I'm going to get an external drive for my PS3, but don't want to worry about finding another plug socket to plug it in, and all the associated cables. I therefore like the idea of a drive solely powered via USB. Can the PS3 supply enough power through USB to power a drive similar to this?

I presume it can, but just thought I'd check.

It depends on the type of drive. The power output of USB 2.0 is constant, so if the drive was designed to run off of USB power and nothing else, you'll be fine. If it requires an external power supply, then you'll have to use that.

I don't know if this is what you mean but I have the 40gb USB HDD from LaCie and it has a power supply socket. When I plug it into the PS3, the USB supplies enough power to run the HDD.

You have enough information on this matter, so this thread will be locked. :D
