The point was that the indicator starts blinking relatively early. How much early, that's of course depending on the user's driving style as you mention, but with consistent driving it tends to also blink consistently early from what I've seen (further reinforcing the mental "blinking light->wait a little->brake!" association). Anyway, from now on, I'll try to not use it anymore.

Yes in most cases it is on WELL early causing that let off throttle and wait for it syndrom and I have also found in other cases it may very well be late....then there is the "Suggested gear" part of it that makes you doubt yourself, I find it tends to be like this, yeah it suggests say 2nd gear but really it's a 3rd gear turn with rpm left to exit the corner where otherwise if you actually used 2nd gear you would make it 3/4 of the way around the corner and then need a shift.

Overall it's pretty rad. Love this update.

The immersion into the track has increased without the suggested braking and gear indicator. Too bad that option can't be selected from the online room settings.

Finally a good way to do endurance races without turning your HUD on/off every 10 laps to check your fuel.

I absolutely love this update.

What helps (many?) people so much isn't the "suggested gear" function of that indicator (I think most people shift by ear to some extent), but rather that it blinks just before the optimal braking points. It's like having somebody who shouts you to brake each time. You can't help but notice it if you aren't deeply immersed in your driving. As a result, even if you don't want to, your brain trains to wait for the indicator to blink before starting to brake.

Personally I never wanted to get completely rid of the HUD, so this new option to remove portions of it has been the first chance for me to try driving without the suggested gear indicator.
👍
Having it turned off has just extended the learning of the game even more.
I find braking after a long straight is where I go wrong now - Sarthe, Monza, turn 1 @Fuji. Tight twisty tracks aren't too bad now.:dopey:

I agree that since judging speeds is not always easy, the higher the speed from one is supposed to brake, the more margin for error there is. High speed braking is one of my shortcomings as well - I tend to brake too early because I'm conservative and somewhat the fear of crashing (I set up my practice sessions with full damage enabled) kicks in, something that didn't happed with the indicator enabled.

If this was a driving assist and was forced disabled in online races, I think most people would crash even more hopelessely than without the ABS as they drive with the "arcade game" mindset.

By the way, I've also realized that without the blinking braking indicator it's also harder to drive different car classes with different tires in a short amount of time without making a few practice laps at a slower pace first.

Has anybody else tried disabling this indicator and checking if this affected their driving?

Haven't tried it yet, but I know it will affect my driving. It's basically a big red flashing sign telling you you should brake soon. Especially on a track you have never driven before it qualifies as an aid. I welcome the fact that you can turn it off now.

I am so glad that the suggested gear can be disabled! I find it more of a distraction and wrong than anything else. I usually brake on the track markers and when the suggested gear would come up I sometimes would find myself shifting to that gear even though I could do the corner 1 gear up faster... (It says "3" but in reality thats slower than "4")

The aid is not having it now! lol... Im not a fan of distractions as I play, as soon as I started playing I got rid of everything but Speedo and Tach! I dont care whos car is in what position, I care where I am... Oh, I do leave the map up so I can see the other cars around me but its on scale 2 so it doesnt aid in upcoming corners either

Where do you usually brake on open road-themed Course Maker tracks such as Toscana or Mt.Aso?

To those who think it has no effect on their driving, I suggest to disable it for a while. You might be surprised on how it helped you judge braking distances/points. In my case I almost have to re-learn every track, even though I wasn't actively looking at the indicator.

I would call it a driving aid. It has that much effect.

They had this option in GT4 to remove excess HUD modules\features, i couldnt believe it took 1 year to get this option in GT5, but im also happy cuz that light is annoying as hell when you're trying not to look at it and it just BLINKS RED like some rogue alarm clock.

Sorry for the late reply. I agree it's quite visible. I never noticed that options in GT4 however. Maybe it was only in NA/EU versions? I had the JPN version and it lacked the A-B spec driver swap option during pitstops, to mention a difference I'm sure there was.

I haven't noticed any difference since turning it off. The indicator is so badly off the mark anyway that it's more of a "you should brake now, or perhaps two seconds later, or perhaps you should have already" gadget. All it really does is inform you of a corner coming up and you probably knew that anyway.
I wish you could disable suggested gear indicator for all cars in a lobby.
Wouldn't affect anything - those heavily relying on it are in the back of the pack already and the fast guys never paid attention to it to begin with.

Haha:tup: Totally agree
