The new Call of Duty game has been announced and will be called Call of Duty: World at War.

I have only read this in a magazine but its a pretty extensive insight including screenshots and lots of info, I will try to break down some key points in to this post.

-The intention of the game is to explore some of the darkest corners of world war 2.
-Namely the battle for the pacific.
-Apparently has a lot in common with survival horror games.
-Enemies attack in sinister ways.
-Lots of gore expected as a cut scene shows a US pow have his throat slashed by a japanese guard with a Katana while the player watches on.
-The destructible enviroments have been given another step forwards.
-A flamethrower which actually has a true to life effect on the enviroment.
-The demo elvel was said to be genuinely frightening, with over 96 channels of audio before the fighting even begins, and enevloping surroundings.
-The tactis used by the enemy imitate real tactics used such as playing dead.
-Flamethrower was demonstrated on a field of Japanese solider playing dead, the guy who saw the demo being played said the screams from the enemies were truly horrible and made more unpleasant by the sight of the enemies skin melting off in the fire.
-Co-op play confirmed.
-A 2nd campaign is revealed at the end of the report, the invasion of Germany by the Soviet Army.
-New ability to swim for the first time in the series.

So here you go, lots of info to get the mind excited, sounds like its going to be brutal, gory, scary and intense. No sign was given on a release date other than the fact it will be a 2 year development cycle or something, so expect 2009 for a release.

I didnt get COD4 as I knew everyone would already kick ass at it online, I think I'll be getting this, though.

I thought COD was done with WWII period after COD3. Oh well, if it's a darker side, then I'm all for it as long as the tasks aren't like the first ones.

Darker Side? We are the German army now?
I doubt it. From the sound of it, we'll be in battles were the fighting was about more than just about winning "by the rules", but killing at any cost for your side in any way.

The Pacific wasn't a "pretty" or "glorious" war by comparison to the European theater. I think that's what they're getting at here. I've personally always wondered why developers have stayed away from the war in the Pacific, but my guess is that this is why. Its a bit more "dark" than the others, and for that matter, I think it was more deadly as well (I don't have the numbers in front of me).

I would have preferred a continuation of the COD4 storyline, but my guess is that they feel like it would be a Tom Clancy knock off. I dunno, it was still pretty successful either way...

...We'll see when E3 shows up sooner than later...

I knew about co-op but I have been hearing 4 player co-op!!!??? 2 player co-op would be good enough but dang 4 player co-op! I am already sold. 4 player co-op with vehicles along with matchmaking instantly adds a lot of replay value. Hopefully its at least 10 hours long. Wonder if they are bringing back the medic. That was my favorite soldier. Hopefully they release a beta or demo but at this point I am already planning on buying the game. It has 3 of the main items I look for when buying a game.

Doesn't sound to hot to me. Im so sick of the WW2 story lines in all the games that seem to pop up every week. How many times can they do this boring story line setting!? I like COD4 because of it being set into the current time, mainly because of the weapons. Theres nothing that i hate more than trying to shoot someone with a single action gun that has iron sites, i might as well be using a slingshot. I do like the addition of vehicles though, so i will check it out but im not getting excited about it. IW has made a mark on the series and i don't see anyone else touching them.

What about 4 player co-op and true matchmaking? That doesnt excite you about this game?

I don't really care about any type of co-op style play really. Everyone of my friends are pretty much horrible at FPS games so having them with me would only be frustrating etc. Im just so sick of this tired genre of war game, get on with some new ideas people. Its like all the movie companies just doing movies from the 80's over and remaking older tv shows. Come up with an original idea, or at least an innovative one. I like certain aspects of it like the AI playing dead and the flame thrower that actually has effects on the map. Im not saying its for sure going to be a big pile of turds, i will wait until i can play it to decide that or not. I am just saying give this WW2 genre a rest, and that they won't be able to top IW :)

Hopefully they make the co-op full co-op campaign. And if they do it right they will allow other people to join during the game. Basically a drop in drop out co-op campaign like RSV2 and GOW2 had. I highly doubt it will be like that but I sure hope it is.
What I am worried about is them making only a couple levels that you can play thru with other people. THey call that co-op but its just not as fun if you only do a couple levels that arent even part of the campaign. Turok did this and so did GTA4. They have co-op but not co-op campaign. I guess we will have to see.
I also hope its a true matchmaking online.

