Chevy Beat, Groove, and Trax concepts; No US Beat, but Groove and Trax

So they WON'T be selling the one I wanted, but they WILL be selling the one I DON'T want.

So they're gonna sell the two I don't want, and keep the good one for themselves?! What's wrong with people!!??

I believe the Beat won the drawing, but the problem is, it would take too long and cost too much to re-design for the American market. That's when the GM brass say "ooops, sorry kids!"

As far as the Trax getting the nod, I'm only assuming that it is. Given that its showing up in Transformers 2, and that it has a lot of GM cars debuting in it, it just seems to make sense.

If they keep the Trax faithful to the concept, a 1.4L Turbo and a cheap 4WD system should make it an interesting buy for those of us here in the snowbelt. Otherwise, they'll have to keep it FWD for everyone else.

As for the Groove, well, I wouldn't be totally disappointed either. To me, the Trax just looks better, but I'm sure the Groove will be appealing in the same way as the Honda Element, Scion xB, Kia Soul and Nissan Cube (Did I mention we're getting the Soul and Cube next year?).

The Trax is kind of cool, reminds me of the little 4x4 on Top Gear two weeks ago that was dressed like a fox. If I'm still living in the area when it comes out and I'm in need of something new I would probably think about something like it. People still love their 4x4's but do not love the amount of fuel they gulp, GM would probably sell a ton of these...unless people still have a bad image of the Tracker.

Jesus, I forgot about the tracker... That's a very, very good thing.

We have a problem:

GM Doesn't Seem To Know What To Do With The Beat

There have been far too many spots of the Beat on American shores for a car that "won't be sold here," and now that we're finding them with dealer plates...

..."something" is officially up.

Who wants to bet GM is bringing it here now?

It's always struck me as a bit odd that Chevrolet would design a car, show it along side two of its US siblings and then just not bother to sell it over there. I think it'd be the first time that Chevrolet actually made something that wasn't for its home market, am I right?

It would surprise me if it wasn't sold over there, to be honest. I was imagining something the size of a Matiz, but that spy shot leads me to believe it's actually of a reasonable size - maybe about the same width as a new Fiesta, and that's supposed to be sold over in the US, right?

Either way, I'll have one in lime green please :D

Nah, there are a bunch of cars south of the border (ie, Mexico, Brazil, etc) that have never made it to the United States. Cars such as as Corsa and Astra are available as Chevrolet models in Mexico, as is the Meriva, and this crazy thing they call the "Tornado."

Chevrolet, as a global brand, now has more "special" models than they have at any other point in history. But, as you pointed out, it is very odd that they would debut a car in North America, and not sell it here. Especially when they asked us to vote on which one we liked best...

GM Needs To Make Up Its Mind...Or Already Has

Chevy-Beat-Detroit.jpg

From the Today show this morning, Ed Welburn showed the car off to the Matt before the NAIAS. Interesting that they'd preview it on American news television like that, especially when they know this is what people are looking for, and that they've had so many development mules on the road in the US (not to mention the car in Transformers 2).

Hmmm. Something is fishy. I don't think GM want's to get their ass handed to them by the Fiesta this year (probably would anyway), or ever, and so the project remained on the green-lit path.

I see an Aveo Replacement. Don't You?

;)

I'm also willing to bet that the Trax is being canned, as the image of the SUV continues to plummet, and the HHR already occupies the "SUV-Inspired-car" spot. ('40s Suburban)

My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't be a bad decision.

Anything would be a major improvement over the Aveo in that category. GM has pretty much neglected that segment for years and I'm assuming this is a serious effort to get into that game. Hopefully that effort will show.

I'm hoping so, but technically, the Beat is supposed to be *smaller* than the Aveo. Perhaps GM is looking to limit overlap by going smaller, and then introducing a decidedly mid-size "small" Cruze.

So, does anyone know how they will fit this into their range?

I'm not completely sure. I figure there are two different ways they'll do it:

- Beat --> Aveo --> Cruze --> Malibu

- Beat --> Cruze --> Malibu

I don't know for certain what the future of the Aveo is, considering that it just received the nose job and has the G3 spin off coming soon. My best guess is that it lives on temporarily until the Beat shows up, and possibly falls by the wayside.

I think that would most likely be based on the Corsa D platform (Fiat Grande Punto) but it looks ten times better than the new Corsa. I really think Vauxhall messed up the style on that one!

Robin.

But, if the Aveo stays, how will the pricing work? Will the Groove/Trax be sub-$10,000 cars?

I can only assume so, but I really do not know for certain. The pissing contest that Chevrolet is in with Nissan on "America's cheapest car" maybe gives them a reason to make it sub $10K, but if they're looking to make a profit, I'm not sure how well it will work.

The whole question can generally be summed up with a "Hmmmmmmmmm"
