I was wondering if anyone has any experience in buying domain names. I'm doing a some work for a friends band and we're both new to the field of actually purchasing one. I need www.travesty. - whatever is open. So far everything is taken but .biz and .cc, but I don't know which one to choose (or neither), and which service to purchase through. If anyone has any experience or knowledge to share, that would be a big help. 👍

Do you know where your going to host this site? Most hosting companies also provide domain name services which tie to your site as well. I get all my domain names for $6.95 for a year. You can also check services such as www.networksolutions.com. They have been around forever, but are more expensive but offer better management for larger scale projects.

.biz or .cc are both alright. Your better off with .com or .org is you can get it.

Or .net too. Try a different name for the site, like "www.thetravesty...", or "www.travesty-theband...", etc.

I think a smaller scale, cheaper site would be better for him, but taking a look at that site, it's actually not too bad.

I'd go with Pako's recommendations. 👍

Having a fast, reliable host is more important than a domain name.

Then you need to ensure that people can type it correctly after they've heard it spoken. Hence why I own gilesguthrie.com as well as my (preferred) giles-guthrie.com.

Since your name is TraVesty, have you thought of a .tv TLD?

I have a good host already, so that's not a problem (should have included that in first post). We've talked about adding words in but overall, we're wanting just plain travesty._ _ _.

Right now we've pretty much decided on ain on travesty.tv for $34.99 through the link Pako posted 👍 .

My next question is, how does this work essentially. I have the domain name, does that simply route to my hosting? I'm just sorta confused on how the domain name (i.e. www.travesty.tv/pictures.html) follows through with indexing on my host.

Your hosting company should have Name Servers (ex. ns1yourhost.com, ns2yourhost.com) or IP addresses for Name Server lookup. Once you have purchased on your domain name, go into their account utility program and edit the name server to the one provided by your hosting company.

In a few days (can take up to 3) everything should up and running under that registered Domain Name.

As far as I'm aware, just setting the name servers won't do it, as the NS is just the IP address of the server that is judged to be "authoritative" for a domain.

The IP address of the WWW record needs to be set to the IP address of your web server. You will also need to ensure that the web server is mapping the inbound request on www.travesty.tv to the correct directory, usually by configuring a virtual directory.

As Pako says though, your web host and domain registrar should give you the help that you need.
