Burnout Revenge: PS2 and Xbox
Version I Played: PS2
Website: www.eagames.co.uk/burnout
So the successful Burnout series is back for a 4th round, but can it beat the might of Burnout 3: Takedown?
The 4th installmant has taken an even darker, grungier twist from B3 with its main motive being Revenge, this is the first time the "crashbraker" has been taken from the crash mode and put into races making you able to deliever stone cold revenge on the car that took you out.
The graphics are as shaper as you would expect and the crashes have been built on from B3 with even more pieces of metal flying off, the racing is much more closely contested and the AI actually looks to take you out this time, thus keeping you on your wits end. Although there are less tracks there are more variations of the one 'area' which more than makes up for the lower number. They vary from tight back streets of Italy to the freeways of USA, and a number of mixed.
Crash mode has been totally revised with a new mini game as such right at the beginning to determine the speed you take off at, get it all wrong and you can either stall of blow up your engine, a nice addition I think. Also since there is a ramp in around 70% of all crash junctions there is wind effects to try and throw you off your course, you have to use aftertouch to: A) Counter the wind and B) To direct your car into the unsuspecting traffic. It makes crash mode a whole different ball game.
Races have been given a update, aswell as the crashbrakers there is now "Traffic Checking" where you can drive into traffic that is going in the direction you are, you can;t do it to oncoming traffic or large vehichles such as artics or buses, you coem off worse. You can use traffic checking to take out other competitors but it takes a lot of skill and perhaps that little pinch of luck. I think traffic checking makes the game less exciting as now you only have to dodge oncoming traffic, your safe in the normal lane as long as there is no large vehicles in your way.
Crashbraker as also been added to Road Rage and Eliminator events, which kind of defies the objective really of taking out cars whilst looking after yours, you can't underestimate its fun factor though.
The soundtrack on B3 was possibly one of the strongest line ups of the year, this year however is a real dissapointment, unless your into indy and death metal, the stand out songs is most probably either CKY with "As The Tables Turn" or Billy Talent with "Red Flag". You might aswell however just listen to your own music, I mean, who likes Bloc Party?.
Multiplayer has not been touched at all.
So in conclusion, its has been updated from B3 in some areas, but all good things comes at a price and some areas have been made easier or poorer, and im not sure if the good parts cover them.
Rating: 9/10
Its good, very good infact and alot of fun with pals BUT stick with B3, its a better all round package, B:R is good in areas, but also a drag in others. Maybe if they spent a little more time then it could have beaten its older bro.
