Buy now, or in 2010?

So, for about 6 months now I've been dying to buy a NEW(factory new) ride. First it was the new Tundra  but now, I want this

The problem is, in the End of May I embark on another military deployment. It just seems silly to buy a brand new ride and then leave it for a year while i'm paying payments AND full insurance, and it will probably get driven once a week at best if I leave with my father. So the deployement is the biggest argument not to get one.

However, I'm worried about the state of the car market when I return(wich right now is planned for mid 2010). If the bailouts are successful, the dealers wont be so generous with their prices. However, I read and hear that this economic downturn isn't going to heal anytime soon. So maybe it will be and even better time to buy in '10??

3rd, will Pontiac be around to sell me a super sexy G8 GT (or GXP) in mid 2010? I trust GM will honor warranties to people who have warranty time left on pontiacs if that brand goes under. But maybe not.

So what is the opinions of the vast GTP community? Whom for the most part are much more level headed about things than I.

Now is the time to buy, however any savings you would receive now would simply be destroyed by the insurance and monthly loan payments over the course of the next year. By the time you want to buy, G8s will be offered at significant discounts, and you won't have any trouble getting a deal. If I was you, I'd wait.

Depends. Right now, GM is pushing hard on their "Red Tag" sale (I believe it was extended), so you're probably going to be able to get a G8 for $5-7K off the sticker price. Its hard to know exactly what the market would look like by then, as there are still a kajillion things that could happen between now and then. My guess is that because GM and GMAC received bailout money, I don't think their loan systems will change all that much, so as long as you have good credit, you'll get (give or take) the same deals you would have had before.

Pontiac as a brand, according to what GM is saying right now, will continue to be around for some time. However, the overall size of the brand is due to be cut significantly, but the G8 should remain. We were told to expect a five year run on the G8, so the car won't be gone until 2012 at the earliest. Beyond that, even if Pontiac ceased to exist, because its a GM product, your warranty would be honored at any Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac or GMC dealer.

Overall, I guess you just need to sit down and figure out how much its going to cost you right now to see if you think its worth throwing the cash down. The G8 isn't going anywhere, for now, and they will be adding the GXP model here in the next few weeks, as well as the G8 ST this summer. You should be able to get a Red Tag G8 GT for a decent price right now, I assume, but as Doug pointed out, I don't think I'd want to be paying on a car that I can't drive.

...Plus, if you like, I think the used car market is going to be even more kind to the G8 than it was to the GTO...

I saw what is probably my 6th G8 sighting two nights ago. This is after quite some time on sale. I don't think Pontiac is going to have any less trouble pushing them out the door than they are now.

Order the car exactly how you want it now.

Come home to exactly the G8 you want, or come home to whatever you're driving now and wait for your car to be built/order processed or buy one off the lot.

Buy used. Whether you buy now or later. Smartest thing you can when buying a car other than doing thorough research.

If your dad has garage space you could buy it now and park it there. Less insurance hassle, no need for liability, etc.

I think I've decided to wait. Just makes more sense. And as it's been mentioned, when I get back the used G8 market should be more lucrative. Or maybe they'll have diesle/hybrid Tundra's by then LOL.

*edit* Oh and thanks for all of the advice. /tiphat

I considered posting the same suggestion, but then remembered the paperwork when I got the Civic. You have to sign an agreement that the car will have full coverage insurance throughout the term of the financing.
