Alright my contract with Nextel (Sprint) is up in January, so I have to either re-up with them or go with another company. Since I won't be working at GM I won't get the discount, which wasn't much any ways.

But I need at least 2000 any time minutes but more is better, free nights and weekends, nationwide, and the internet. Yes I know I'm on my phone a lot, I pretty live and die by that thing. Text messaging is something I don't want, I think it's stupid.

But Nextel offers me the walkie talkie which is nice since many of my friends have Nextel phones.

I hate going in wireless shops because I always get the creep that trys to sell me more then I need. So any suggestions from you guys?

Also I would like a new phone. Gotta be a flip phone, must be some what big, color screen, and caller ID screen.

Also I should say price is not an objective, I pay like 125 bucks a month for my phone now so its no big deal.

Mother of jeebus, $125 a month? I pay $90 a year for my service.

Anyway, with those “boundaries”, seems like you could go with just about anything. Anything else that might narrow down the field?

Well I would like a camera phone .

But I want good service no matter where I go, I drive back and forth to California quite often and when I'm not near a town I tend to get bad reception. I want something with good service and a good coverage area.

And the reason I pay so much is due to the amount of minutes...but let me put this into prespective.

Last month:

1934 peak minutes or 32 hours....not that hard when I'm at work for 10 hours a day and talk on my phone all the time.

3928 off peak minutes or 65.5 hours...which is bad, but I run my own business so I'm constantly talking on the phone with people on the weekend and at night, plus my plan allows my nights to start at 7pm.

 I thought $45 a mo. was a lot.

Anyway, I'd say T-mobile is for you but only because of the min per cost but the reception is gonna suck ass (most likely) and the phones are more stylish (probably better choices). If you want good service I'd go with Verizon(what I have) but it may get expensive for your levels. :scared: Choices for a phone maybe limited but also maybe free with the service? I don't know about T-Mobile.

I definatly need good service with driving back and forth to Cali all the time. And like I said price is not a problem.

Verizon is your best bet then. And then you can call me for free. :D

I don't know about walkie talkie features and stuff though.

Well with Verizon I can get 4000 minutes a month for 149.99 a month, but with all the extras it will be like $175 a month, which isn't bad. And I can get that Razr phone which just looks cool.

Hmm I'm going to see if Nextel will offer me a better deal

I hate cell phones. I got a samsung sprint...Its a POS! Ive owned 3 just this year. I have had no problems with cell phones until I got this one. Luckily it was under warranty each time. Soon I will be able to get a new one. Cannot wait. Im tired of loosing all my numbers my schedule..etc. because the damn screen stops working..
I gotta stop talkin about it before I loose it..

I must say a good flip phone would be the Nokia N90 if price is not an objective it has got all the requirements you are looking for and better! It probably has the best Video quality in the market as well. Oh yeah as well as flipping it twists!

I know Verizion is trying to jump on the walkie talkie bandwagon and have a few of those phones available, but I dont know if they are compatible with Nextels. At least where I live Nextel has awful phone service areas but if you have the walkie talkie you are ok (all our crews at work have them). Verizon is hands down the best phone service in my area, a little pricier than some but I know I get service pretty much anywhere. Plus all calls with other Verizion customers are completely FREE. Believe me, Ive put it to the test.

As far as cameraphones....I forget which one my girlfriend just got, I think its an LG, it has a 1.2 megapixel camera built in, and can do video clips as well. It also has a memory card slot if you want more than the basic phone storage. Pretty good camera for a phone though, the pictures come out 10x better than the ones on my old LG phone. EDIT: I just looked it up on their website, its the LG VX8100

The more I look at it, it does look like Verizon is the way to go

It's a pity I don't know the American market as well as I do the British because telecoms is my area of profession and I'd be able to help. Whatever network you choose be careful who's advise you go with, simply put different networks will work better in different areas so guy a, "saying yeah network a is great" might be tellin the truth regarding the network in his area, but maybe not in yours. Sometimes theres a significant difference. Also check which networks piggyback other companies networks in area because theres sometimes a clause in their deal where they can only piggy back on a certain antenna for a certain period of time.

