Well my Art teacher recently bought this car, and we've been arguing over wether or not it was a wagon or just a hatchback. I say its a wagon, but she says hatchback-she hates wagons, so she's fighting this to the end. So I want y'all to finally settle this for us. So what do you think-wagon or hatchback.

I wasn't real sure where to put this exactly but I figured this place would do...

It is clearly a wagon, me and my mom also had a debate about whether the Nissan Stegea is a SUV or wagon. Now back on topic. That car has the dimensions of a wagon, just an unusual one. Also hatchbacks wouldn't be as long.

To be specific it seems more like a liftback to me.

Poke around the wikipedia articles on the various body styles and see if you can find something conclusive.

Took your advice, I looked for the car at Wiki and found this, probably what I should of done in the first place but still.

So it is a wagon!

Sorry for wasting space with this.

Well, everything on Wikipedia is user-created of course, so I'd trust the general guidelines of the bodystyle articles more than that one specific statement.

I mean, I could hop on Wikipedia right now and change that to say "...Chevrolet will no longer offer the Malibu Maxx Hatchback."

If wikipedia says it, it must be true.

I would not say that it's station wagon, in fact at the dealership they referred to is as either a hatchback or a liftback. I can't seem to find what GM calls it but I tend to agree with the liftback statement.

So I suppose we're both wrong then. Vaguley the descriptions of the 3 types of cars are...

Liftback- A car with a hatch that is sloped.
Hatchback- A car with a hatch that is pretty much vertical.
Station wagons- To be considered a Wagon the roof of the car would have to extend fully to the end of the vehicle.

I think a wagon is best defined as having an extra window on the sides where the cargo area is, between the rear window and the rear door windows. The Malibu has a really small one of those, but the sloped rear window is more prominent.

We'd call it a hatch-back in the UK (a fugly hatch at that :yuck: )

I don't think there is a single car available today that fits that discription.

I'm not sure, thats what the wiki said and we all know wiki isn't exactly the mosy dependable source. Maybe it depends on the degree of the slope of the hatch.

A wagon should really be extended behind, the rear wheels, further than a saloon or hatchback version. I would also say that a wagon/estate is more likely to have a vertical rear window than a hatchback would.
