Reasons remain unclear, journo's on twitter tweeting about it still at the moment, main qoute appears to be "I will be finishing my career at the end of this season in MotoGP, and go forward in different things in my life."

Was a lot longer and waaaay more detailed ad on information too it though.

EDIT: Just read MotoGP's timeline https://twitter.com/#!/MotoGP

It's not particularly easy for anyone to keep on racing after the last season. Especially if you're a familyman.

He's only 26. What will he do instead?
V8 Supercars?

Yes, in the past he has shown interest in the V8 Supercars. Whether that's something he'll pursue sooner or somewhere off in the future, who knows. Good luck to him though, he's had an excellent run in grand prix motorcycle racing. 👍

I'm a Rossi fan myself but it would be a shame to see him leave, even when Stoner is way out in front it is still exciting to watch him slide his bike around. At least that makes space for Marquez next year.

But why!?!
He has several more championships in him.

I wouldn't say several with so many brilliant riders coming through but at least a couple more.

Maybe WSBK?

Seriously? I remember when Rossi in 2010 was injured he still set a lap time which was a tenth faster than the fastest WSBK rider who raced on the same track the day before. Injured, past his peak and he hadn't rode the bike but still a tenth faster. Stoner would wipe the floor with WSBK riders.

Looking forward to Marquez's graduation, but he wouldn't be able to replace Stoner. Since 2010, the rules have stated that a rookie can't ride for a factory team. Although I think those rules do not apply to stand-ins who were previously "test riders". This didn't apply to Suzuki as they didn't have a satellite team.

Wild theory here, but I wonder if Valentino is thinking of getting in touch with Honda. 💡

I doubt it, he has an option to sign to 2014 apparently. After his first encounter with HRC, I doubt he'll go back but he has said that he wants to continue in racing for at least another 2 years.

Rossi in, ah well.. As much as I thought Marquez will be there if not because of that rule :indiff:

But on topic, this is certainly very surprising. One thing for sure, he has driven the V8 Supercars before so if he's after that, I won't be surprised at all.

HRC said that they'd never have Rossi back after he left them for Yamaha. Interesting move for Stoner, huge respect for such a tough decision.

Yes, he has an option. But he can opt out at the end of this season. He could take all his personnel with him to Honda too.

Marquez is immensely talented and isn't a risk like some rookies may be. I wouldn't be surprised if his team moves up to MotoGP and he is given factory Hondas and full support, just under a different banner to get around that rule.

Oh yeah. Forgot about that.

I don't think anyone saw this coming. I agree with most of the guys on here, V8 supercars will let him stay in AUS whereas WSBK would see him all over the world again. At least he can spend more time with his daughter who has the same birthday as Valentino

It doesn't surprise me at all. I raced dirt bikes for about ten years from my early teens to twenties about thirty years ago and now at 50 I am paying the price physically. Sure he is at his peak at mid twenties, catch up to him in 25 years and see how his ankles and knees are doing. Of course the bike and equipment tech has come a long way in that time, but as usual the racers just keep pushing it. Might as well get out now why you are a hot commodity and can go do pretty much whatever you want.

Whatever happens when Stoner leaves I hope there are some big changes at the top teams to make things more interesting, I loved it in 2009 when Rossi, Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Stoner all hated each other and would take chunks out of each other whilst pulling away from the rest of the field. :) I miss having "4 aliens". :(

I'm betting on health issues being the reason. He had issues with fatigue a few years ago that was linked to "lactose intolerance", never bought that then. Now he's been having issues with arm pump towards the end of the race; I'd bet money that he has something serious and is retiring to deal with it 100%.

This was my suspicion as well. I will miss Stoner despite being a Rossi fan but it'll be interesting to see who fills his shoes next season.

Jorge is out of contract end of season, so Jorge to Honda, Vale back to Yamaha if the Duke continues being a dog....

As for Stoner ->:indiff:

He is a good rider, but not the best in a generation good. He is good when he has the best equipment, and that's about it. I certainly won't miss his arrogance, and the conveyor belt of new talent coming up from Moto3 will fill the game easily.

I was confused by this. He's only 26! He has many more years. He was just getting started in his career. It would be interesting for him to do V8's.
