so the other day i was sitting there and for some reason that movie the core poped into my head. it was a crappy movie but had a good concept. i was wondering what would happen if the world really did stop spinning on its axis. would anythign happen? or would it just be constant light and constant darkness on one side of the earth.
 
The earth would fall apart into many pieces due to the lack of gravity probably.
 
We would all die a horrible horrible death, except all on GTP who floated to the moon and lived happily ever after with anything they wanted.
 
That would be astronomically unlikely. If that did happen, day would last for 6 months and night would last for 6 months. Kinda like the July and December solstices and the effect it has on the North and South poles.

Well, if it stopped rotating on its axis, but not around the sun, I think the most basic way to explain is that whole six-month day-and-night thing, with like a one.five-month evening and morning.

Or the dark side (ha...) might get too cold and all life would be erradicated. I guess the only way to know for sure is to stop the Earth.

If the earth stopped rotating, for one, there would be no 24 hours.
Two, we would be eaten up alive by the rays from the sun, because frmo what I remember, the Earth needs to continously rotate in order for the ozone layer to do it's work.
 
If people in Alaska can live without daylight for months, then so can we!

i think everybody not on gtplanet would float right off the earth and into hell somewhere while gtp stayed perfectly the same:p
 
Everyone in the world could start running and driving their cars in the same direction, and get the earth rotating again.

Uhm. We would have no atmosphere. We would all die through sudden decompression. It wouldnt be pretty. It would be quite messy.
 
Why wouldn't we have an atmosphere? We would always have an atmosphere, it just may not consist of the gases that we need to live like oxygen. Venus rotates so slow that its day is longer than its year and it still has an atmosphere after 14 billion years.
 
Yeah...but its rotating, so it still has an atmostphere. If we werent rotating, we wouldnt have an atmosphere.
 
1: The mOVie was awesome, so I don't know what you're talking about.
2: The movie is entirely accurate as of what would happen if the core of the earth did stop spinning. We'd lose our polar north and south, certain radiation from the sun would break through and fry the planet, there would be various auroras over the entire planet, and there would conceivably be violent lightning storms around the planet (couldn't destroy the colisseum, but still they'd be violent...)
 
The movie hypothesized what if the core stopped spinning. This thread is about the earth stopping spinning.

Me and my friends, thought like what if we all run east in a north-south line would the day last longer, then we realised we were all really drunk.

It rotates slower than it revolves around the Sun, making rotation useless.
 
Rotation is useless? It is the basis for all of our weather systems, temperatures, tides, and days....I wouldnt call that useless....
 
I was talking about Venus. Besides, Revolution is the basis on our seaons.

:odd: The core is the center of the earth. If the core stops, the earth stops, and visa versa.
 
Well, the core could stop and the earth could continue spinning. The core is part liquid and some solid. It is not directly connected to the crust by wires and concrete.

Anyway, if the earth stopped spinning, the tides would definitely stop and the sun would definitely scorch the surface of the earth. But now let's think about the question a little more. If the earth stopped rotating compared to what? If it's relative to it's orbit, there would eventually be no change of night and day where Africa or something would continue "forward" on the orbit and have only partial sun. If it was relative to the axis of rotation of the sun or something, then the earth would get the six month day, six month night thing, although a little more complicated than described maybe.
 
Tides would not stop as long as the moon revolved around the Earth. It would get the six-month day and night thing because all we would have is the Vernal Equinox, July Solstice, Autumnal Equinox, and the December Solstice.
 
If the world stop rotating, I wouldn't I mean hell we are all going to die from nuking each other in WW4 in another 10 or so years. So I say screw it and besides I think if it did happen, I know a lot of GTP'ers who would be having some big A partys.:p
 
What ever happened to WWIII? Don't expect any more World Wars. I think the U.S. has proved that they are the dominant country and they'll do anything to maintain peace. The only thing that might cause another World War is terrorism. They say all terrorism will be over in 2012.
