I am interested in making backups of my PS2 games and was wandering how can I do it with a CDR drive. What programs, etc can I use. Also I know how to play backups on a non- modchipped PS2! Just ask how! ;)

I have one, a modchip by the way. :D

Well, to play CD-R backups of your games so as not to wear out your original game, you would need to have a mod chip as you stated you did.

Next you have to determine which type of Disc it is you wish to backup. There are DVD-Roms, as well as Compact Disk type of games. The Compact disk versions can be duplicated just like anyother CD-Rom disk, using your CD-R drive. DVD-Roms are a little more difficult, as you have to rips the disk first, and delete all the unnessary content that takes up too much space for the game to fit on a standard CD-R. Most movie files have to be deleted and replaced with smaller, clone movies. Some audio, music and even additional game modes have to be deleted as well. Finally, you would have to use a HEX editor and find the "Disk Detection" string and change the setting from 2 to 1 so the PS2 no longer looks for the disk during loadups. Once this is done, you can now burn the game files to a standard CD-R. I'm not certian, but I believe that this level of editing of the software, even though it is your own PS2 game, purchased by you, is not allowed through copyright laws.

WOW! Thnks! I tryed a games while I burnt it just like any other CD, but I had not enough room on my CD. Also an erroe came up once, I forgot what it said though.

what about CD-Rw's? how do you burn games with those?
i am getting my dell in early november and it will have a CD-Rw and i want to learn how to copy dvd's too.

Back ups my ass.....don't steal games!!!!!!!
I apologise if you really are just doing backups but c'mon, the games don't 'wear out'. If you have to you can have them re surfaced too. This is just what you are supposed to say for legal reasons...only reason I'm pissed is that I want to get into the industry and I don't want people just taking my games.....

This brings up another discussion... Should music be distributed via digital transfering between a peer to peer network? Remember those old bootlegs, or how about recording a song off of the radio. If the industry/artist puts there music "out there" it's gonna get distributed. Most artists are humbled at the fact that their music is so popular, while the major lable CEO is getting upset that he isn't getting his cut.

Perhaps I'll start a new thread on this topic?

Oh and, welcome MXTHREE to :gtplanet: ;)

Thanks for the welcome and sorry for the Dell comments....I want a Mac, call me crazy but they kick butt for graphic design stuff that I do.

(off topic)
Well, actually they don't suck. OK, well maybe to you they suck, but MAC's have access to hardcore audio, video, and graphical apps and hardware that the PC can only attempt at accessing. I do have to agree that the abundance of apps available for the PC market is huge and very accessable, whereas the Mac market is more specialized for it's specific purposes.

I will say that PC's in that last couple of years are getting closer in achieving the stability and hardware effeciencies that MAC has had for some time now. It won't be long before PC's will even over-run those specialized markets that holds the MAC's in such high esteem. For the most part it comes down to cost. If I could afford a MAC, I would definately have one in my recording studio. On the other had, I would also have a PC for all my entertainment needs.

The only reason why about 75% of the people here don't own a Mac is because the cost is to high. Myself included. Sad to say, it is definitely a superior product in so many ways.

I like Macs, just not the ones the schools buy because they always get the lowest quality ones. I ended up putting RedHat7.3 on my computer(200mhz P1 w/MMX), it was great for what I needed it to do, with the exception that it couldn't do anything I wanted it to do because I simply didn't have the hardware. Had my father given me permission to install RH or any other major Linux distribution, on our decent computer(1.7ghz P4), I'm sure Linux would've run perfectly. I also had problems getting my network to work for my linux OS, never got it to work under it, but it works under ME, so that's what I'm going to end up using until it dies.

So, to bring this back into the topic, the Mac OS's are based off of the Linux kernel now, so if you really want to have the stability and everything(Even on my 200mhz computer, Linux NEVER crashed on it!), you could try Linux. Make sure you get a window manager though(like KDE or Gnome,) or else it'll not be as great as you want.

If you want an office suite that works well compared to Microsoft's, then you could try FreeOffice(I think, not sure.) It's basically OpenOffice5.0, but free. OpenOffice use to be free, but now they charge something like $70?... Anyway, it's a lot cheaper than getting Microsoft's office, and I think they give you a powerpoint program too, which would be the equivelent of a Professional package for Microsoft with all the types of programs included? Just some food for thought

*Please note that if you attempt to install Linux on any PC and something does not work out by a freak chance, I am not liable, and that you underwent your operations under your own free will and accept all responcibility.

Oh, how can you backup's on non-modded PS2's? Do you have to use a GameShark? B/c I don't have one, but if it only requires a boot disk, how can you boot burnt CD games? I have Madden 2002, but the thing keeps on getting scratched, and I don't know how many more times the Disk Doctor can work on it...:(

Are you reffering to the KNIFE TRICK or summit of that nature i don't trust that idea .i will stick with the mod chip

On the Mac, PC thingy

The Mac is a Tool for Industry profesionals that's why you see them predominantly in recording studio's, Graphic design studio's etc etc they can't be beaten

The PC is a toy for surfing the net and playing games that is just my opinion. that's why most PC owners say macs suck because they can't play most games and stuff like that
But seriously who is gonna play games while working..
Putting games aside in the office the mac can do everything a PC can so they can't be crap

I dont mean to brag but i do happen to own a Mac G4 dual GIG with all the trim
I also own a PC the specification is slightly better on the PC running a 2 GIG athalon XP processor G force 4 the works really i use this for mucking about on games ,downloads and stuff like that ..
The mac i use for more serious stuff

But if i was to choose between them i would definatly take the G4

i noticed you guys were talking about dells earlier they are very crapy computers i have one and it blows big time i mean like i couldnt give it away and its brand new lol.

Ditto... I don't think it's too wise to take off the face of the CD Rom drive and stick something into the PS2 while it's running...

Totaly taking the face off will just expose the unit to excessive dust build up that in the end will bust your machine if the KNIFE TRICK dos'nt do it first
