i always thought that was silly. that and people buying cars just because their from the same country. i can understand wanting to support your country and all that but when it gets to the point of buying an inferior car, something needs to be done...

Exactly, just like I said in my earlier post when I mentioned TW and Schuey. What you don't know, doesn't exist, so to speak.

American cars are not inferior, there are crappy ones. Hell before the J-body's died off I honestly think they were some of the worst car produced under the sun. But there are a greater number of good American cars over the amount of pure crap. And when I say good I mean, decent to f'in awesome. The same goes with Asian cars, there are good ones and there are craptastic ones, and the same goes for Euro cars.

To label a country as having crappy cars shows that you are an idiot, every car company (yes even Kia) have good cars and bad cars. You want to know why? If every car was the best possible, then the cheapest car would be like 70 grand. Think about it, Honda makes a 500hp, turbochraged, AWD, racing suspension, 6 speed manual, Civic....and thats just the base model. It wouldn't work now would it? So hence they make a crap version of it and work there way up to a nice little commuter car.

Also buying American cars supports the US economy, and don't give me this crap it doesn't. I live 5 miles from DCX's worldhead quaters, I work at GM's and Ford's is very close. Trust me, the economy in this area has plumited in the past oh say 7-8 years. I see the effects of this first hand.

Now one might say....a Civic is built in Ohio, which is true, so yes buying a Japanese car like that does go into the US economy a little, but the profit are sent back to Honda's headquaters in Japan so they can use the money there. Where as if you buy a Cobalt, the profits come to Michigan.

The only reason people don't buy American, is because some bone head told the public to think that all American cars are big, slow, and will fall apart, when that is complelty untrue.

So once again, not all American cars are crap, but there are some. Just like not all Asain cars suck, but there are sucky ones. Same goes for Europe.

So, if GM's not the best auto maker - who is? does anybody sells more autos? aren't there more foreign cars on the American market than vice versa?

Wolfe - show me where I said GM doesnt make any crappy cars, OR, show me where I said everything GM ever made, or sold, is the best ever - otherwise, grow up - the whole childish, over-exaggerating thing is a bit played out by now..

ED3 -- you sound like every other little city boy wanna-be tough guy with, let me guess a Honda hatchback--that's like a race car, yo! go double-clutch

GM does sell the most cars, but Toyota is closing fast. According the the Bloomberg article I linked here, Toyota is right behind GM in total number of sales.....

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=aMEMmHAweJXw&refer=top_world_news
Bloomberg.com Nov. 4
Toyota, which overtook Ford as the world's second-largest carmaker by sales in 2003, is closing the gap with No. 1. GM. Toyota raised its global sales forecast to 8.03 million units for the year ending in March 2006, up 8.4 percent from a year earlier. Five years ago, GM sold 8.6 million cars and trucks around the world, compared with Toyota's 5.8 million. Last year, GM sold 8.99 million.
And actually, total revenue-wise, Toyota is #1 right now. No one is making more money selling cars than Toyota right now. GM might sell the most cars, but when it comes to the heart of business, which is making money, no one beats Toyota in the auto industry.

Hilg

Thats everything. Toyota, Scion, Lexus from them. And Chevy, Pontiac, Caddy, Holden.......blah blah. You get the idea. Any vehicle sold from a Toyota brand, and any vehicle sold from a GM brand. They are very big, and make lots of money.

This isn't a knock on Chevy, or a knock against anyone here, but here is my take on this. After thinking about this for a bit after the mess in the other thread, my guess is that they are talking about "American Racing" series. Because, lets be honest, 99% of all American motorsports fans don't give a crap about F1, WRC, JGTC, DTM, PSC, or BTCC, or anything like that. Those series just don't exist to them. Here in the States, its all 85% NASCAR, 10% NHRA, and the other 5% to ALMS, CART, INDY and others.

In all of those American based motorsports, I would think Chevy has a very good chance of having the most wins. Like was said before, they have over 500 wins JUST in NASCAR. Take the other few series that they race in, and have raced in, and they do have a good chance of being tops. So, they do what you would expect any company to do. You talk about what people know, and leave out what they don't. Most in the entire world of motorsports all time??? Probably not, but who knows for sure. But, most in all American based race series all time???? Very likely.

