I know you need a mod chip to play japanese games, but can the japanese systems play US games?? I don't have a playstation yet (I use my roomates) but I was concidering getting a jspec playstatoin. Any thoughts?

Only the White Playstation that they sold in the UK can play all region games. They only made 666 of them. If it's not one of those, it will need a chip.

It's called regional lockout, just like for DVD discs, you can't play one regional disc in a different region. Same goes for videogames. You can't play Japanese games (JP) on North American (NTSC) systems, and vise versa including European territories (PAL).

Of course, there are ways of defeating regional lockouts. The best was is to buy a mod chip. Once your system is "chipped," you are free from the lockouts, any system can play any game from any region.

I like the idea of mod chips, but I've been hearing lots of people talking about not being able to play new games. It just seems like much more trouble than it's worth. There are only a couple select games I would want imported anyways. But back to the regional lockouts, I wonder why the white one is exempt? Seems to me that the lockouts are to prevent users from getting games out sooner than the manufacturer wants, or to inforce licenses, so howcome those 666 white ones don't have the restrictions?? Wierd..

I can't remember, all I know is that every once in a while you will find one on ebay for an unreasonable amount of money

I think the reason is because of trade rights between the different countries. They don't want people from america buying all of their games from Japan, because then The United States cannot collect the taxes on those games, and the same for the games in other countries. So if you can't play the games from other regions, you won't go through the trouble of buying them.
