I have to conduct a few surveys for a school project. I hope GTPlanet doesn't mind participating.

Anyway, the question is this: Would you rather be blind or deaf? Please don't spam with smartass answers like, "Neither," etc. All you have to do is vote in the poll. I'll close up if 100 votes are exceeded; that's all I need. Think about your answer realistically and honestly, though. Thanks in advance to all those who participate.

Edit: I thought I should make something more clear after Roo's post...

You would have no possible way to fix your ailment. You are choosing to be without sight forever, or without sound forever.

I would HATTTEEEE to be blind. Sometimes I wish I was deaf for a second though:p

No but seriously, I still think being blind reaaaalllyy sucks, plus theres the special language for the deaf.

Or there's normal, everyday spoken word for the blind. And there's Braille too ;)

I chose deaf. You can get hearing aids and such for deafness, probably easier than fixing a major sight problem. Plus you can still visit GTP when you're deaf :)

I just had a thought whilst typing: do you mean fully blind and fully deaf? You can be classified blind if you have, say, tunnel vision (can only see what's in front of you, like looking through a cardboard tube). Same goes for deaf; you don't need to be entirely devoid of hearing to be classified deaf. If so, blind wouldn't be so bad. I'd probably still go with deaf though.

I chose deaf, because you can't do anything right if yo ucan't see. I know being deaf partly means you can't talk, but all I do is make car noises anyway. I wouldn't be able to hear them, but I could feel the vibrations. I could get away with flicking people off, and I might actually get laid because all the hot chicks would feel sorry for me and want to make it better.:sly:
But seriously, vision is the second most important sense that humans posses. Touch is the most important. Why? Have you ever tried to walk when your legs were numb? Exactly. If you can't feel your body, you can't create usable locomotion, you can't eat, you can't live. Hearing and smell are tied for third place in my order of importance, and taste comes dead last.

Ive got to go for deaf as well, I would hate to lose either, but if I had to lose one it would be hearing.

Regards

Scaff

Either would suck, but I could live without sound far easier than without sight and I'd still be able to enjoy more things, try watching tv with no sight, playing a computer game, admiring a beautiful woman, all things you can do wthout hearing, the main thing that I'd miss is flowing conversation and music, but what I'd miss being blind would be worse.

Tough question, but I just barely went with being deaf. Living without music would suck enormously, but being blind would be a much, much larger handicap in the real world than being deaf.

Anyone know if deaf people can drive cars legally?

I vote for deaf, because there are far too many beautiful things on this panet to see.

Several times everyday I wish I was deaf - this mainly stems from the crap that spews forth from the mouth of a female co-worker...

If deaf, you can still communicate with people through sign language. I'm not so much of a music buff that I couldn't live without it.

If you were deaf you could still feel the bassy beat of most songs, so you wouldn't be completely deprived of rythm. You'd have a basis to create your own in-head music if you remembered the beats well enough. You could still write and read if you were deaf. Try reading a car magazine when you can't see.
Ferrari, that's a case where I would be perfectly content just looking at her and not having to listen to her babble. As long as she's aesthetically pleasing, of course. You could just stare at her like an idiot, piss her off, and laugh histerically because you wouldn't care what she said. You couldn't hear her! It'd be so much fun. Then you could write to your buddies to join in and piss her off.

Wouldn't like to be neither, however being deaf is preferred to being blind in my opinion. At least you can communicate through braile or lip-reading and still have your sight, whilst deaf. Not much to substitue for blindness unfortunately.

I'm not chosing either since I'd chose dead over deaf or blind... I've been to too many concerts, had too many good talks, too many good exhibitions to chose one over the other..

Though deaf would probably be easier to deal with....

She's alright to look at, but sometimes I swear I'm getting dumber just by listening to her...

As for driving while deaf - I'm sure they'd allow competition driving. You can't hear anything but your own engine anyway. And it's oodles more fun than driving on the road anyway. 👍

Deaf.

My mum's worked with children that have either or both disabilities and from what I've heard from her the deaf ones are much luckier.

It's such a difficult question.
Either I have to look at my mother :yuck: and not hear her 👍
Or I have to listen to her speak :yuck: and not have to look at her 👍

Where is the option for both....?

Pretty confronting stuff, though if I was to lose vision or hearing under present circumstances, and I was financially secure for the remainder of my life, I’d err towards blindness. I couldn’t do without the subtleties of conversation, the ability to both create and listen to music, and the comfort of the spoken word. Both disabilities can be enormously isolating, though I feel that I’d be more alone without hearing. I value intimacy and expression over independence.

Practically speaking, it would be easier to get along in the world if you were deaf rather than blind. But I think you're safer if you're blind. Lots of things that can kill you make noise (like cars and trains). You'd easily end up blindsided :) if you were deaf, but not if you were blind.

I'd rather be able to listen to music than look at art. But I'd rather be able to see people than hear them. Also lots of things don't make noise, and it would be nice to be able to spot them anyway.

All in all, I'd go with deaf.

I don't listen that much anyways. :-p

I'd take being deaf. Awful hard to ride a bike if you're blind.

Music missing in my life would suck ass though.

Deaf. Ever walk around in your house with earplugs in? Easy. Ever walk around in your house while blindfolded? Difficult.

After seeing my shih-tzu adapt remarkably fast to not having any eyesight anymore, I'd say blind. Although I wouldn't be able to drive, I'd still get to hear all the things in life that most people take for granted. Missing out on the voices of my family and friends would drive me crazy.

Besides, If I want to be bling I can just take my glasses off.

I'm not sdaying that I'm legally blind without corrective lenses or that I know what it's like to be blind, but even going without glasses is a far departure from the norm.

THis next sentence was typed without glasses. (and I don't have the computer keys memorized... I've never done well at typing.)

I'n a gtp mwmver. I ysed to be xallrd nenglam, xot I go xy High-Test noq .

See kids – that’s why you don’t want to be blind. ;)

I dunno, once I've found a reference point with my hands I can pretty well get around without sight.

That said, almost everything I enjoy in life requires vision. Sound is way down on the scale of importance for me.

Still, I’d hate to lose either.

EDIT: You should toss in taste. I wonder if people would rather be blind of deaf than lose taste. ;)

I'm going t o type this entire post while keeping my eyes shut.

I still think I'd rather be deaf.

(opens eyes, shuts again)

Hey that was not bad... not bad at all. :)

This one's too easy. If I lost hearing, I could still go on with my life, but if I lost my eyesight, I don't know..... Also, I think I can still play basketball without hearing. People tell me to pass the ball, set the picks or whatever, I never pay attention to them anyway. :p j/k

I'd pick DVDs and TV with subtitles/captions over music, anyday. Don't forget books & videogames either! :D