Another thing that makes me think this is Chevy's own website. If you look at their "Motorsports" section of their website, they only list 5 race series. They list NASCAR, Craftsman TRUCKS, INDY, ALMS, and NHRA. And, they aren't even in INDY anymore. Like I said, in those big American series, and any other big ones from the past here in the states, I have no doubts that they probably have the most wins.

It makes sense really. Most, not all, but most, people who buy Chevy cars don't give a crap about those other series I mentioned. Its just like every year when the "Highest Paid Athlete" topic comes around. I bet 9 of 10 Americans say Tiger Woods. And, to them, in America, thats right. But, in the WORLD of sports figures, its Michael Schumacher. They don't know who the hell that is, so to them, its Tiger. So, most wins in motorsports to an American audience??? Theres no chance they think its Honda, Ferrari, Lotus, or Porsche. Its the bowtie in the states, so its the bowtie in their mind.

Hilg
Why can't we have clarity instead of confusion. Hilg posts a completely rational explanation, and STILL people insist on throwing fits.

Does Chevy build anything that races outside of the states? No, didn't think so. Chevywoo is obviously not a racing company. To take the ad completely out of context (ie to Europe) is a joke. It is being shown here, talking about American racing. To think that US laws would have to be applied to Chevy to prosecute them for false advertising because they didn't take pygmy go--cart races in Zimbabwe into account is SO laughable.

I swear, this is like watching a train wreck.

Well, they do race the Vette in a lot of places outside the states. But, aside from that, no, Chevy itself doesn't do much outside the states. We could talk about Holden, and GM, and the whole Aussie V8 series.....but that isn't Chevy, so its not the same.

Hilg

which is exactly, jNasty, why it would be a impossiblity for Chevy to be the winningest name...Unless of course they won EVERY event they entered...That would really be their only chance

Thank you, Hilg, for helping make my point. I'm sure you could make a complete thread on the idiocies of American ad claims presented to an international audience.

But the same would go for almost any company advertising in-country. Why are we picking Chevy apart because of it?

I don't doubt they have an ad that says this. Like I said before, in big league american based racing, they probably are way ahead of everyone else. But, like we've just mentioned, outside of the states, they just aren't there. Which leads me to believe that its not them worldwide. I really wish one of us would just find a stat somewhere to end all this. It is getting real old. We, understandably, all think different brands are the winningest. And, until someone finds a real stat or something, we are basically all right by default.

Hilg

its kinda like the world series? i dont remember the teams from zimbabwe being invited to participate, so how can it be a world series?

but someone else nailed it; americans will believe what they are told. thats the crux of the matter. this is why they think their actions won the 2nd world war.

There isn't any "stat" anywhere..

you'd have to go research all the victories for each branch of racing...because i'm sure no one's wasted their time doing that yet..

Driftster
technically..
In order for them to call themselves the "winningest name in racing" they only have to do so in one type of racing..

If subaru has the most WRC victories..they can call themselves "the winningest name in racing"....but no one would buy it..

People are "buying this" because the american market will believe anything that's fed to them..

20 dollars says this ad campaign isn't running in Germany..

Or anywhere in europe for that matter.

I saw a cadiliac today and a H2 hummer both in black with chrome rims. The caddy was very nice looking, it was in estate form so i dont know which model it is but yea very nice. I think the rims were stock and so I can actually see cadiliac creating themselves a market over here especially with the black community but theyre succes will be limited. Their major appeal at the momemnt is that they have road presence. Quite big and nice looking with the shiny rims but once quite a few people start driving about in them the novelty will wear off but yeah I think they will grow in europe or great Britain. The germans and italians anf french I dont think will go for the image.

haha europe is so far behind the times..

"road presense"
A cadillac can be seen at every intersection in the states..

