After gt3's car sounds I really hope they improve the sounds of the cars, I mean that would be dissappointing that they have that great looking of a game and then the sounds are crap or nothing like the real cars.

Nick:banghead:

btw, I don't think they need to change the physics that much... I'm not really worried about the physics actually if they say it's gonna be more realistic. It can't get any worse than GT2 can it?

not really... take for example the camaro and mustang... I don't really use them that much but they don't sound anything like I've heard on the road stock or not...

I was in a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, and it sort of sounds similar to GT3 when you punch the throttle down, minus that little squeal I hear... doesn't really sound as muscle-ly as in real life. Some people blame this on how great your sound setup is, but it just doesn't sound as great as it should. Kind of takes the fun out of punching the throttle, but then, I feel quite content doing that with a GT40 or a Zonda in Gran Turismo.

I thought a lot of the car sounds in GT3 sounded very poor to their real life counterparts, so theres still a long way to go I think :(

Well for one thing I'll bet the only sound you can hear in a car like the Mazda 787 is the sound of the engine. And the pit crew radio. You wouldn't be able to hear tires squealing. You wouldn't be able to hear other cars on the track like in GT3. So that could stand some improvement.

Well you have to take into account how many cars are in GT3 let alone the amount in GT4, now PD have to try and get the engine sounds for all of these cars which is quite a task. Anyway the sounds could do with a bit of variety, the cars in GT3 sounded too similar.

The engine sounds in GT games have always come from the real life counterparts. Perhaps not every car, that would be to time consuming, but the cars in GT3 that sound the same are using the same engine in real life. So I'm sure PD shaved off some time and just made the simular sound for those cars. Example: JGTC Skyline - Tommy K. ZZ II

In an interview/article with Yamauchi, PD has relayed the following info about car sounds: "Like previous GT games, Polyphony spent hundreds of hours digitally recording vehicle sounds. It's not just a matter of slapping a mic on each car. Sounds are recorded from the engine bay and exhaust tip at a stand still. Each car is then taken onto the track to record sounds at various rpm under load."

I'm pretty sure all of us here has heard about the recording sessions they had for all those different types of cars. It looks like it was for GT4 purposes, as well as creating a vehicle archive.

I think GT3 has very good engine sound and I t hink it really depends on your sound setup. with my elite setup i can hear the engine at idle, hear the turbo spool up and the BOV drives me crazy when you go over a rumble strip. The Mustang, Camaro sounds just like the real cars but not loud enough. I've never heard the 787b in real life but from the sound/video clips i have heard GT3 is pretty close.

I think you have a good point here. I have a 500 watt Yamaha 5.1 receiver that I run mine through using Dolby Digital over optical connection so my sound is ... well ... bad ass. When I crank the volume and the sub starts to rumble the room I can really feel the engine. Then when I punch the accelerator and the engine winds up I would assume it's reaching the volume levels of real cars.

Are those of you that are complaining using the basic TV speakers? Those aren't designed to reproduce high quality sound.

I really don't think it should matter if you have a "good" system or not, as long as it's not like target special computer speakers or something is should sound at least decent.

I have a simular setup, but a Sony 625 continuous watt 5.1 receiver, and I have to turn my subwoofer off. It's too loud with it, and GT3 doesn't have a dedicated low frequency channel anyway.

It's to bad the PS2 can't have 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound during game play. Here was the same article said about GT4's audio format.

"The game won't support ProLogic II, DTS or any other audio formats, but it will support an internally developed virtual 3D audio format."

The GT series has always had an outstanding audio format, and GT3 sounded amazing in surround sound. So I'm sure that GT4 will sound just as good as GT3.

Never been in a NSX but have heard a few of them run at the local track. All of them looked stock and sounded stock very mechanical clanky like sound cant really hear the muffler. Like the 350z but i think the NSX sounds meaner more growwwl. i think PD did a good job with the NSX engine sound because it sounds just like a real NSX should sound like VROOM :)

btw what does a US spec 3.2 ltr NSX run in the 1/4 ? the one i remembered ran 13 flat dont remember mph.

Are you sure? SSX (Tricky maybe?) had DTS options which I had enabled. As does GTA:Vice City.

I never played those games yet, but I'm sure DTS option is for the in game FMV's. MGS 2 had Dolby Digital Surround Sound in both mission intro's. The first one, with the rain and the vehicle traffic on the bridge, sounded awesome, but there was no "digital" surround sound during the game.

So I have learned, DTS, or other "digital" surround sound, is not possible during game play on the PS2.

have to remember that sounds within the cockpit of the car sounds MUCH different than outside the car. a car can sound really wimpy from the inside, but it can sound vicious on the outside. im not sure where abouts a car PD records all its sounds, but if they only recorded the sounds from outside, they might have to makeup the sounds in the inside.

It's possible but for it to be in use during the gameplay it takes up more processing power so if the game is pushing the PS2's limits without the DTS then theres no chance of it being in, it also takes extra work to include it and so many developers hav'nt bothered.

I don't know about you all, but either way inside the car or outside the car (in game) or good stereo or not... it doesn't sound the same to me.

It would'nt be than good if the pad constantly vibrated though, I race go karts and the wheel on them is always vibrating and by the end of a race your hand aches soo much and for that to happen playing GT4 would'nt be nice.

I agree that the sounds should be taken from the inside as well.

A good thing to hear is that they now record (at least some of) the cars under load, which was missing from the development of other GTs. This explains a lot of the difference in sounds between in game and real life; as well as a lot of my disappointment with the series, it has to be said (although fitting that racing spec exhaust to my 91 supra TT was an eye [should that be ear?] opener as it was the first time I noticed a difference in the sounds the cars made in the series).

But then, why are we really complaining when the GT series has the best sound-a-like-iness  for any car in any computer game? (aside from perhaps some single model racing games like F355 challenge)

Vibration is fine, Sony / PD doesn't want a million people claiming for RSI or Industrial White Finger now do they?

Edit -> I wish I cud spel

So, what you are saying is, it's not possible.

I never heard that before. I imagine the game must really suck if had Dolby Digital Surround Sound, or DTS, on constantly during game play.

I hope LoudMusic can confirm those games had DTS during game play.
Both games seem like they amlost reached the limit of the PS2's abilities. I might pick one of them up it they do.

Hey, do you know anything about High-definition games? PSM magazine said there were a few for the PS2, but nobody knows for sure. They said SOCOM Navy Seals was one. That game is $20 now, I think. I might pick that one up too, if it's in Hi-def. I asked developers, and they all said no, they don't have any. To be considered Hi-def it must be 1020x680 in progressive, and 1760x920 interlace, I beleive.

The only thing that bugs me about GT3 car sounds is that all of them have that whirring-jet-like-charging up noise, and i dont mean the spooling up of the turbos..they all sound like that..

Car sounds are alright. Boxer engines sound like boxer engines, Honda inline fours are like Honda inline fours. They even made the ivtec rsx sound different.

I just wish they had a bolder vtec crossover in the b16s, b18s and h22.

GTA: Vice City has DTS sound. "Only" four channels, but you don't exactly need a center channel in a game.:) It does make a (slight) difference, and I wouldn't say the game is bad. Violence may not be for everyone, but killing pixels can be fun.:D
