You wouldn't rather have a new iPod than a fixed one that could potentially break again?

As Danoff put it, Apple only gives you back new goods.

Actually, no... it depends on what you get, it could be a refurb but yeah... I'm just saying they could be a bit smarter.

although I'm sure you're aware, the title "Apple Genius" is like Subway's "Sandwich Artists", doesn't exactly require a creative mind to put lettuce and meats onto a piece of bread.

Ya think. :dopey:

Anyway, I got to play around with this phone a little because a friend had it. Meh... Same functions as a pda phone only, it cost you $600 to do it.

I'm trying but it's hard to hide my nano and video a lot of times. xD

Seriously though, I'm an apple hater. yes

Dude, if you taste the apple, you will love the apple.

My cousin had one bought for her, for work purposes the day it came out. Problem is, she lives in Houston, and has no plans to return to Grand Rapids until the Holiday Season rolls back around.

Crap.

Either way, I was told by my Aunt that she really likes the phone, but she has had connection issues with it more than once. Its no surprise really, given that it is AT&T, which has to be the WORST cell-phone provider in North America. But given her nature, I'm uncertain of how she will ever use all the utilities. Then again, I wouldn't have pegged her for knowing as much as she did about computers, so God only knows...

IMO, Apple made a HUGE mistake pushing this phone through AT&T only. Not only does AT&T have the absolute worst network here in the US, they really would have an easier time getting to the market they want (males, ages 18-35) with companies like Verizon or Sprint. Furthermore, both companies would have had the tools to better utilize some of the programs on the phone, namely the whole internet rundown.

If the phone was say, $400 less, was on the Sprint network, and altogether seemed less likely to break than it does as of now, I'd be more apt to getting one.

That being said, I too have high hopes for where this points the entire phone market in the near-future. I know Motorola was baking-in some similar features in the RAZRII, although I've never heard what exactly made it in and what did not. Furthermore, I highly doubt that Blackberry will take this all sitting down, given that they've pretty much had this market covered for a while.

===

This does bring up an interesting question: Will cell phone companies (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc) be more likely to bring in tech-filled phones such as this in the near-future to bring in more customers? There is an outrageous amount of kick-ass phones that Americans have never seen from the European and Asian markets.

One would hope so...

pah, who needs an iPhone when you could look even cooler for a small fraction of the money

not me, btw

Gizmodo has a great review up - doesnt hold any punches.

Being Canadian, I've not seen an iPhone in person - and wont until Q4 2007, or early '08. No plans to buy one though. I'd not want it in it's current state, I'd wait for a few software updates before even considering it.... and a massive price drop.

ok, played around with one this weekend. I love it. Smooth, functional, sleek, stylish. I think Apple set a new standard for how a multi function PDA should be.

Apple deserve a very hard and direct kick below the belt for one screw-up. The phone does not support Stereo BlueTooth Headphones. Yes, Something Verizon has had since last year, Apple missed. Even on top of touting this as a Music player.

I hope in Gen 2 of the phone they fix this one.

Overall, if it were on Verizon, I know the wife would be Jonesin' for it.

Good thing you waited for the price to drop!

As far as it being AT&T, I see that as a problem for some parts of the US. I think many other carriers would fare better. I did read about a guy who "unlocked" his iPhone, and has it running on T-Mobile. *goes to look it up*

Yeah, it's possible to unlock the phone to use with other GSM carriers. AT&T's coverage area is very impressive though. Every major city in the US has full coverage. About the only places that dont have coverage are the places in the middle of nowhere, aka the middle of North Dakota or Wyoming.

I was just wondering when the iPhone 'officially' comes out in Australia, as it's not advertised on the AU Apple website nor the local tech store's catologues.

And, is there something I'm missing here? Why is this iPhone only $410AU when this, 'unopened' version is $190 more expensive at $600? It sounds a little strange...

Because it looks like the guy claiming the unlock on the $400 is talking out his ass. You cannot have an unlocked iPhone still new in the box... it must be hacked to be unlocked and at best running firmware 1.1.2 from what I have seen. The $600 one seems far more likely to be legitimately unlocked. Of course, all it takes is upgrading to 1.1.3 for some reason and you are instantly SOL with a brick for an iPhone.

We’ve got some disappointing news for our friends from down under. According to Crazy John’s, Australia’s largest independent mobiles distributor, the iPhone will not show up in Australia anytime soon.

Crazy John’s marketing and sales chief Stephen Morley said “I don’t believe the product is imminent here in Australia

At the same time Apple stated that is has plans to release the iPhone in Australia later on this year, but no dates or carrier of choice were named as of yet.

And mobile carrier Vodafone said that it expects the iPhone to arrive in Australia only when a 3G version will become available.

“Most handset manufacturers’ range of devices in market are designed to provide customers with high-speed access to content, such as mobile music, mobile TV and entertainment, within coverage areas. Vodafone would be surprised to see an iPhone released in Australia before a 3G or HSPA-enabled model becomes available,” Vodafone’s spokesperson said.

