Why in the world does the game allow me to enter a race with a 943 hp car vs 400hp cars? Race cars vs classic road cars? etc.

Since some of the car descriptions mention real world races they were entered into. I wonder why the game doesn't classify cars itself?

For instance, my car description could say 'eligible for scca xyz and etc. etc.'

Better yet, have the races themselves have real world class restrictions. "Any car from the USA" isn't a very good restriction.

As a a guy that doesn't know much about cars and loves the game. I have no idea which of my cars are a good match for the ones in the race, or which to buy for certain events. It has become obvious to me that hp alone is not a good indicator. The game should restrict me instead of my having to guess on how to restrict myself. Furthermore, it would be fun to become familiar with real world classes and race restrictions.

This isn't Forza. Plus in gran turismo your supposed to challenge yourself, not make the game a cake walk.

I've never played Forza and wouldn't know a thing about it. Read my post again and tell me how a guy like me, whom doesn't know much about cars, is supposed to challenge himself, when I have to make 10 guesses each race as to which cars even compare to eachother? I've got some 400hp cars that smoke 900hp cars, so obviously it isn't as easy as looking at hp. The game should assist me in some manner in classifying cars for a challenging race.

Which 400bhp cars "smoke" 900hp cars and on which track?

Sounds like you need to challenge yourself there. Dont leave it up to the game.

TC it would be nice for them to implement it, maybe it can be done in GT6. Just be wary, there seems to be an elite syndrome around here at times.

At first I used overpowered cars wherever I could but as I progressed further into game (and gained some skill) I returned to early events. This time it wasn't about easy money but competing. Highly enjoyable.

In the race entry screen there is a box labeled "typical opponents" ( or something like that ). Just to the left of the "race requirements" box. It has a list of the cars you will be racing against. Use a car from that list, and use the tires that are a requirement in the same race in B-spec. The tires listed as required in B-spec are what your opponents will be using.
That's what I do for somewhat of a challenge. Just an oil change, no mods. But usually the A.I are not very good drivers.
If you don't have B-spec leveled up to that race, to find out what tires to use, just ask someone here.

For example, my stock Furai with racing soft, beats AI toyota 7 and AI jaguar race cars in Rome.

As far as challenging myself, I suppose people aren't getting it. My OP is asking for a mechanism to do just that. I want to challenge myself. The point is that it is hard to guage which cars will be challenging, but still possible just by looking at them.

If the game would tell me what class a car falls into, it would be easier for me to pick comparable cars.

I'll try that. It would require more money to buy cars for each event vs being able to compare cars I already own, but it's better than nothing. I didn't know the B-spec was a mirror of the AI in A-spec. Thanks.

GT5 Prologue had a Performance Points system which took account of Power, Weight, Tyres and Aerodynamics.

Like you, I don't know enough about cars to determine what will make a reasonable race against the AI opponents, GT5P's system was a great help.

In GT5, I've jumped into a few races with over-performing cars that appeared to fit the power/weight of the AI.