Thats not even co-op in my eyes. What a horrible excuse for co-op, if its not the entire game then it shouldn't even be considered co-op. Hopefully this game will be great because i hate wasting money on horrible games, and i love good games....who doesn't? lol

ugh, im not liking what i see in the screen shots so far. What is the deal in video games nowadays that they are all a dookie brown mixed with other bland colors? And then they will always have a diffuse glow effect on some of the play like in the 3rd screen shot. Hopefully this is just rough cut type stuff. Does anyone know the length of time when they finish they will have in development? Usually the length of time it takes to develop the game helps you judge the quality of the game. Take EA, they try to push out a game with a 1 year development time on it and you see what happens to theyre titles....ugh. I remember reading about NFS:PS and i was so excited because i hated the underground series with all the rice thrown around like a 80's wedding. So i went out and wasted 60 bucks on PS. Its sad when a game like HIN 2 was more fun than a game that is suppose to be something....sad....

Insightful criticism, there... It's also (presumably) made by the same people that made COD4, which kicked butt.

Infinity Ward made COD4 - the makers of COD 3, Treyarch, is making COD5, so I presume that's why he made that comment. But an explaination of why is was bad would help, since all the CODs have been similar gameplay-wise.

So maybe he has a point after all? My bad, thanks for the info! Still, from the trailers, it looks pretty good...

I'm personally not looking forward to it, I only got intrested in COD4 because it had finally moved on from WWII to modern warfare times. Now its gone back to WWII, I'm frankly not intrested. Yes, I know there are still plenty of stories to tell in WWII but frankly there are plenty of new stories about new wars to tell, what about the Gulf War? The Falkland War? Even the Iraq war?

For me even if this game will be "great" graphically and gameplay wise. It's lost its shine towards me. I also know several others who will be dissapointed about the switch back to WWII.

Some new information came out of E3 early this morning:

G4TV
At their press event last night, Activision dropped a lot of exciting info on the next Call of Duty game. Call of Duty: World at War is shooter set in World War II being developed by Treyarch. Here's what was revealed last night:

* 24 Actor Kiefer Sutherland will star in the game.

* While we knew part of the game would be set in the Pacific Islands, we didn't know the Russians would play a part as well. Players will be members of the Red Army for part of the game and fend off Hitler's terrible panzer-blitz and capturing Berlin.

* World at War will feature cooperative play with four players online, or two players on a single screen. Co-op will keep track of individuals kills so you can compete while you co-operate, like Halo 3.

Call of Duty: World at War comes out across platforms this fall.

I can't find the article anymore, but from the same website, they also talked about the multiplayer. There will be 2 modes: an "Infantry" mode, where there are no vehicles, just soilder to soilder combat (like in COD4 I suppose), and another mode where you can drive vehicles like Tanks. The experience, perks and prestige levels will also be added. :)

Thats good news about the multiplayer. That way people that like vehicles can play in one mode and the people that dont like vehicles can play the other mode.
I am disappointed that the co-op is not a full co-op campaign. Sounds like its just a couple levels like Turok had. Oh well. Hopefully it has matchmaking like COD3 had.

What would we be doing in that game, gathering poppy seed crops to ship back to america?

I just found out this will have 4 player co-op campaign!!!

WOW thats aweome if its true!! I saw and heard about 2 player co-op but 4 player is excellent news. Dang I am beyond impressed. I will now be buying this for sure. They are already doing everything right that COD4 did wrong. 4 player co-op campaign, matchmaking, and vehicles we can control. Thats everything I want from a game and COD5 has all of that where COD4 had none of that.