And I think paying 600$ for an iPhone is insane.

And I think paying 600$ for an iPhone is insane.

I think paying $600 FOR ANY PHONE is insane... :scared:

I thought $600 for the iPhone was pretty cheap. However, I've never had a mobile phone before (being the only student out of about 110 in my year level without one) so I don't really know what is cheap and what isn't when it comes to mobiles. You pay $300AU these days for an 8gb iPod Nano, so a new, yet-to-be-released 8gb iPod Nano with call capability for an extra $200 - $300 seems typical.

iPhone 3G

Sprite's Review

So I've got an iPhone 3G, I've had it for about two weeks and here are my impresions.

Part 1 - O2 Store

Let me start by explaining the buying process and experience I had with O2. I have been going into my local O2 store for the past few months since the release of the iPhone 3G, I kept going in and playing around with the demo models, this was a good Idea as it let me get used to the touch keyboard to see if I would like it, the only downside to this little trip of mine was the fact that the phones they have on display are in need of a good clean and a restart as they are laggy and very very dirty, also the touch screens seemed to be faulty, but this could be just to do with the fact they haven't been restarted since turning on. Now some of you might say "but its a phone, they are meant to be on all the time" well while this statement rings true for most phones, it Isn't for the iPhone. This phone is basically a pocket PC and does get laggy after long periods of use and been on. I tend to just restart mine every few days or so, this clears the cache and other things and seems to speed things back up again.

The staff in the store were helpful to a point, but to be honest the IQ of the staff was severely low, even for single celled organisms. But with that aside they were polite and did everything ok (apart for one thing that really scared the c**p out of me, more on this in a second). I did have to enquire about the activation process as they didn't voluntary give this to me (I already knew what had to be done before I even walked in the store), plus they never even gave me any other information with regards to the specs or operation of the phone, they just went into the back grabbed an iPhone and sim card and proceeded to take my details. New the scary bit, After I have given all my bank details and address details and other personal information like e-mail addresses and such, the staff member processing the sale left his computer unlocked and took me to the counter, only for me to turn around and find an old women sitting at my vacated seat reading my information, I soon put a stop to it tho and Ctrl + Alt + Del and locked the pc and thus stopping the nosey old bat from perusing my particulars, i then reprimanded the staff member in front of his manager, where the manager apologized, and took over the sale, sending the other guy into the back of the shop. Data Protection is a serious worry in this day and age and i was very naffed off.

Everything else went smoothly and after a whole 20 minutes or so in the store i walked out with a brand new iPhone 3G.

Part 2 - Getting Home & Setting Up

After a long bus ride home, I finally sat down and un-boxed my phone, I quickly looked over the contents and the proceeded to install the sim card and plug the phone into my iMac. I stated up iTunes and activated the phone. Then I updated the phones firmware and set all my Sync options to my taste. This experience was a pleasure and only took about 20 minutes at most, i was then using the phone and trying all the cool stuff.

E-mail

I set up my google mail account up and this was easy as pie, and works like a charm. Incoming messages make the same ring tone as SMS messages and is quick and easy to use.

Wi-Fi

Again this was very easy and proved to be a good experience when logging onto Cloud, private and other free networks, and it even remembers which ones I've used and connects to them as soon as Im within range.

Apps

The other apps that needed a bit of configuring like Contacts (obviously make sure all the data was in), weather and clock all needing some tweaking to my local area. but everything else was ready to rock and roll.

Part 3 - Physical Aesthetics

The phone itself is nice, it feels solid and sturdy, the plastic back feels nice and not at all plasticky (if that can be done), but its doesn't feel alien in your hand, its a nice weight too, and I guess this adds to the feel of quality. Im sure there are people who don't like the look of the iPhone but I personally realy like the plain un-assuming look with its touches of class. The only thing I have against the phones exterior is the fingerprints and smudges, this thing is a grease magnet and after just 30 seconds of use its filthy, and without a case protecting the back of the phone I can imagine the nice plastic at the back will also collect allot of scratches. The glass how ever I feel pretty comfortable that it will stand the test of time.

Part 4 - OS & Usage

Lets get to the juicy bits, how well does the iPhone work as a phone? Well IMO pretty well, no worse than any other phone I have ever had. The voice of the called or call-e are good, however this can sometimes but quite flat and in a noisy place E.G. when walking back from work in the city of Leeds, it can become quite hard to hear the other person at the end of the line. However this isn't a major problem and can be overcome by finding a nice quiet spot.

Texting is so nice with the touch QWERTY keyboard and It's self spelling ability that texting becomes a breeze and I find myself not using text speak and actually articulating my point allot more acing to sending an E-Mail. I also love the way in which all my texts fall into a conversation with the same person, the means lengthy conversations are easier to follow and also allow for quick reference to other things been said.

