Last night, finally, I unlocked all the remaining locked cars in my game. So, it's 44 out of 44 now. Time to get the money to buy them all I guess :dopey:

This is what I can remember about car unlocking:

1. The "secret" code -

In the main screen, using the D-pad, press: Down,up left, right, right, left, up, down.

You will hear a rev sound. This will not only unlock but also buy you the 599 XX and the Stirling Moss McLaren.

Beware, if you sell them, the code won't work for a second time and you'll lose a lot of money.

No idea on how to unlock these cars without using this code.

2. Challenge Mode - In each of the stages you have an invitational race where you are supposed to use a locked car. If you win that race, you unlock the car.

Cars unlocked through the invitational races in Challenge mode are:

- Ferrari F40
- Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
- Ferrari F430 Scuderia
- Ferrari F430 Challenge
- Ferrari 550 GT

3. Arcade Mode - beating each level unlocks at least one car. In my game, it was like this:

- Easy unlocks the 250 Testarossa
- Medium unlocks the Ferrari 360 GT
- Hard unlocks the 612 System 3 and the 512 M
- Legend unlocks the F430 Spyder

Feel free to add and/or correct the info above :)

I have the 250TR and the 360GT but I don't remember playing in Arcade Mode. I suppose there's another way to do it. but I don't have the 612, 512M or F430 Spyder. And they're the only cars I have yet to unlock. So thanks for that. And I need money myself. There are still a lot of 'expensive' cars I need to buy. It's a shame you can't earn money by racing on-line.

Now forgive my ignorance, but in the manual it says that if you do the invitational things in challenge mode you unlock a car and don't need to buy it or something?

Does this game actually give you cars at all, or have I missed something fairly obvious?

There are four different ways to unlock cars.

1) Accumulating Race Points (earned in Challenge Mode).
2) Winning the Invitational Challenges (in Challenge Mode).
3) As GTP_Hun mentioned, winning races in Arcade Mode.
4) Using a promotional unlock code.

Using the promotional code awards you the car immediately. All other methods "unlock" the car which you can then "purchase" with money you earn by playing any of the offline modes. So it's possible for you to unlock cars but simply not have enough money to purchase them. Or you can have enough money to purchase cars but can't if you haven't unlocked them.

Jeff, I got the 250 TR and the 360 GT like this following advice by Derek (turnupdaheat), so I guess it's the "common way" to unlock both these cars.

About the 612, beware. The Scagietti is won in the invitational race at Paul Ricard. The System 3 I got yesterday night after beating Arcade on "Hard".

If it's like in FC, the cars are exactly the same bar the position of the driving wheel (612 System 3 has the wheel on the wrong - UK - side of the car :D )

But, even if they are the same car, the game assumes it's a different one. So, if you want the Scaglietti, you'll have to do that race at Paul RIcard :D

PS - One of the arcade levels (can't be sure if it's hard or legend) also features a race at Paul Ricard, so I don't think you can avoid it anyway

I'm pretty sure both the 599XX and the S. M. McLaren were unlocked from the box... I'm going to try your code anyway since I don't yet own any of them. :)

I thought so too...bracing for the frustration of not being about to blast around in a 599 that's been worked over turned into awesomeness that I could do that...then back to frustration at the slowness of the money level raising speed in my virtual bank thing. If there's one thing every game should take from GT4, it's the Amalfi rally reward. Quick, easy, fun, and enough money to do anything to any car instantly (well, most things to most cars, but hey I wouldn't complain if I could make $260,000 in 10 minutes, would you?)

I was able to unlock both these cars without using the code. Dunno what unlocked it, but I now own both. Though the SM McLaren is woeful.

You need to collect 30,000(?) Race Points by racing in the Challenge series.

It seems like the cost of the cars is a bit illogical - sometimes cars which you would expect to be expensive are not. It does seem to take take a while to accumulate money though - especially a problem, because the AI is so atrocious that racing offline is not a very appealing prospect :indiff:

Well, "unlocking" cars through race points is easy enough. But what ticks me off is that you don't earn credits racing on-line. There are still three cars I need to buy and it forces you to race off-line in order to earn the money to buy them. It's really just a hassle.

Yeah, and it's even quicker in the 333SP. But it's still a pain in the tush and a ridiculous way to move ahead. I have such limited free time as it is, the last thing I want to do is run 30, one lap races just to earn credits.

But it's exactly because we have limited time that we must resort to this. When I have time, I go to Tournament Mode and clean a few more, earning some cash along the way. When I NEED a car quick, I do a few 599 XX oval 1 lap races and that's it, problem solved.
