yeah, it was good. I was killing myself laughing about the Led Zepplin song that if you play it backards, it says something like, `this is to my satan` ha, that cracked me up....

No surprise that it's a pretty fubar list. Some great albums are on there, but there are tons of albums that are merely ok, mediocre, or are just plain crap. For example, I think we can all safely agree that albums like Paranoid, Zeppelin IV, and Are You Experienced, for example, are better than, for example, Definitley Maybe, Jagged Little Pill, and anything Oasis has put out.

Also worth noting are the exclusions of massive albums such as Who's Next, Van Halen, 1984, and The Wall, just to name a few.

You can tell this list came from the UK, especially with all the British metal. Overall, I guess the list is pretty boring.

The only album I would put above OK Computer is The Bends. Those two albums are miles and miles beyond anything I have heard from any other band.

Call me an RH fanboy if you must.

Madonna? Nirvana? Coldplay?

No Van Halen or Aerosmith?

Blah! Obviousally there are plenty of worthy bands there... But
not all of them. Nirvana? Kurt Cobain was a loser. Was a lousy
guitar player, married a loser woman and then blew his brains
out. I think someone else said it.... The best sound he was
responable for making is making the sound of a gun going off.

Abit cruel but the first thing I noticed was that nirvana was above dark side of the moon, so I have to agree.

Yeah, I was alittle harsh about the gun part. Even though I dislike him I
probably would stop he or anybody else from killing themselves. However,
even though I wasn't listening to rock in the early 90's I still got tired of
hearing about them.

What gets me is why is Radiohead #1? I don't think they are even close to being good. Also some of those people I don't think I've ever heard of.

One thing you have to remember is that Channel Four is a British channel. Thus, the bands listed will be of British poularity.

You can't take albums from different genres and decide which is better. It's hard enough to make a decent list in just one genre. You can't compare Elvis to Public Enemy.

True, but this list is a comparison of popularity and not greatness/influence, so cross genre comparisons can work here.

Meh, it was voted for by the public, so what do you expect? They evidently got the demographic right, because there's no manufactured pop in the list. And all of the albums on the list have significant musical merit, whether you personally like them, or whether you agree with the ranking.

My personal observations would be that Blue Lines is in fact Massive Attack's worst album, and that their most-recent, 100th Window should be in the list, much higher up. And am I the only person that thinks A Rush of Blood to the Head was better than Parachutes? Or that whilst Music for the Jilted Generation was a piece of Godlike genius, The Fat of the Land was cynical market manipulation devoid of artistic merit?

The albums in the chart came into 4 categories:- Far too high, too low, shouldn't be there at all, and some glaring omissions... so here, in my (probably unpopular) opinion, are some of them, with some explanations.... :D

Far too high

1 RADIOHEAD - OK Computer (oh come on, the best album there is? Nah...)
6 OASIS - Definitely Maybe (Above the highest Beatles album??)
9 GUNS N' ROSES - Appetite For Destruction
16 ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill (This album really is like rain on your wedding day... ironic, don't ya think?)
30 DURAN DURAN - Rio (Puh-lease...)

Too low

7 THE BEATLES - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Should be top 5)
10 THE BEATLES - Revolver (Should be top 5)
17 LED ZEPPELIN - Led Zeppelin IV (Should be top 10)
74 STEVIE WONDER - Songs in the Key of Life
78 MARVIN GAYE - What's Going On
83 LOVE - Forever Changes
92 NEIL YOUNG - After the Gold Rush

Shouldn't be there

27 THE DOORS - The Doors (Strange Days AND L.A. Women are better albums)
50 THE LIBERTINES - The Libertines (We'll see how long this album remains in the chart...)

Should be there....???

Too many to list...

I agree with most of your post, except for these excerpts.

Appetite For Destruction deserves it's spot. It's definitley one of the best hard rock albums of all time (although there are a few that I feel are better in the same genre).

Sgt. Pepper's should be #1. The most popular album from the most popular band ever, and the album is still as popular as it ever was (Despite being nearly 38 years old). And many would argue it's the Beatles' best album too.

The Doors debut deserves a spot on the list, simply because it's worlds ahead of some of the tripe on the list.

I'll do something like touring mars:

Too High:
2 U2 - The Joshua Tree - A good album, but not the second best ever.
3 NIRVANA - Nevermind - Again, it's a good album, but I think Nirvana is really, really overrated, should be around 50, not 3.

Too Low:
64 RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Should be well above Oasis and Madonna.
22 RADIOHEAD - The Bends - Should be around OK Computer.

55 BOB DYLAN - Blood on the Tracks - How can Bob Dylan not even make the top 50?

Shouldn't be on there at all:
6 OASIS - Definitely Maybe
9 GUNS N' ROSES - Appetite For Destruction - C'mon, you know there's much better hard rock than Guns N' Roses, they're really cheesy.
15 OASIS - (What's the Story) Morning Glory - A decent album, but not in the top 100 of all time.
16 ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill - More like top 100 most annoying voices ever.

Overall though, it's a decent list, better than most of the ones I see

Couldn't have put it better myself... 'Blood On The Tracks' is my favourite Dylan album and is sure-fire Top 20 material, 'Desire' not too far behind.. they actually got the cover wrong for 'Blood On The Tracks' too, showing the cover for 'Blonde On Blonde' instead :dunce:

I too think that "Sgt. Pepper's should be #1"!!! 👍 I also totally agree that the Doors should be up there too, but 'Days' is better the 'The Doors'? Still, a very worthy album... also, I must admit that I used to love G'N'R when I was younger... (but what happened to Quadrophenia??? :sly: )
