Hey

for my final year project im doing brands hatch and part of our work we need to do audience testing, so i thought ild show a few models that i have so far and get some feedback, on what you like/dont like what youd change or do different, ild like you to give useful advice not just say its bad

one model im quite happy with is the bridge over the track, all using textures from pictures i took at the track.

the Podium, im fairly happy with but feel the back is a bit too shiny so this will need to be fixed

a fire extinguisher, not quite finished but getting there
Fire_Wheel9.jpg

Then some larger models that still need some work
This is the main pit building, im not quite happy with the metal yet but its getting there
texture23.jpg

and finally the main track, ive just used red here so i don't lose the outline of the track while working
Track15.jpg

there are a few other small models but theres alot i want to change about them so not showing them yet, thank you in advance for any feed back.

this will be shown in about a minute long video in a video game advert style with slow pans around details of the track and cars racing around

Cool! Don't overkill on the small details though (like the fire extinguisher) unless you're planning to show them up close ;)

Hi, excellent work mate! It looks brilliant, since you are asking for feedback the only thing I notice (which seems normal with 3d modelling) is that for instance the frame of the bridge looks a bit "plasticky", is that due to a lack of texture? I notice the same with the fire extinguisher's wheels. Other than that it looks awesome.

Thanks! yeah, that's how I started, I was going through the pits and modeling everything, I realised this was progressing very slow, so now ive stopped that and started going on big elements, like now I'm going for the basics of the track, and getting all the fences set up there, then I decided to do two areas in more detail, this will be around the pits and around the bridge as these are areas ive already made elements for :p

I see what you mean about the bridge, I think maybe it needs to be abit more rough, maybe add some rust to it so its more noticeable that its metal, and the fire extinguishers wheels have no textures at all yet, needs to be black, but thank you :p

How steep have you got Paddock Hill? It is always a lot steeper than you'd expect, and games never do it justice.

I tried to make it as realistic as possible, I found a website that showed the elevation of each corner of the track, but I know what you mean, driven it a few times and it is steep! :P

crashbarrierrace4.jpg

made a start on the crash barrier around the track (and yes ive fixed that bad face causing a shadow bottom left, didn't notice it until rendered :p)

The model itself looks great but something about that bridge and podium makes them look like a miniature, for a model railway or something. I don't know, the lighting or the texture. Maybe it won't look like that added to the full model though.

I know what u mean samus, I think it needs to be made a be dirtier, there quite clean at the moment

They all of these are going have one LOD or multiple LODs?
assume Level Of Detail?

well I'm having two high detail areas, the main straight/pit area and druids, the rest will be shown but at speed from / around a car, this is more to keep down render times then anything else as putting it together wouldn't change time there too much as most of the other areas are just crash barriers really :p

this is how Druids is so far, and yes I know the road is very low res, that needs to be sorted :P

I think what's missing is basically just sunlight. Right now the shadows are very diffuse, but if you add a sun light (which will give you sharper shadows) I think it will look more realistic.

that's true, at the moment I'm just trying to finish with what I have, plan cameras a bit and fix anything that doesn't look right that's in the camera view after that, will save fixing stuff that will never be seen for this video, plus there will be lighting then :P

What are you modelling/rendering in?
I'm using Maya 2016 to model and rendering in Mental Ray

Any plans on doing the GP version after you finish the indy?
Possibly, right now I'm just doing the indy and a video with hopefully a couple of cars for uni, but I might slowly expand on it after, but progress will be a lot slower and it will just be for me rather than an assignment

Nice effort! I use 3DS and mental ray at work, but wouldn't know where to start to model Brands Hatch like that!
thanks, wasn't too bad, just traced a line from google earth :P

so hard finding a job ;) haha slowly applying for graduate jobs :p

and I used 3DS in my first year but for some reason after that uni changed to maya

What kind of work are you looking for? I'm in yachts...

any really, things like 3d work web editing or just stuff in film and tv I apply for the most but most things that I'm able to I apply for just because I know job seekers wont be enough to keep my car on the road :P

Well good luck on the job hunt! If you get really stuck I know of a company that specializes in Autodesk that could get you a pretty decent job pretty quickly, so just shout!

thanks! may do that closer to the time, like at the moment not 100% sure on my graduation date, so only really able to apply for graduate jobs that start summer time when I know ill be free, but yeah if I'm still looking when I know when everything in uni will be over by and when I'm near completing ill message :P

Damn. That's pretty good. What course are you doing and what uni are you at?

I'm in multimedia technology and design, a bit like Digital Arts but has some programming in it :P
and I'm at the University Of Kent

finished most of the track layout and adjusted a few textures, I know some are low res but mainly just making sure the UV maps work, now to finish the pit building, plan for this to be done by Friday. if it is I should easily finish the rest of the track in them :P

I did plan 2 cars but I have back up plans of 1 car (different colours) or worst case, just "on board/bumper cam"

Pits nearly finished, hopefully upload some renders later :p just trying to get the fence along the pit wall right then clean up some textures

EDIT

quick render down pits as if standing on wall

Ahh, this brings back memories of my track day testing out a 911 Turbo. Had lunch at the table on the far left of this picture! Lol. Nice effort on this!

haha I'm here and Silverstone a lot :P
done driving experience in a Vantage, f360 and Gallardo, and track days in my own car :P mark 4 and 5 golfs :P

thanks :P

If/When it comes to the point where you're modelling the Marshals posts, tag me in the post and I'll give you some pointers. I've been posted on a few of the corners, so I can be of good help there.
