I will be changing the outer driver side CV boot on my 90 Civic in a few weeks when I get the time. Anything to watch out for? I had a look at the disassembly...seems fairly simple and the only tool I need is a big gear puller type of thing for the suspension (what is it called?). I plan to do this with the car on jackstands.

Before you suggets that I change the whole axle and not just the boot...I monitored the boot very carefully and it was driven no more than 150 or so miles while ripped. I am fairly certain that the joint is okay...and it is a $90 part (not including $60 core charge) versus a $12 part. If the joint starts ticking I'll just pull it apart again.

Most CV boots have a steel bands holding them on so you need a special tool to replace it, are you taking it somewhere to get that done once you take off the shaft?

When you replace it make sure that it is fully inserted and clicked in to the gearbox (if it is a push in type) because sometimes it seems in but not fully and a oil leak occurs.

you wont really need that big gear thing... if you rotate the shaft further around you'll see a dowl pin like thing that is up inside there close to the transmission.. you'll need to push that the majority of they way through... dont' knock it all the way out.. it's PITA to get back in :)... plus u might need a couple of wrenches on the hub side.. and to collaps the CV enough your going to have to get the ball joint out of the lower transverse link. when that is loose you should beable to move the hub/shock assy and brake assy. far enough away that you can slide the axel off the transmission. see if you can get your hands on a Chiton's or Hayne's shop maunal at your local library.. they have good general information..

RALLY ON!

Thanks for the advice people.

I have the Honda shop manual for the car, it is about as good as any Chiltons.

The manual did not mention any special tools for the clamps; is it possible I will be able to get them off with just a screwdriver?

And I havent been under ther yet (as you can probably tell by my comments) but I'll look for the pin you mentioned.

I dont know what clamps that honda uses, its not about getting them off(as im sure that can be done with out the tool) its about reclamping them back on. Some you need the tool some you dont. Wont know till you take them off and look how they are secured.
