Cartoons these days suck rocks. But I wonder if the kids who love Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh are better off not knowing how friggin' cool shows like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, M.A.S.K., etc. actually were. Heck, even the crap 80s cartoons were 10x better than anything on TV today. Remember Captain Planet? Or Buck Rogers? Or Bravestar (the intergalactic cowboy-sherriff?)

Anyway, here's a thread to talk about your memories, comment on the crappiness of cartoons today, even remenicse about those kick-a$$ toys you used to have as a kid. Discuss.

Are you sure? Almost all of the Adult Swim stuff (ok...I'll admit that some of the stuff if a little out there) is far and away the best stuff on TV. Now or ever.

Ulysses 31. Mysterious Cities of Gold. Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds.

Owned.

Sponge Bob owns!

My kids like Dora The Explorer, SB, Pokemon, Max & Ruby, Scooby Doo, Fairly Odd Parents, Little Bill, Rugrats, Tom & Jerry and The Bear Family.

Today, I like the usual adult cartoon shows.

Does anyone remember Plastic Man? The 'Evil Weed' was always the bad guy. Heh, marijuana, man.

Famine, I've never heard of any of those shows. I suspect we're going to have a cultural rift open up here soon. Spongebob is good, but I find after one or two episodes it just starts to fizzle. I know liking whatever shows were on when you were a kid is bias-forming, but I used to tune in to Transformers and G.I. Joe religiously. Nothing could stop me. I even tried with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to get some of that youth back, but that show just plain sucked. Adult cartoon shows are not valid in this comparison. You can't compare a cultural phenomenon like The Simpsons to Thundercats, it just isn't the same thing.

Anderton: Have you played the Transformers game? It's alright - I rented it a while back. It's kind of strange though - feels weird. I also get the impression that it's built on either the Red Faction or Red Faction 2 engine.

Boy did you miss out on a childhood. I've seen every single one of the shows you mentioned - and my three knock spots off them.

Maybe you had to live over here to appreciate it...it was a huge hit with kids the world over I'm sure, but in North America it was everywhere. Lunchboxes, pyjamas, bed sheets, T-shirts, shoes, hats, Halloween costumes, TV, movies, you name it.

And neither the Autobots or the Decepticons had any spots. Beast Wars, a shameful abomination, maybe...

I had the Optimus Prime Transformer. The big one with the trailer. I loved Transformers. Mysterious Cities of Gold rules.

Did anyone else watch "Belle and Sebastian"? No one ever knows what the heck I'm talking about. It was a story about a boy who's parents had died and he lived with his aunt and uncle or grandparents and had a huge husky dog that he rode through the countryside to see his friends.

And there was that show about the koala bears. Which I never can remember anything normal about because it was one of the most screwed up shows on television, but it was so entertaining.

Sorry Loudmusic, never heard of it. But I'm sure it really did exist...in your mind! Just kidding.
Famine, yeah a lot of kids had Optimus; he was, after all, the best one of them all. I also had Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons. He was a grey / black / white / silver robot that transformed into ...get this...a handgun, which fit perfectly in any 6-year-old's hand. Ahh, the toys of the 80s were almost as awesome as the shows.

I don't think it was from the 80's (though I think I first saw it then) but I do remember Battle of the Planets. It was the first time I ever saw Japanese animation.
How does the recent He-Man series compare to the original?
Oh and Dangermouse! But I think you have to be British to know that one!

Most of them do. The only cartoon show I watch is Beavis and Butthead. They're pretty cool. They started in 1994 [or 1993 can't remember.]

Does anyone remember Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars?? It only ran for 4 months, but holy hell did it rock.

Then there's Ninja Turtles, Captain Planet, Looney Tunes, Popeye, and countless others. It's a shame, kid's shows are total crap nowadays. Although there are exceptions, 99% suck ass. I finally saw YuGiOh the other day and literally yelled out, "What the **** is this ****?!"

