Buying a new computer

I'm getting a new computer really soon (Tommorow night, probably) and I need some advices on what I should buy. BTW, This will be a gaming PC.

I want the price to be around 1700$ CAN, which is around $1300-$1400 US.
(I want to get a Hyundai LD90+ (19", 8ms) for the monitor)

So what are your recommendations?

Athlon 64 3800+ or Athlon64 x2 4400+
2gb ddr ram
2x250gb seagate hard drives or better
Nvidia 7800 something or other (I don't know which will fit your budget best). The ATI x1900 cards are also fantastic - choose the one you prefer. Personally, I'd go with Nvidia due to the fact that they draw slightly less power.
The L90D+ was $450 last summer, it should be cheaper now

Overall, that price will get you a very nice setup. If you play with the numbers, you'll be able to fit SLI or Crossfire in with no problems.
 
Are you planning on building a computer or going to the store to buy one? If your buying a game computer make sure you dont get the celeron processor. TRUST ME AND EVERYONE ELSE IT SUCKS!!!
I also dont see any difference with the DVI cord versus the regular cord. I wasted my money on that DVI cord unless there is a settnig I dont know about.
 
My only recommendation would be go for the AMD 64's.... they are the way foreward for gaming and everything else!

I'm probably going to the store to buy one. I probably won't buy a Celeron then :scared:.

And I'll make sure to check for AMD 64's.
 
I don't know what stores you have available, but either the HP or Gateway should work out well. Both have Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core, 2gig ram, etc.

You won't get much of a computer if you get store-bought or pre-built. Try putting one together yourself. It's fun, you'll get exactly what you want and you won't be stuck with prefab machines that you won't be able to upgrade without voiding a warranty

I'd say any branded DDR400 memory for those chips. Faster ram adds cost and the true benefits would only really be seen if he tries to overclock.

Since you are going to just buy one from the store it will be interesting to see what you can get for $1,300-$1,400 including the monitor. That only leaves you around $1,000 for the pc.
I just had mine built for $1,000 and its extremely fast. Mabey not the fastest on this site but I would think it has to be within the top 5. Then after the 1,000 I bought my 19" flatscreen LCD monitor for around $300. Grand total $1,300 home built. I can run every game so far in 1280x960 on the highest settings including FEAR.

So I went to see how much it would cost to have:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2*512MB DDR
250GB HD
NX7600GT
BenQ FP91GS
420W Power supply
Mouse,Keyboard, PC case, etc...

This would cost 1950$CAD, about $1700 US, £1000.

1) Will I be able to run FEAR on highest settings (1024*768, everything else maxed out)?
2) Is this a good price for this PC?

I quickly worked out the price for a identical system (except with a BenQ FP91G+ and a 480W PSU) with a logitech corless mouse and keyboard, an Asus TA-250 case and an Abit AN8-V motherboard.

The price came to £680.94 including VAT.

That's a very similar spec PC as mine. I've got an Athlon64 3500+, 2Gb RAM, 256Mb 7600GT, 16x DVD-RW drive, 450W PSU, 19" LSD, wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse, 2 160Gb IDE HDs, 2 200Gb SATA HDs. It's cobbled together from recent upgrades and parts I already owned. I paid in total about E1100, which works out at about $1350. The hard drives purchased were from work and were very cheap. The LCD monitor was also purchased from work and was scratched so was also much cheaper that usual.

BTW, I don't think you can match DDR2 RAM with an Athlon chip? I don't think that current AMD chips are designed to work with DDR2 RAM. But don't quote me on that.
