Caterham...

I apparantly have just learned the correct way to pronounce Caterham. Apparently, its 'KAY-trum.' How do yout get that pronunciation out of a word that should be pronounced 'CAT-er-ham?'


Not saying they are bad cars, no way, just wondering on how they got such a weird pronunciation.

If I'm feeling very american, I'll call it a Catt-Err-Ham; otherwise it's Kayterum. H is silent, A is quick and relaxed.

I always thought it was "Kat-er-um." Sometimes I can't hide the fact I'm from Michigan, the whole nasally thing gets in the way. Because you know, it isn't "fraan-ce," its "fr-ann-ce" (emphasis on "ann").

I've always pronounced it "Kay-..." for as long back as I can remember knowing the name. It wasn't until a year or two ago that I learned that the rest of it is pronounced "ter-(h)um," with a silent or barely audible H. So Omnis is right.

As a Brit i can safely say it's pronounced Kay-ter-rum, as most of you have already pointed out. Caterham is a town in Surrey (just south of London) wher the company is based - just in case anyone is remotely interested

FireEmblem62 is probably correct in saying that how 'Caterham' is pronounced and how it should be pronounced are two different things - its just a quirk of how the English use the English language.

Birmingham in the UK is generally pronounced 'Ber-min-um' where as Americans probably pronounce their Birmingham as 'Ber-ming-ham' with distinct gaps between the syllables.

I pronounce it 'Kay-trum.' But this is coming from the woman who called Lamborgini Countachs: 'Count-ackkhs'... but then I was told it was 'Coontash'... I dunno.
And I pronouce Birmingham 'Ber-min>g<-um'

Lamborghini Gallardo, always thought that was Gall-arr-doh, until my dad tought me otherwise (after I saw someone say it in a video and thought they said Gay-arr-doh)

I HATE that too, it doesn't make it any better when that music 'artist' Ne-yo says 'Gall-ardoh' in his new song either.

I actually pronounce it in true Spainsh style, 'Guy-arrrrr(roll it)doh'

I always called it Gai-yar-doh. I take spanish, so I know how to say it, the "ll" is a "yeh" sound.