Oh and milefile had a great thread similar to this one here, but this topic is always fun to discuss. :)

Pole Position
Grape Ape
The Ghostbusters
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Smurfs
The Globetrotters (show based on the Harlem Globe Trotters, not sure if this was the actual name of the show)

;)

The dog was a massive white Pyrennean with what appeared to be lipstick on. I remember... :D

I remeber a few of these shows, vaguely. Nearly everyone has seen Transformers. Robotech and the vehicle version of Voltron seems to be rarer. We used to have betas of Star Vengers or something like that, and the Ultra Man cartoon. Tranzor Z had good theme music, I want to hear it again. Of course there were the Go-Bots. The Incredible Hulk cartoon, though the only episode I can recall is the incredibly shrinking hulk one where Banner fought a Gila monster.

The Real GhostBusters was great for it's mythological references, even going so far as to have Tiamet and Marduuke fight each other.

Older cartoons seemed to be looser in violence, though today's are getting up there, and sometimes surpassing the oldie. But the oldies were more prone to annoyances, such as GI Joes DARE speeches and ThunderCats laughing at stupid crap at the end of the episodes. Laughing at things that are not funny unless one is 5 occurs in a lot of tv. Sad, indeed.

I think I saw some of Mysterious cities of Gold, but remember so little. Wasn't there some knd of Ancient Mexican them to it with this magic boy, or something?

I think there was a cartoon called Sparticus or the Spartans, or something, but that's more of a feeling, as it has haunted me for a while that it existed.

One word: Gumby.:D Banana Man was awesome too. One '80s show I never want to see again is Rodger Ramjet, god, I hated that show so much.

Talentless, I remember the Go-Bots! They were a cheap knock-off of the Transformers. Their toys were pure crap, but were usually made from like 80% metal and 20% plastic, so were pretty heavy and good for throwing at someone and injuring them. I remember I had a red one that was supposed to change from a Datsun to a robot, but really it changed from a Datsun to a Datsun with two long skinny legs.
Voltron was cool too, but there were only 5 lions and so it didn't take long to get them all and make the big guy...

Famine
Mysterious Cities of Gold.
Whoa. This was aired in English too? That was the awesomeness! (main reason I visited Machu Picchu 2 years ago) :D.

I've also watched GI Joe (tons of cool toys), Transformers, Goldorak, He-man, inspector gadget... If you remember them with the eye of the kid you were back them, they're way cool but... I also thought the same about Knight Rider! :p Perhaps that's why we think current cartoons suck.

Anyone watched Il Etait Une Fois?. Really liked it when I grew up, especially the episodes that took place in the future.

👍 that was fun too.

What I really didn't like thought, were Japanese melancolic cartoons (anyone saw Demetan?).

Anyone remember the one I recently used as my avatar?

Dungeons & Dragons, best cartoon ever! I´m still waiting for the final episode though. :(

Other 80´s cartoons I used to watch: He-Man, She-Ha,The Smufs, Ghostbusters, Captain Planet, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Popeye, WB cartoons, Disney cartoons and lots of others.

Up until I was about 12 years old I used to get up on the weekends and watch cartoons from around 7:00 AM until about 11:00 pm ever saturday. There were so many good cartoons that I had to decide which channel to pick every half hour. I eventually wrote them down on a piece of paper to keep track every weekend. Hmmm trying to remember but I know Transformers, Ghost Busters, Ninja Turtles,Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry, Thundercats, possibly Garfield (but it was just ok) were all on the list. Hmm what else was there. :scared:
Oh yeah I had all the transformers toys I could get from my mom. She gave me one every time I got an A in school. And I had no problem getting all A's. 👍
My favorite were the little transformer tapes. :)
Ohh just remembered He-Man was the other cartoon I watched and had all the he-man action figures. Skunk man was awful smelling.
-Simpsons almost forgot. I practically grew up on the Simpsons.

I don't remember if it was 80s or 90s, but there were these short bits that Nickelodeon ran with cats and hippos (??) playing sports together. Kind of like Spy Vs Spy shorts. So incredibly funny! I loved them - it would be cool to have them on my computer.

I had this He-Man plastic sword when I was about 8 years old, but I started to hit my sisters with it, so my mum took it away from me. :guilty: I was just trying to have some fun. :D
