Changes for the 'Location' Profile Field

Even in such a small country, it's quite far to travel from 1 side to the other, so provinces would be nice.

We have a completely different feel about distances here in Belgium :)
100 km to me is like 1000km for an American probably.
 
Now that I've seen it in action, I feel differently about the idea and I missed the specific locations of those of you who actually use the feature properly. I've returned the previous open-ended location fields, but they now carry a limit of 25 characters. :)
 
Spending less time in your car = more lazy ?

I think that at the end of the day the list of states, territories, counties, and countries will be so huge that it would have been better of leaving it the way it was.

Guys, GUYS…if we put every country province or districts or states or whatever you call, we are going to have a so long list that it would take ages just to find one little country.

Sure, there are the United States states displayed so why wouldn’t my country have it to? Because, the majority of us (GTP) live in the United States and let’s not forget it is a BIG country (ok Canada and Russia are bigger).

I agree with Smallhorses idea, we could put the name of the region/state/district/or whatsoever in there, but then again, why bother? If you really want to know where someone lives, why not just ask?

And please, stop this nonsense about there are no Belgian regions or you can put the British districts in the list or the Australian……sorry to say this, but sometimes you guys look like children, always complaining about something.

Thanks Jordan!!!! :D But its not that it really matters anyways...... But may I ask something? How come when you change something, you always had to revert back to the old one? The rep system is just something to forget about. I mean, you just changed the rep system and in a matter of days, it got totally removed from GTP. Maybe I have a suggestion, why don't you discuss with everybody first before making a change? Like a poll maybe? :)

Take another look at my posts in this thread - I didn't try this out because of popular demand, nor did I revert the changes because nobody really liked it. It is very impossible to make everyone happy on a site of this scale, so I ultimately must do whatever makes me happy. That may sound a bit narcissistic, but when it comes down to it there should be nothing on this site that I dislike.

Unquestionably, such a change in the Location field would have never been able to pass a vote. It's a restrictive change, and restrictions are never popular with anyone, on the web or off. However, I believed it was the best way to achieve what I wanted - more realistic location descriptions from users. Upon waking this morning to many users having updated their profile, I actually felt the opposite of what I expected, and I missed more of the descriptive locations the original field allowed. So, I brought it back for the simple reason that I wanted it back, not because I "had to". Had it failed a vote, I'd be left wondering how much happier I'd be with the feature. Now, I've tried it, I know it's not so great, and that's fine.

It was the same scenario with the reputation system. I knew the changes may ultimately lead to its demise, but the quick abuse of the system made me upset and I was forced to realize that many of our users were not going to be able to use the system responsibly. So, I made a note of it and moved on. That's what is great about running a website - I can make changes quickly and easily, whenever I want. But if I'm tied down to doing whatever is popular, as opposed to what I think is best for the community, I don't think we would be where we are today.

Not really man, you pay the bills so the site should be how you like it. If others agree with what happens then great, if not, then thats too bad.
 
The idea that Jordan has is a good one, unfortunately for it to work the way he wants it to, it would need a list longer than Max Mosleys horns.
 
In the five minutes I saw it before I jettisoned off to work this morning I thought it was a great idea, and I think you should keep it, but as an option between type your own location in, to a general list of countries/territories/states. Sure it would have been kind of a lengthy list (~250?), but for the people who did use it, it would be a nice way to see who's from where and so on.

Let me say you can't be against people who is supporting a project. It's like the business.

I'm agree with the fact of the owner has the power to move on his preferences, but the owner has the responsibility of finding the balance between that and what must be in a global site. To manage a 100.000 users system is not a preferences game, unless you want to crash something.

Seriously, I'd need information about social psycology theory to keep talking about this, but the difference between restrictions and improvements are quite evident, objective mostly.

Well thanks Jordan on the explanation. I mean, you are the GTP admin, and you do have the right to do whatever you like. But if your happy with the way it is, we're happy as well. Whatever changes you made, will benefit the rest of us (or well, most of us anyways....)

Actually he managed it for quite some time before Premium membership ever came around. The advertisements probably pay for the vast majority of the site upkeep, your Premium membership means you pay for the priviledge of not being bothered by the adverts. ;)
