I just bought a PS3 (used) and the picture seems choppy. Especially words and what not.

To even get it working I had to reset the console, the previous owner only used HD I am using the "regular" cables I forget the name. So I am guessing it needed to be reset to get out of HD?

I am using a old TV as well, it's not special, could that be the issue? Everything else is fine. Sound is perfect, game play is smooth, no freezing or weird noises.

If it reset and you can see a picture its already out of HD mode. The regular cables are called composite. Its the minimum. I wish I could help but I've never seen PS3 in SD. I think there is an option for reduced flicker in the display options, and cross color reduction for low resolution. That may or may not help with text.

Hold down the power on button for a while until it beeps a couple of times.
I had to do this every time I changed from HDMI cable to normal cable.
Hope this helps.
:)

and you should need to check the image option. He may had choose some options to imporve for HD use (RBG settings, superwhite,....).
YOu need Superwhite enable for SD use

Well I already reset the PS3, that's how I got it to show any picture. When I got it and plugged it up it'd go on but no picture so did the 5 second hold thing, it reset, then worked fine.

Then I did a "restore" to factory settings after I could get in the menu but haven't messed with anything else. Thanks for the replies, I will look into some of the things mentioned.

Hmmm. If you did both of these things and are still having a problem, it may in fact be your TV. The only thing obvious I can think of is to maybe check the settings on your TV--play with the contrast and see if it makes any difference. I can tell you, in comparison, there's a huge difference in the picture quality between a good quality LCD or Plasma display and an older CRT. The text does indeed look a bit distorted and mushy by comparison. Maybe try it on a different TV (another CRT) just to compare it.

Yeah it's time for a new TV anyway I broke the remote to this one the other day and can't get to the menu from the buttons on the front. lol Fail.

When you say "words" are choppy are you talking about words in games or words on the main PS3 screen I have my PS3 on a HDTV with HDMI cables and when I try using the INTERNET browser on the PS3 the text isn't all that great. Also how close are you sitting to the TV as the closer you are the more you notice the choppy find a choppy picture and move back a little and see if you can tell a difference.

The PS3 menu isn't as bad I don't think as game menus.

The games themselves look fine, smaller objects seem kind of blurry, and sometimes in say GT5:P if there is a lot of cars bunched up it seems choppier, but the game play isn't slow if that makes sense. It just seems to be entirely a picture issue.

I think a new TV may really help.
