I saw a forum that said, "bump", and it was by the OP. The. Someone said you can't bump your own post.

What is bumping?

Bumping is the act of making an unnecessary post so that your thread moves to the top of the page.
It's considered spam.
If you see two bumps in a row, report it.

Actually, any bumping is frowned-upon.

Yes, but I personally don't report it unless it's two posts in a row that are deliberately bumping the thread by the same person.
That's just my personal policy.
I must admit, if it weren't for bumps, there are some race series' that never would have happened.

And if a thread dies off and you want to try to revive it, then bumps should also be acceptable.

That's just my two cents.

The Marketplace would be nothing but threads started by those who could post a bump every hour or so, though. Certainly you see the problem there.

We don't mind "stealth bumps", in moderation, when people are letting others know that new info is added, as an example. But when nothing has been done, and there's nothing added past "bump" or "any more offers?", it's pretty much spam.

That just creates problems. Like in the Marketplace, when people only want to call attention to their threads and stop them falling off the first page of the subforum. If bumping was permitted, that subforum in particular would just degenerate into a race to see who could keep their threads at the top of the queue for the longest.

If a thread dies and you cant to revive it, then double-posting is fine - so long as you are actually contributing something to the discussion. If you're just calling attention to a thread for the sake of calling attention to it, that's a bump.

OK, ok, not looking to get into am argument.
I understand the case with the marketplace, but one bump should be allowed.
Say, I post now, when the brits are all asleep, then bump sometime midday when they're all awake again.

I understand that bumping isn't allowed, but I think that ONE bump should be OK.

I better stop now before I start confusing myself or get myself banned haha.

Again, just my two cents.
I get that all bumping is frowned upon, but when I read through the forums, I'm OK with one bump, but if the entire thread is bumps, then it should be reported/locked as there's no useful information whatsoever in said thread.

We've had threads on bumping before but I will point you to these posts in particular.

Bumping and double-posting are actually covered in the Frequently Asked Questions I put together earlier this week. Take a look at the Guidelines and Best Practices section for more.

I have an example here:

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=208256

So this guy opens a thread for wheel advice, and on post #5 he asks a question about pre-made handbrakes for the G27 which no one answers. Ten days later, he posts again asking if anyone has any input regarding his question.

I think this is acceptable as the guy is clearly not spamming not gaining anything by bumping it (like the marketplace). He also waited a reasonable amount of time, considering that if no one has replied to the thread in 10 days it is likely they won't in he future. Also this results better as no new topic will be opened.

Thoughts?

This is what I was talking about...
That should be acceptable.

That's not something I would report.
But if it was three posts in a row within an hour, then I would report it.

Thoughts?
While it would be nice if the bump post had a bit more substance than simply "Anyone can help?" none of the staff would hand out a warning for that. It's been days, not hours (or in some cases minutes!) between posts. It's fine in my book. 👍

That's fine.

I would be embarrassed to post on a thread just saying "bump".
But maybe because I've been on forums on the internet so long where any type of bumping was strictly prohibited, and a post simply saying "bump" could get someone muffled for a week. lol

Anyway, I don't participate a lot in the marketplace section... but I can see how potentially awful bumping can be there.

In the online section, if it weren't for some unobtrusive bumping, I might've missed some race series I really enjoy.

For myself, my own race series thread is fairly active enough given the participation level, that bumping for the sake of bumping is hardly necessary.
However, if the thread is to be bumped... I only do it with NEW CONTENT. Something.
Even if it's just some relevant related photomodes from practices, that at least somebody may enjoy glancing at... so that interested parties don't click only to find there's nothing new to see since their last visit to the thread.

I have overtly posted "BUMP!" in my race event thread a few times, mainly just to remind people that it's on & if there are any rules changes or updates etc.

@ Jordan, is this ok, or should I refrain from doing it?

That's OK, because (as I've mentioned in the guidelines linked above), informational or relevant bumps are generally acceptable.

The post itself is certainly fine but the word "bump" at the beginning isn't necessary.

I wasn't too sure is all. On the last GT forum I was a member of, overt bumping was ok, but I will stop writing "BUMP" from now on & make sure that the post does have relevant & important information to add.

Thanks!
