capabilities since I got my PSP, but from IGN:

Saving Images and Video
You can save an image by hovering the pointer over it, bringing up the main menu and then selecting File->Save Image. Easy as pie.
You can save image, video or other file type links by hovering over the link, bringing up the main menu and selecting File->Save Link Target. If you save a file that the PSP can view/play (like an MP3 file) it'll show up in the PSP's main menu under that menu option like normal, so you can download audio or pictures from the web and then use them on the PSP menu when you're not online. Other files will be downloaded to the "PSP/Common folder", although if you wish to put them somewhere else (for example, put videos in a video folder), you can change the folder by tapping up and choosing a different folder.

The PSP as a web browser is simply a novelty and nothing more. Not once have I ever been in an area with wi-fi where I could not access a computer to navigate the web much more efficiently.

Also, again, I ask why you say the "DS" has "cute" games.

I'm not trying to insult you, but don't be so bull headed when it comes to games, especially if you aren't willing to give them a chance. Many of those "cute" games, play significantly better, and provide more entertainment, than mindless games like GTA etc. (not knocking GTAfor you hardcore "I wanna argue with that" fans).

I don't know, the DS seems more aimed at games, I'll leave it at that.

Also, LaBounti, of your three launch titles, two are essentially ports of older games, with few updates, and again, nothing to marvel over, Wipeout has been around for ages, Ridge Racer was nothing new by anymeans. If anything Lumine's was amazing for a puzzle game.

But look at the DS, it has much more going for it, again, IMO.

Metriod Prime: Hunters
Mario Kart DS
Nintendogs
Kirby's Canvas
Metriod Pinball
Mario n Luigi: Partners in Time
GuiltyGear: Dust
Animal Crossing
FF Crystal Chronicles
Resident Evil (even though I'm not a fan of the series)

I don't know, the list of games coming out for DS are higher, as are their "fresh factor". Call me crazy...I'm just hard to sell on a $250 accessory that really doesn't have anything fun to play on the go...or for that long.

To me anything "Mario" is cute. Kirby, Nintendogs, animal crossing. I'm not knocking any games or saying there aren't any good ones for DS. They just cant sell me on buying one when i have a portable system that does more. Like the 360, its just not something i need right now.

I'm not huge on homebrew but right now I'm playing Secret of Mana for the first time, I am stuck but i dont play for that long in my daily schedule. Those 30min to an hour brusts are perfect. I did however beat Mega Man 2 from begining to end one day at my GF's house. I'm big on classic games not new games with classic(-1993) gameplay. So i play NES and SNES on my psp.

Maybe we should start a DS vs PSP thread then :) As I'm not trying to spark one of those classic "tha_con dissagree" and goes off topic threads.

What about a Video iPod vs. PSP argument? :dopey:

I know it's like comparing an Element vs xB but it seems inevitable. :dunce:

Video iPod...

Pro
1. Smaller
2. Does have games (looking into adding or hacking more in)
3. 30gb HD (holds many Videos, Mp3s and if nessary Pics)
4. Much less costly (PSP $20-50 a game? vid $15 plus carrying around discs)

Con
1. Not much for gaming (even then the controls would suck ass)
2. No internet connection
3. Scratches really really easy
4. Cases suck and will still scratch

5. iBoons
6. Batt. life during movies (external batt. avalible)

PSP...

Pro
1. Internet
2. Gaming
3. Multiplayer gaming (which would be non-existant for me)
4. Movies, Mp3s, and Pic
5. Drag and drop? (No proprietary software to deal with?)

Con
1. No built-in storage
2. Bulky (doesn't fit in pocket especially since a case is inevitible)

3. Carrying discs around would drive me nuts. Not to mention scratched? (never seen them)
4. Pay each disk and for Mem card.
5. Batt. life?

This is all based on that "I" find "I" wouldn't play the games. For ex. When GT4m comes out I probably wouldn't play it simply because it's so "hand held". I barely play GT4 at home.

Anyone else agree?

So going to be connecting my PSP up to my 360 on Thursday. Still the PSP beat iPod nano and Video to the best gadget of 2005 in either T3 mag or Stuff Mag.

Plus PSM or PSW said there may be a PSP2 out soon, maybe not a PSP with a HDD. But more future like one, also you can buy a 4GB HDD for the PSP.

5. Drag and drop?Yes. (No proprietary software to deal with?)You'll need PSP video express (free) to convert your video to MP4 and then you just transfer them but you don't have to buy anything.

Con
1. No built-in storage There is a 4gb HDD as TAFF said.
2. Bulky (doesn't fit in pocket especially since a case is inevitible)
It fits in my pocket with my carry case (it's soft and it protects my psp from scratches)
3. Carrying discs around would drive me nuts. Not to mention scratched? (never seen them) Maybe they sell little individual cases, but I'm not sure and this is a UMD
4. Pay each disk and for Mem card. Yes, unless your digital camera is a sandisk then the mem card of your cam will fit in your PSP.
This should answer some of your questions.

Someone might of said this, but the main reason for me that might be the reason behind my boredem, is that its gonna take some time to get my libary to match my ps2 libary. Plus to be able to use it for all its possiblities takes money. So over time, it will be useful.

Found out today that the my school runs on a wireless connection....So I was surfing gtp during math today....
