Characteristic F40 understeer: Where'd it go?

Haven't driven my F40 for quite some time, in fact almost none in GT6, so I decided to go a few rounds on the ring tonight...

What happened to the understeer I used to love this car for? CS or even SH the thing is on ice with nothing but snap oversteer.

I've run a 1:36.8 in GTA Round 2 so it's not like I'm a total idiot (not the best either).

Before people start giving the blanket statement that "all the MR cars are nerfed" don't go there. I don't believe that, most are just fine.

Anybody else getting this or am I just THAT far off my game with it tonight? It was all I could do to turn a 7:56 without dying at every stinking turn :ouch:

I'm not going to label you as a bad driver, but are you aggressive like me and try to trail brake as late as possible into a corner?

If so, dabbing a little bit of throttle while you brake (much easier with a wheel) keeps the back end from overtaking you, but it will introduce slight understeer. Better than oversteer on braking, right?

^ Yes. I watched the video where an F40 is driven around Tsukuba (in a race or similar) in 1'03.70. I tried in freerun sports hard, knowing full well that the level of grip is very high, and my _first_ lap was 1'03.68. And I'm not especially fast. I've never laughed that hard with this game.

Used multiple different strategies as well as adjusting the BB and overlapping throttle/braking (which is a pretty standard technique for MR).

"Dabbing" the throttle would just kick it out faster. The only way to get through the corners was to make sure it was completely settled before even looking at the turn and then keeping a very constant light throttle angle through turn in until just before apex then smooth carefull roll on. I run a G27/Open Wheeler rig.

You have to go to Comfort Soft tires IMO
I did use CS until I tried SH to see if it would be any better, not really.

I was running all aids off including ABS/0, edge grip real. The car is not modified from stock in any way.

After sleeping on it I'm starting to think that I really was simply carrying too much speed on turn in and missing some apexes. Even still it just seems 180° backwards from what I remember. In real life people have reviewed it as presenting initial understeer corrected by adding power to induce stable and controllable oversteer, this isn't that at all.

Perhaps it's just too darn light and stiff for the green hell.

Well, SH tire is equivalent to nowadays semi-slick tire. And you compare your time to a video which is 20+ years old. Tire technology has advanced quite a bit from back then, you realize that?

smskeeter23, you should look at the video mentioned by Thematic, though. F40 is a snappy beast in real life. Look how the driver never keeps his steering wheel in one place in the corner, he's constantly correcting it by small (sometimes not that small) movements. It has a natural tendency to oversteer, if you hold steering wheel on the limit in one place, it will spin out. Nowadays cars are set to safe understeer, the F40 isn't.

@smskeeter23, try to drive with one foot if using semi automatic gearbox.
Car handles well when driving with clutch and h-gated shifter, anyhow letting simultaneous gas+ brake alone, also check your downshift technic, be on right gear when approaching corner, before turning in.

I did get all this sorted at Tsukuba this afternoon. 1'03.2 first run and 1'02.4 after a small bit. Same as last night CS, all aids off, track edge real, G27 H-gate heel-toe.

I think I was just that "off" last night compared to today... which makes me think I should go work on Round 2 a bit more again 💡

With the controller it's impossible to drive the F40 without power steering.
With the wheel I don't know, it's been a long time since I used it.

The F40 is pretty manageable compared to the Diablo and Diablo GT2. Those two want to rip your head off no matter what. :sly:
With a wheel you just have to be smooth. If you want to trail brake, release very slowly to not over-rotate the car.
For a controller... no idea. Set it up to understeer and go from there.

Interesting to see just how close to out of control these guys are really driving don't you think?

Way more apparent than watching purpose built race cars.

Cool videos. Now I'm gonna have to go run Suzuka with it too lol

From what I understand, the F40 is a very tail happy car, when the power is on. As we all know, the F40 is infamous for its turbo lag, so it takes a bit of time for the power to get on, if you're out of range.

Here's a nice video of Chris Harris taking both the F40 and its younger sibling, the F50, out for a drive.

I've never driven an F40, but I have driven an F50, and I found it to understeer a bit into turns, but then again, I was not an experienced driver when it came to MR. I compete mostly in FR cars IRL, and currently in a Porsche GT3, but at the time, that was one of my first experiences in a MR car. I guess it takes time to adapt in and out of these things. I find it difficult to adapt to our Porsche SCCA racer after long periods of inactivity.
