Sometimes you do need to reformat the HDD to fit with the OS but if it is a new one, it should come with some CD of some sort.

But aren't laptop's HDD hard to change? I wouldn't even touch my laptop though if we are talking about a Tower then I would. Don't you have a recovery disk?

Most Laptop HDD's slide out the side after you unlock a switch.

It seems to me that the HDD should already be formatted, but I think you'll need to reinstall the OS. If that's the case you should be able to boot the computer up from the install CD and then install, and if the HDD isn't in the correct format, it (the installer) should ask you to format/partition it. (Most current Operating Systems include a built-in Partitioner with the installer)

Keep a backup and keep the original HDD around incase you mess up though, as you can slide it back in and use the computer.

Who is the Laptop manufacturer? Did it come with the driver disk? The reason I ask is HP doesn't make drivers for the laptops available over the net. Only the latest updates. My sons friend had a HDD die and he bought a new one and had me install it. I found all the drivers from various websites but still could not find the video card driver. It took many hours of searching.. Good luck. BTW, you can buy a driver disk from HP for around $15 which would be the best way to go. Installing the drive takes 5 minutes.

its hp dv9000 yes its hdd, its easy to change im just worry about formatting it cause the hard drive im getting is 500g oem, its not from hp.

Yea ill keep my original hd just incase i mess up lol.

Just insert the OS installer disk. You can use it to format the drive and install your desired OS.
