According to RottenTomatoes, it's a rare engine failure from Pixar.

Rotten Tomatoes has never liked cars because it isn't what they want to see from Pixar. They want emotional movies from them, like Finding Nemo and Toy Story, not an action movie, like the first Cars and more so the second Cars. Regardless to what they say, Cars 2 is an excellent movie. The plot has more depth and foreshadowing than any other movies I've seen in a while, and it all ties together nicely during the film. I wish they had a little more character development, but they did their best considering how many new and returning characters there are.

Saw this last night. Had heard a few reviews say that it was a bad movie but I can tell you it definitely isn't. It is very much a cartoon bond with some comedy. The car jokes and way real life parts of life are converted into an automotive equivalent is very smart.

Anyone with an interest in cars would appreciate the movie. It is definitely different from anything pixar has produced so far.

I heard that Cars 2 is a box office hit, with $110.9 million in worldwide gross revenue.
Commercial success does not guarantee crtiical success. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN earned hundred of millions at the box office, but critics took to it like starved pit bull terriers to a helpless six-year-old.

I don't think it's because it's an action movie. I think it's because the story focuses on a character that's already had enough of the spotlight from Pixar & the character most people expect it to be about is more of just a sidekick.

Saw it last night. Great car movie for sure! I actually found myself car spotting the whole time watching it.

I watched it yesterday. Epic, epic movie... :) I don't care about critics, the movie is fantastic :D

You do realise that Rotten Tomatoes is not actually a review site, but an aggregate of all reviews, right?

He still has a point. People have come to expect Pixar to be shelling out "Best Picture" quality emotional dramas with deep stories. Now that they have seeming made a movie that is just "fun" it has turned people off. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm definitely going to go into it expecting something lighthearted and funny - much like the first Cars.

Pixar is still lightyears ahead of Dreamworks when it comes to the track record of quality storytelling and original content. Come to think of it, I can't think of a Dreamworks animated feature that could come close (maaaaybe the first Shrek).

I'll probably end up waiting for this on DVD.
I would go see it, but I no one else I know want's to and I don't feel like going to a movie like that on my own.

Saw it last weekend with my daughter. She liked it, I enjoyed the car spotting and obscure references only car geeks would get. After all, how many other movies have references to Whitworth measurements? Feature David Hobbs, Jeff Gordon, and Lewis Hamilton?

Admittedly, it's missing a little bit of "heart" and deeper meaning, but trades it off for a little more action. I could understand how the average moviegoer would be bored by it, because it's an otherwise so-so movie for kids...a typical sequel. Good sequels go deeper into character development, but one would be nuts to expect that from what is ostensibly a kid's movie.

...Unlike Mr. Cranky. (Language warning)
