I enjoy a good bottle of wine, usually after a day of work or with a good meal. While searching around I found a wine store near me, and ventured in the other day.

I picked out a few good bottles in the range of $10-$20 each. On my way out, I picked up the wine list that they had available.

I almost dropped the bottles I was carrying. Much like a Maclaren, we've all heard of it, but never seen one in real life. IF cash was no object, would you pay this much for a bottle of wine? What would it take for you to decide to pay this much?

Remember, that is per bottle. Some people purchase it by the case.

:jawdrop: that's just CRAZY
No i wouiln't buy a bottle of wine that expensive, because it's just wine, I can't taste the difference anyway.

It would take me having a net income in excess of a million $USD a year.

I'll pay $10 - $30 at the moment. However, even if I had unlimited funds, I would struggle to pay those prices.

That said, I have sampled products from all three of those vintners, and they're all about as good as wine gets. My particular favourite is the Chateau Latour. Heavenly.

Wait...Don't forget Mad Dog 20/20 or Boone's.

But seriously, if Giles recommends wines similar I'll have to give it a try. Preferably the little brother, as I can't afford $100+ for a bottle.

Go back and read the posts before today. Sheesh!

I think I might need to make a bit more than 1 million bucks a year to consider buying $1500 bottles of wine. After the first bottle, I'm sure everything tastes the same.

But then again, I'm only 17 and can't say I've tasted more than a sip or two of wine.

You can't legally say that, but we both know that you have.

Heh heh! Don't forget, you Americans are probably getting absolutely stiffed for that sort of wine. The best way to buy French wine is to buy it young, and lay it down. Good reds, such as those, plus ones like Nuits Saint Georges from Burgundy appreciate in value as they mature in the bottle and come closer and closer to drinking readiness. Fundamentally therefore you're only paying for storage space and the self-restraint of the previous owner!

Bordeaux is not my area of specialty - I know a lot more about the Burgundies. However, if you're up for a laugh, buy a 2002 Latour (would cost about £20 in the UK, so make that $33, and add a little for Americanisation, so say $50). Keep it for 10 (yes, ten) years, or 15 if you can bear it, then try it. Of course, by then it will be worth $800 - $1000!

Of the Burgundies, Nuits-Saint-Georges is awesome, as is Volnay. You should also find them more affordable as Burgundy is (how shall I say...) less precious about its wines. In the whites, if you can get hold of Louis Latour's Macon Lugny, you'll struggle to better it. And at £7 per bottle, it's a lot cheaper (and in my opinion better) than Chablis 1er Cru at twice the price.

Oh, and while I'm on recommendations, try Rosemount Shiraz, a lovely little Australian. And Brown Brothers Shiraz also, which is very tasty. And the latest discovery (this weekend) a seriously chilled Brown Brothers Tarrango.

Yeah - if money was no bother, why not?

What would it take for you to decide to pay this much?

Nothing - I'd never pay that much, similar to how I'd never pay more than $100,000 for a car no matter how perfect. Same logic, too: A similar product, though perhaps not exactly as good, can be purchased at a lower price, always.

But you are going to buy me an Enzo, right? Right?!?

As for wine... well, I can't remember ever having tasted wine. Alohol in general just doesn't work with my body well-- too scrawny, I guess.

And my cousin is featured in a Fortune magazine from several years ago, drinking some wine.

Thanks, you're a real pal. I'll let you swoon in it for a few minutes, just because I'm a nice guy.

Where would one go about finding an Enzo? I assume they're all sold off.

You might want to check out some of the Taylors, too, Giles - their 2000 Shiraz is pretty handy.

We're pretty spoilt here - there's a lot of very good wine available here for between $12-$25 Australia - which I think works out to about $7-16 US. I'd be hard pressed to shell out more than $35-40 Australian for a bottle of wine, although it can get more expensive in a restaurant.

For a bottle at home with Sat night dinner, we wouldn't spend more than $20 Australian. If I won a BIG lotto payout, I might buy a $1500 bottle of wine for a very special occasion - but I wouldn't be betting on it.

It's like going surfing in the Antarctic - for that sort of trouble, it'd want to be pretty bloody good!

The most I have ever paied for a bottle of wine was 20 USD,but I did bye a bottle of Don for 150 USD for my prom night, I also bought a 70 USD bottle of scotch(Jonney Walker Gold) Just to try it, and I'm glad I did besides Nepoleon Brandy that is my fav type of liquor.

Here in Spain we have lots of types of wine.
I don't drink wine, but here a bottle (0.75 Litre) of good wine costs 6-10 € or more (1.15$ -> 1€). I think it's a normal price because Spain makes a great amount of litre of wine.

Jeez, and there's absolutely no proof that those $1000-per-bottle wines taste like anything other than coloer vinegar. Better hope you're dealing with experts.

Honestly, I buy the occassional bottle of wine, but I feel it should cost between $7-$15. I'm no expert, so anything more is overpriced, in my opinion. The only other thing I'll turn my nose up at is wine with a screw-cap on it.

You might want to revisit that - quite a few decent whites are coming out with screw caps now. No point putting a cork in something that's not supposed to age.

How the **** did your school let you graduate if you can't even spell buy correctly?

Anywho, back on topic:

If, and this is a realistic if, IF I was 21 or older, the most I'd be willing to spend on a bottle of wine would be $30-$99US. But if I landed a nice job, I could see myself spending $150 or more for a special occasion like a 10th Wedding Aniversary. But otherwise, $30-$99 is probably my price category.

Giles, thanks for the tips on the wine collecting! I'll have to remember that once I get through college(Which will be 6+ years, depending on whether or not I become a foreign exchange student between college and highschool, and depending on what I major in)
