I agree, driving is so much fun in GT5, but some of the design like credit and xp system is backwards.
 
You know, I rolled my eyes when I saw the title, and this thread will probably get out of control and locked..

But I would have to agree with that assessment as well. :)
 
I can live with that. I bought the game as a driving game more than a career based game anyway. Forza just got old fast.
 
What they need to do is merge the two together and you'd have 99% of the perfect product. All the physics and lists like GT5, but with the full customisation of Forza like engine swaps, etc.

Agreed. This would be the ultimate console racing game ever made.
 
Very well said...although I don't think Forza is a great game either. Both have plenty to improve on. GT5, at it's best, is the best game I've ever played....at it's worst...it's pretty far down there.
 
Seems a fair assessment. It's a shame all comparison threads aren't as well argued as that. Don't normally get a chance to post in a thread like this as they get locked pretty quick.

I can agree with that. Whenever I'm in the mood for fun and great graphics and damage, I'll play Forza. When I'm in the mood to drive and drive and drive, just trying to beat my best time by mere tenths on a wet, rainy night at the 'Ring in photorealism, then I'll play Gran Turismo.
 
GT5 is marketed as a simulator, and its physics model is extremely realistic. The behavior of the cars is startlingly faithful to their real-life counterparts, and so they respond accordingly to poor driving and when you miss critical braking and turn-in points. In contrast, Forza is extremely forgiving, and provides a much larger margin of error.

Which leads one to being a video game and one being a real car experience.
 
I've played the hell out of Forza 3 and currently playing GT5 as we speak. In my opinion, when it comes down to comparing both games as a whole, I think GT5 has better graphics however, Forza 3 has better sound quality.

Let's not get carried away. Neither is a "real car experience."

Each game has a long list of things it does better than the other...

You're right. Neither one can really give you that thrill of going fast. However where the physics are concerned, GT5 IS more realistic than Forza 3.

While the subject is actually valid (and since it's the Mainstream Media and not a gaming publication, a case can be made for it not being folded into the "Critics" thread), the out-of-control part is what really matters.

Simply, if it turns into a GT5 versus Forza thread with no actual discussion of the article, it will most likely get locked. We'll be watching.
 
I love both games, and i will have both soon (getting GT5 soon) but i will really struggle to go back and play Forza 3. Don't get me wrong, i love the game and everything about it, but i have a G25 for my PS3 and an Xbox wireless wheel for my 360 and i just don't like it anymore.
If only to G25 worked on Xbox 360, they would sell so many more wheel, of course Microsoft wont let anything that's useable on the Xbox to be useable on the PS3, except the Fanatec wheel, but that's 2 out of about 8 wheels they offer.
 
I had no issue with forza and respected it and actually had a lot of fun drifting.. However like Aussie not being able to use my G25 turned me off to it quickly.
 
FINALLY, a proper review on the two.

I truly agree with Ca and Driver on this. GT5 is great for the physics as the cars handle like they would/should in real life (and they look awesome too :)). Forza 3 is great for casual players who just want to race, make money, upgrade, and tune their cars, where as GT5 requires a patient and good driver to really enjoy the game.

But if you really love cars and you have both consoles, get both games as they are both great. Thumbs up to both Turn 10 and PD.

Just had a gaming marathon with GT5 and Forza 3 (just bought the classic car pack-Delorean is pretty sweet and so is the El Camino :P), and I think Forza 3 just sucked me back in. Gonna be hard to get back to GT5's physics now...
 
This thread should be locked and get a sticky. Then when anybody else starts the flame war, they should be ushered towards it. It's refreshing to get a balanced critique of both games.

No. Stickies are reserved for important threads. I believe sticking this thread will only cause unparalleled trouble. I have not read the article myself, but if it rules in favour of either game, sticking it will only draw out people looking to criticise the verdict since sticking a thread is a kind of endorsement. As it is, this thread does not need a sticky.

What it does need, on the other hand, is to get back on topic. There will be no more discussion about sticking this thread to the subforum, please. Or else I'll just close it and let it fade into nothingnes.
 
The best news out of this for PD is that they've got the hardest part down now. Getting the actual driving physics down is obviously the hardest issue when it comes to creating a racing sim. They've been working toward that since 97 and they just now got it right in 2010. Of course they'll be able to improve the physics in future installments, but I don't think that there will ever be the type of leap that we saw from GT4 to GT5. It's just very dramatic and far larger than any of the previous installments.

This obviously opens the door for them to put a much larger emphasis on the "game" aspect as they no longer have to spend countless hours trying to hammer down the physics engine. And interestingly they might've stumbled upon the answer to the "game" issue that people have brought up in GT5 in the form of the Special Events. If there's one area that's widely praised aside from the physics engine it's the Special Events. If they can figure out how to turn those into a full career mode then they could turn the single player experience into something really special.
 
@solidsnake - You're right about PD having the hard stuff down. Just look at all the new features! Dynamic weather, damage (sort of), night racing, physics, online, special effects (sparks, smoke etc), all of these things take more time to build than to implement, do they not? And if I have heard correctly from the FM3 section, Forza 4 has night racing and weather, the extent of which is still unknown. This will force PD to bring their A-game (literally) for GT6. I believe it will be a stellar game, now that all PD has to do is bolster the track list with day/night/weather and premium count + bug fixes.
 
The one thing I don't agree on in the article is their comments about the graphics. No way Forza is equal to GT5. I have both games and I really prefer GT5's physics. To bad there are so few events . . .
 
It's completely inexcusable that GT5 had more time and money put into it than Forza could even dream of, yet Forza is very comparable to it. With developers like Naughty Dog putting out a Game of the Year with only two years of development time, and PD taking almost 6 years to make a game that's got a Metacritic rating of 84/100 (12 points lower than Uncharted 2) - I seriously think Sony needs to look at different developers in the future. This has been an exercise in inefficiency, questionable priorities, and disappointment.

I always felt the same. If GT and FM had a baby, you would have the bast driving/racing game ever.

GT5 is already the best selling first party PS3 title and it's been out less than a month. I doubt that they're going to mess with PD (thankfully). At the end of the day Sony is about making money and no franchise makes them money like GT.