Escalades are the Civic's of SUV's

In the abscence of better knowledge, EVERYONE takes what they're told at face value. And Chevy never claimed to be the best in the world. For the audience they're actually showing this to, they don't need to add "(just in America)." WE are the ones taking it out of context and applying it to the whole world. 99.9% of people will take it how it's meant. If I saw it, I wouldn't think it's a lie--I'd think they were advertising in America--WHICH THEY ARE!

And America's actions DID win WWII. If you think the UK or Russia could have done it all on their own, you're kidding yourself. Much less in the Pacific Theatre. Start another thread about it if you have to, but don't bring that into this one.

If the USA didnt help the UK you guys would have been in serious doo doo. As for us taking it out of context I can tell you that most people will indeed thinks its a figure covering the whole world. Just look at leadsled.

No, most people (in America) won't even give a thought to the rest of the world.

And before you rip on Americans, if your country was as big and as geographically and culturally isolated as America, you'd think like Americans too that yours is the only country in the world.

I'm not saying it's right--I'm just telling you why it is how it is here.

Then if they think that americas the only country in the world then they most think that chevy is the most winningest in the world.

If on tv ferrari started advertising as the most winningest comapany I would

1.look for small print.
2. If there is no think that they mean in the whole world.

why does everybody neglect the fact that there are so many more racing series in America that ANYBODY on here can find? show us that there are more series outside the states...maybe I'll believe you---as for thinking America is the only part of the world - how many European car mags do you have? how much european racing can people in America watch? when was the last time people in France saw a NASCAR race? europe is just as isolated from America as America is from Europe
people around the world refuse to watch american sports...I don't know why people loved baseball for so long, but why didnt it get big overseas? how about American football? thats a great game - unless your a pu$$y...now we see it in the newest form NASCAR - the new highest rated sport on TV in America....Europe knows no more (or less) about American sports than America knows about European sports.

History Lesson: Hitler had Sifilous (however u spell it) & that's what made him so crazy in the first place. 2nd. he spread his armies to far out -- would have been dismantled eventually anyway (without America) but europe would be ALL F---ed up if we werent there--get over it --- Hitler was cool<---that should get a funny reaction

Cleared out. Fire away.

And why do I get the feeling that Ledslead [sic] #1 was banned?

ledslead#1 as you say, had no e-mail address, why what have I said something wrong?
take a joke, man

Cheverolet, GM, pontiac, caddilac, saturn, oldsmobile, opel, seat, subaru ( 25% or something along those lines ), saab, vauxhall, buick, suzuki, holden, geo, Isuzu..

with all of that, they may have a chance, all motor sports considered.

lets keep it on topic. examples are fine, but going off topic isnt.

from a statistical point of view they are probably right in calling it the winningest brand or whatever.
however, since most of the races they enter are probably only contested by one or two other manufacturers, how relevant is that? by that i mean most of the races in which chevrolet participates are here in the US, most of them are probably circle track, nascar, drag events and so on. and ford is really the only competitor. if porsche and BMW were entered in just as many events would they still be able to make that claim.

its kinda like teh japanese claiming to be the formost sumo champions of the world. most sumo wrestling is done there, so how relevant is that? in recent competitions the grand champions have been non japanese, but statistically, if you look at how many japanese champions there have been, they would be right.

and more importantly in the races where they chevy DO compete against international brands, what is thier winning percentage.

its not as simple an answer as engine sizes vary wildly, and classes vary as a result. chevy doesnt race directly against BMW or porsche coz most races restrict engine size by classes and most racers dont want to race at a competitive disadvantage ie, against a bigger engine. if you use lemans as an example, the chevy have won, but only thier class not the race.

American football did become popular in the Uk for a while. Then the novelty wore off. We have rugby and soccer is the biggets sport in the world and number one spaort in most countries yet in america people dont care about it. As for euopean car mages we have about 25 for the UK alone. As for nascar and cart and alms we get that over here in the UK. Hardly anyone watches it though.

wow somebody else actually said GM could have a chance - maybe not directly Chevy, but GM
fact is everybody in here is just going to repeat themselves over & over, saying that Europe has more racing in it than America - & then say Americans don't know anything about Europe
so far out of everybody in here there have been a heck of a lot more American series found than anywhere else