Also to fit in with the two parts above the contacts bit works quite nicely and it's easy to add extra information to them and also it's nicely integrated into the other apps like, Mail, Safari, Maps & photos/camera.

Then we have all the other apps on the phone, I wont go into each one because I will be here all night, the standout apps tho are Maps, with its built in GPS, this work flawlessly and has pinpointed me flying down the M1 and got me spot on. Also a shout out has to go to Safari, this little version flies along and a speedy pace and has allowed me to view all my sites, the only let down is lack of Flash and Java, but TBH it hasn't made a huge impact on my web experience. Switching between tabs is easy and fast and loading a new page of GTP loads in about 2 to 3 seconds.

I have only downloaded a few apps from the app store and they were free ones too. I got hold of Remote, which TBH hasn't worked as well as I hoped, and Solitaire and Mahjong (or tiles version anyway). These two have been superb. the app store is easy to use and provide good information and screenshot of each app, along with user reviews.

everything else on the phone work just as nice as the other apps but they are so dull and unless you are a corporate user wouldn't use too often.

One thing I have found to be a bit of a pain, is the battery life, I've had to charge it every day since I've got it. But I must admit, I have had Wi-Fi turned on and I have been constantly playing around and surfing the net and watching videos through it so its to be expected really.

Part 5 - Final thoughts

Is the iPhone worth the money Im going to be paying for my contract? YES. Its a fantastic phone and really does what I expected and even had some surprises left for me. I've really enjoyed using the phone but the service I've had from O2 isn't as good.

Would I recommend the iPhone? Yes. I've already shown it off to quite a few friends and my cousin even went and got one the day after he saw mine, and another friend from work wants one but is getting some Samsung instead!! :scared:

I cant think of many things I would change on the iPhone apart from Flash been added, and easier data integration so just a drag and drop principle via a desktop icon instead of syncing with iTunes. Also a better battery and larger storage, if they did an 80GB or 120GB version with twice the battery life it would be heaven. But as it is I'm still using my 80GB iPod classic.

I hope you enjoyed the review.

Not planning on buying one. I'm just gonna wait for a few years for better and cheaper models.👍

Thanks for the review Sprite, your right store models in the O2 and Apple shops are really laggy and dirty as hell!.... as a result the touch screen gives really bad feedback, they should clean and reset them once it a while to not give customers bad impressions. I found the Apple staff not helpful at all about the phone, I swear I know more about the phone than them!, and of course they know nothing about the O2 side of operations!

I dont want to buy one even though im really tempted because I dont want to pay the contract (I have always been on PAYG) and I also dont want to buy it sim free (unlocked by someone) because it will be really expensive. I think I may buy one if my current ipod goes or might just get a touch. Actually some of those iClones look really tempting! :sly:

Robin

I agree Robin, store staff should know more than the purchaser 9 time out of 10. but service seems to be poor from O2.

I was on PAYG and I have been up until this contract, I wish I had researched the contracts more tho, as I'm a really low phone user and a manic texter, so I was a little peeved to find I could have been paying the same amount on my contract but with allot les minutes and infinite texts.

The unlimited data plan is really good and I've found surfing the net on the 3G network a blast, its speeds are really good. and give I have unlimited access to the cloud really makes this phone a gem for me.

I just need to find the time to upgrade my blog then get the blogging app, that will be a time saver.

I'm just going to agree with everything Sprite said, sans activation and stuff with O2. My experience in the AT&T store was much more personal than in Verizon where you must sign in and wait for your name to be called. I broke my VZW contract ($160) for the switch, and I'm really happy that I did. The Glyde would be far too expensive to use in just a few of the ways that I can use the iPhone. 90% of the time my coverage is excellent. My house, one of the roads to college, and one of my classrooms are the only places where I've had problems. At my house I tend to randomly lose service, while most of the time its fine. The other two are almost always dead spots. No big deal though.

I ended up with a black 16GB instead of the white in case it developed hairline cracks or would eventually discolor. Besides the extra smudges, I still love the black. Unfortunately they didn't have any white ones on display so I can't compare them anyway. My plan is the cheapest one with 450 anytime minutes, 5000 night and weekend, with unlimited data and unlimited texts ($20 for texts). So my monthly bill is somewhere just under $100.

My only gripe with the phone itself is that the SMS app needs some fixing. It runs incredibly slow (including a laggy keyboard) sometimes, but straightens up if you exit the SMS app, open the calendar, then return to SMS. Hopefully that is one of the things that the upcoming update (should be September 9th) will fix.

And for the record, I don't have 3G here. :( The EDGE network does its job though. I usually have plenty of time to kill if I'm away from home and surfing the net. Automatically switching to Wifi when in range is nice, but not so much when its barely in range and not really usable. Luckily it is simple to disable the Wifi when that is the case.

Questions?

Don't count on it. That's been an issue since day one for me.
