1- that depends on the moral dilema at hand, and (2) can only be controlled by the designated (hopefully elected) leader(s).

IMO

Maybe if you were a little more specific,.... whats the censor? Speech? Is it a visual image?

I guess my tentitive answer would be it's ok to do when it's in the best interest of the audience as a whole.

The question: "Who gets to be the censor?" is the same as asking who gets to decide "when it's in the best interest of the audience as a whole."

The medium is not important.

On a forum such as this one its up to the moderators. And they being human may make mistake or err on the side of caution. We are free though to express our displeasure at there actions or point out the error in their ways. I'm guilty of posting a porn link in another thread . I was stupid I did not think of what effect it would have on a 13 year old like my own son for instance I am glad someone more intelligent than myself cuaght my error and censored my ass. If I thought that I had an argument I would have made it. Thats one example of censorship another is the language filter. Its very easy for an older (ahem) adult to forget that there may be younger ears / eyes around. The filter helps keep us from offending their parents sensibilitys. I guess in a public forum such as this with such a diverse demographic censorship of some form is desirable. Besides what would the poor mods do without it besides be referee's in the post war of the words ? Poor mods would get all bored and their brains would shrink from lack of use...hehehehehe

Well, if it's Jordan's House Rules, because it's Jordan's House, then he's free to legally censor whatever he wishes. You're free to join or to ignore the forum altogether. And if he were truly doing an awful job of it all, then nobody would stick around.

However, "Censorship" (with a big "C") is toughie. You do have imagine what content you'd like others to see. I'm sure you don't say anything and everything to a 3-year-old that's starting to repeat every darn thing it hears? We don't want to give away military strategy that could possibly be intercepted? There's a point for not saying somehting...

Now, think about what sorts of content whould make a certain medium "appropriate"...if one person is allowed to get away with something, then everyone ought to be able to, to make the rules fair. It depends on the level of chaos or class you expect out of that medium.

Do you want the local news to show you photos of bloody accident victims, or would you rather have them show you an agle that's more distant? How about coarse language; would we really be better off if every Top 40 hit had ****, ****, and b*tch in every lyric? Does "pillow talk" between Hollywood actors need to be part of daily news? I could go on...

Now, I think censorship should start at home, but it should also be addressed in every household. You can't tell Little Johnny "Don't say those words, or else!" if he hasn't a clue what they mean. I say, there's lots to educate a child or teenager about, keeping and interested child "in the dark" about issues like drugs, sex, bodily functions, religion, etc. should be addressed when the child asks. I think, hiding these sorts of things under a rug only makes it worse.

When is it okay, if ever?
Seems like all the points have been addressed. It is okay when it is for the atmospheric good of the environment.

Who gets to be the censor?
I do... :mischievous:

:D

Censorship. Big topic. I believe that your freedom of speech ends where mine begins.
You have to take into account what effect your "outburst" is going to have on those around you.
Two cases in point: You don't yell "FIRE" in a crowded movie theatre. You could potentially incite a riot.

The original broadcast of "The war of the Worlds". Because it was broadcast without station identification, in it's entirety, it scared the crap out of everyone in the broadcast region. There was a very large-scale panic due to folks thinking we were being invaded by men from space.

People should have the right to speak freely and candidly. However, if the point of that candid, free speech is to harm another, whether intentionallly or collaterally, the speaker needs to hush.

In this forum, Jordan makes the rules, and they are fairly liberal.
Them's the facts. Abide by the rules, and everything will be cool.

Self censorship, our responsibility to measure our response and our words is different from having censorship imposed on us. For the sake of discussion when do you think censorship is not only appropriate but necessary ?

I don't agree with censorship, for the most part.

That sounds really contradicting, but I really don't want to explain in any more detail.

I have censored a number of people. When I am out in public with my family and someone is swearing I let it go the first time but if they continue I ask them to stop because I have a child with me. If they continue, I stop asking politely and step away from the family and put a scare into them. That usually works.
As far as this board goes I guess it's up to the moderators to decide. If things get out of hand and the moderators aren't stepping in then it's easy to just stop comming to the board or that thread.

I think censorship should be family-controlled. Everyone matures differently, some physically early, some mentally early. Families are the only ones that know how mature their kids are, not the government or some pannel.

I love it. Most of the responses mean, at their core: I'm against censorship unless I (or my pre-approved agent) think it should be censored.
