Can someone explain this?

What do these do exactly? Do they help make your card run better or are they the cards themselves?

That's the software, or drivers, that tells the PC how to use the cards. Your card won't function without drivers. The card is supplied with them on CD, but new drivers are brought out all the time to make your card run better.
