I just randomly decided to look for a thread for this because it releases soon. I'm very surprised that no one is talking about it. I recently watched the latest trailer at an IMAX scree and my hopes went up big time. Racing sceens look very good. Now as long as they get the races themselves somewhat right without any dumb stuff then I guess I will be happy even if the story might turn out bad.

There's a scene from the film included in F1 2025, and it didn't give me great hopes for the rest of the movie. It'll do well, casual fans will like it a lot and anyone who knows even a little about the sport will be laughing and/or crying.

The reviews haven't been too bad, but personally it's just not for me. I find movies like this toe curling, but I don't think I'm it's target audience anyway. I think it'll appeal more to the Drive to Survive crowd, more casual fans and there's nothing wrong with that - but I'll be quite glad when it's finished with and isn't being thrust into our faces at every GP weekend.

Went to watch it at IMAX today.
Not going into any spoilers, but even though I said it wasn't going to work etc, it was better than I was expecting from a narrative perspective, and tbh it was more a movie about redemption, if you have watched Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, this is the Brad Pitt you are getting.

My only complaint is once again Hans Zimmer! although he seems to have found some drums to replace those dam horns, but you have the F1 cars and they don't sound as good as previous F1 cars, the music is blasting out over the sound of the cars, which imo is stupid.

If there is a bluray release there best be an audio option to have no music.

Mark Kermode's review is spot on, if you have a passing interest in F1 it's worth watching and I think this needs to be watched on the biggest screen you can as I don't think it will translate well on a small screen.

I saw it yesterday with my wife and kids.

80/100

Predictable? Mostly...

Realistic? Somewhat...

Patched together from pieces of racing history? Sort of...

Honestly, I've always wanted to see an F1-themed movie since the 1980s, so I was willing to cut it some slack. There was more on-track action than I was expecting, which was a plus. Some off-track stuff like sponsor requirements, team meetings, semi-analytical stuff was thrown in there which is about as realistic as Drive to Survive, but with less [beep]ing. I was pretty good about blocking out much of the hoopla and talk before the movie, which also helps.

Downsides are that there's only so many places a sports-themed movie can go and still be believable, especially after Rush and well...Cars. While it was slightly less campy than Days of Thunder, and the CGI was pretty good, it's also missing the visceral grit of a suddenly-wet Spa in Grand Prix! (but let's face it, that was sheer luck and almost an unmitigated disaster).

In short, 13-year-old me would have loved it, 32-year-old me would have hated it, and 51-year-old me was satisfied with it.

Not sure if I'll own the movie one day but I'll watch it again on an airplane.

Look, this movie was Top Gun Maverick, you HAVE to forgive the corny, non realistic corny movie stuff, not everyone is a jet fighter/ racing junkie. You have to also build those movies for the general public, I.e. my wife.
Personally, if you forgive that minor, unrealistic racing stuff, it was a great movie (in my opinion).
