Can you decide which cars you race against? Or does the game decide it?

What I mean is how can I determine what kind of cars will I be racing against, depending on the car that I choose. Or does the game decide the best oponents depending on the power/type of car I choose?

I notice when I choose a renault megane I race against other common cars, but if I choose a Ferrari I race against Mercedes Mc Laren etc. So I guess it's the game that calculates the best possible adversaries.

Is that right?
 
The game decides for you... the factors seem to be your driving level (on a particular track), your car choice, and your choice of tires.
 
you can decide who you race against by chosing "limit to manufacture" option. you can find it in the same screen where you select number of laps.