This happens over here anyway, we have the 3 network which has it's own network up but only over a small percentage of the UK, everywhere else over here, they piggyback off O2 but they can only use certain O2 antenna's for a maximum of 3 moths then they can no longer use that antenna. This can be very misleading for the consumer, becaues they can buy the phone thinking yeah I've got great coverage, 2 or 3 months later they've got none and it's too late to return the phone or cancel the contract ect.

Like I said, I don't know if it works the same over in the US, but thats just an example of how it's a good idea if your not sure about which network to look into this sort of stuff.

One thing I can say for certain, is if you mean the Motorolla Razor phone (the V3), don't, it's not a reliable phone. It looks cool but theres so much better out there that offers better reliability at the same time.

My advise is to go for a Nokia, Sony or Samsung, they generally offer the best phones in terms of features and reliability.

I've got tons of friends who use different services in SE Wisconsin, along with me. I've been using T-Mobile, and I've got friends with Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon. Of the four, mine has had the most reception on average, along with the least amount of static and lost calls. Now, for my area, going T-Mobile is most desirable, but I'm not 100% sure on the location you're at. As for a good article to read, check out the Popular Mechanics from either this month or last. It has a great article on services and phone types. They back up mostly what I just mentioned.

Verizon is teh suck. Cingular is the way to go.

You do realize that just because you get a **** load more min than I do with Verizon is because you drop as many calls as you have min. but look on the brightside... your paper weight phone looks pretty. :dopey:

I dunno... probably rate it just above Cingular for reception here. :nervous:

Nextel offered me a good deal so I'm going to take it 3 year contract, but I get a free phone up to 299.99 and 2000 anytime, free night and weekends, nation wide, walkie talkie, GPS, internet, and free caller id and voice mail....all for the low price of 110 a month.

Now I need to find a phone.

Alright I just got my phone, a Nextel i850 with unlimted minutes and all the extras for 179.99 a month. Now I'm on my phone non stop.

Well, i was about to suggest something Sony Ericsson, but i don't think they make any decent flip phones. I hear those razr v3 things motorola do are good. They aren't exactly big, but they fill just about every other criteria :)

EDIT

Oh, ok, you bought a new one already

donbenni
That sounds expensive at $180, aside from the unlimited minutes, are you getting anything really special for it?

TeleNav (GPS Directions), Internet, E-mail, IM's, Unlimited Text Messaging, Unlimited Media Transferring, Fully Insured Phone, and Nation Wide.

They arn't relible, they have features but the chances are you'll be having it replaced a couple of times in the year at least. they're packaged well as a night out phone, but they arn't a good choice for a contract since you'll be without a phone every now and then waiting for a replacement to arrive.

By the way this is what it looks like

Ok, I'm obviously way late on this thread but I was going to suggest cingular. I have cingular and the Motorla V3 and I like both. What I like about cingular is that they have AT&T's old network so they have coverage in the middle of nowhere. I've been happy with their network (a lot happier than with sprint) and I've been happy with their prices. No problems yet with the V3.

However, you have way way way more options and minutes etc. on your phone than I do, so I have no idea if cingular is priced well at that level.

Jesus Christ, I thought my $56 a month was alot.

On a note about the Razor phone, my buddy got one for christmas and drunkenly dropped it off a 3rd story balcony on new years eve on to asphalt. Other than a minor scratch, nothing happened to his phone so I guess by now they are probably pretty versatile.

They arn't unreliable because they fall to pieces if you drop them, they malfunction. anyone's lucky for their phone to survive a drop like that though, 99% of the time the phone would be well and truely broken.

But I can talk as much as I want due to unlimited minutes.

My next phone will be a Sony Ericsson K750i or Nokia N90 (or the successor to them if they come out by then). I am also no longer signing any multiple year contracts.

You'll get a better phone and tariff in a longer contract, but at the end of the day, you do have to stick with it for longer. Pro's and con's, imo 12 months is enough, by then the average person can't wait to replace their phone, having to wait another 6 months or year isn't nice. My business phone is on a 3 year contract, but thats only becuase it's my busines phone and setting myself on a 3 year contract gives me more profit than simply upgrading once a year over a 3 year period. My personal phone will never be on anythin over 12 months.
