Bought a new HDTV 12/9/05. It is amazing!!!(If you dont have it you ARE missing out)

Also (correct me if I am wrong) the tube syle HDTVs still have the highest quality which is my main concern.
I would have to agree, I've always thought tube tv's look better. Tube TV's for life! (or as long as they continue to sell them). Congrats on your new sony though, my dad has a Sony Trinitron widescreen flatscreen and we just got a few HD channels and its awesome. I dont have the expensive game cables so Ive never seen the wonders of 480p or 1080i or whatever its called.

I lucked out a few years back and Best Buy had a cheap 20" flat screen for sale, it was easily one of the best pictures out of all the other similar sized tv's and it had an S-video input so I just had to buy it, It was only $150 and been one of my best bargain electronics purchases. Its a Daewoo. Im still convinced it looks better than my dads newer 20" flat screen Panasonic in his bedroom.

Bro spend $30-$50 and buy the cable. Plug in GT4 even if you have to rent the game and set everything to 1080i. It is mind blowing. Put it this way. You know on the grand canyon and other tracks where the backround is a little faded??? Well in 1080i EVERYTHING is crystal clear on almost every track. I simply cant emphasise how incredible it is. I am actually totally hooked on GT4 again because now I see how the game was meant to be played. I have a whole new outlook and respect for this game. You could even get the cable for xbox. You should see Far cry with the new cables and the HDTV. OMG every xbox game looks awesome! 👍

I don't think that TV is actually HD.

It is. And it isn't.

Only a set that is widescreen and has a built in digital tuner can be called a "HDTV" set.

But, what his set is, though, is a "HDTV-ready" set. It will display a high-def program in actual high-def. But, either a seperate digital tuner is needed, or another source of h-d is needed, like a PS3 with a BD movie.

For HDTV owners... is running GT4 in HD that impressive? I've yet to experience it, but I went from regular AV cables to component cables last year and was stunned by the improvement... will I be blown away when I get an HDTV? I've seen the difference from regular TV to HDTV but can't imagine how it'll be like on GT4... thanks...

Did you read the thread at all??? Anyway read post 29 and 32. If you arent convinced GT4 in HD is amazing then nothing will convince you. Yes its like an entire new game experience once set up corrctly to 1080i. All of the backround that is blurry on a regular tv, is crystal clear in HD. Grand Canyon is clear as far as you can see in the game.

If your tv is already running the component cables, and is already capable of running in 1080i, then the difference you would see on an HD ready tv would be negligable. The game will not be playing in HD, its still just 1080i. The amazing results CB is seeing is not really a result of the TV being HD, its the result of upgrading his cables and to a kick ass TV capable of displaying 1080i. Wow how many times can I say HD and 1080i in one post?

Of course, I could be completely wrong but if games could be displayed in HD don't you think they would be advertising them like that? Im pretty sure 1080i != HD

I cant wait until the PS3 comes out so I can actually play movies in HD. Well once they start making HD movies. :dopey: Until then I will not buy a HD converter DVD player. So far the best thing I have seen (as I mentioned several times) was GT4. I honestly have never seen graphics that good anwhere in my life on any tv. Even xbox games in 480p are soo incredible now. Even my girlfriends brand new 20" tv doesnt come close and hers looks really really good.

thanks guys... my bad, I did read the other posts, but I guess I got a little anxious on wanting to hear more about the HD-GT4, as I'm planning to get an HDTV...

This is my current Setup:

The TV is a Samsung LE-40M61B.

I am currently waiting for my DVDO iScan VP30 video processor. The TV´s internal deinterlacer really sucks. It is probably the worst I have ever seen. If you are going to buy an LCD or a plasma TV, plan for an additional video processor with at least a Silicon Image 504 or a Faroudja 2200 (better 2300) deinterlacer chip.

Yes it has been proven that if you want the ultimate graphics you need a tube style tv. I am going to buy a HD converter DVD player soon so I can view movies in HDMI on my HDTV. :D
So far GT4 in 1080i is still the best thing I have seen on my new hdtv. Once I play the xbox360 or PS2 I am sure I will be blown away.

Here in Europe (in my case Germany) there is not a single CRT available that has the necessary bandwith to display 720p or 1080i. There are some TV-CTRs that can display 1080i, but they have only 540 lines. This is pretty useless, because even for 1080i you need a device with a resolution of 1920x1080 - although 540 lines of each field are scanlines (click this picture).

I couldn't take it anymore. I had to do something.

I bought a new high-def component video switcher because I couldn't take playing with my PS2 with standard (composite) connections for another second. Even though I'm getting a new HDTV set soon, I had to buy it. GT4, and other games, look so terrible with composite connections, especially after spending four years with component. I just couldn't take it anymore. That's how horrible composite is.

Holy sh#$ I just rented the xbox360 and watched movies in HDTV. OMG what a huge difference. I can physically see the pores on actors faces now and so many other details that just were impossible to see before. I will be playing the xbox360 in a few minutes to see how the graphics are on the new hdtv. The xbox360 makes my regular DVD player look like garbage on the HDTV.

The XBox360 has a regular DVD player. Plus, there are no HD-DVDs available. The best video quality you can expect from the 360 is 480p, or upscaled 1080i.

No doubt the video quality is better, though. But, it ain't HDTV.

It still plays the same as an upconverted DVD player. I believe thats what they are calling them. Instead of buying one of those for $100 I will just get a PS3 or XBOX360.

we're looking to get the Pioneer pdp-436hdg plasma... it has a resolution of 1024x768 and states that its HD-ready, does anyone know if the resolution be enough to handle GT4's 1080i signal?

Plasma hdtv's will not have as good of a picture as the heavy tube style tv's. It will still be great but not as good as other tube tvs.

I know CRTs are ultimately better, but was wondering whether 1024x768 would be able to handle an hd 1080i signal...

What switch did you get?

Nice, I just ordered a Audio Authority 1154A. We'll see how it goes. :)

It sucks to running out of inputs. I still had 3 component inputs left on the TV itself, but I'd rather leave the switching at the A/V Receiver. Supposedly the 1154A is auto switching by detecting if there's a signal present. If multiple signals are present then it's a hierarchy order of 1-4 as to which input is active. There is also a manual override if things get too weird.

I have also been wanting a switch since I have the xbox, xbox360(rental), ps2 and dvd player all in component cables. So it is a pain in the butt to keep plugging the cables in and out when I want to play different systems. Did it reduce the quality at all???

I didn't get mine yet, but the people who have it say no. It's active, not passive, plus it has a very wide frequency range. People with them can't see any detail difference. But, I'll make a full report on Friday when it most-likely arrives.

If you get a switcher, make sure it has TOSLINK and HDMI inputs/outputs since you have those inputs on your TV.

I thought I read somewhere that HDTV uses 27mhz of bandwidth. Most active switches are 50-100mhz which is more than enough bandwidth to carry the signal to your TV. I wonder what bandwidth limitations there are on the cables...?

Hmmm... I'm not really sure. I hope I have no problems.
