Chris Bangle quits BMW and designing cars entirely

Bangle was way ahead of his time... some of his early work is challenging (7 series), some is stunning (a 6 series on the right wheels in the right colour), although almost all only really look right in MSport trim with the consequential big wheels and extra body work.

And his influence can be seen in the design direction of a lot of other manufacturer's recent cars... Ford's 'Edge' design for example.

Damn, I've always loved the designs he came up with (except for that useless X3). The '02 7series, 6 series and Z4 had to be three of my favourites. And I still can't quite understand why people would preffer more restrained designs for BMW's... They're damn right boring.

I sure hope Mr. Hooydonk will soon be replaced by this bloke. 👍

:odd: You do know that Ford started the "Edge" design path in about 1996 when they first showed the Ka?... When was the first Bangle Bee-Em again? Cetainly wasn't the mid nineties... The only Bangle car I can think of from that long ago was the Fiat Coupe, and there's not the slightest bit of influence in any Ford from that car.

Sorry, should have used 'Kinetic design' not 'Edge design'... wrong design era!

The influence of Bangle can be clearly seen in the new Fiesta and Mondeo.

Bangle was...an artist. A sculptor, if you will. He threw his ideals of the emotion that a car should evoke onto a clay model, which became sheetmetal.

Granted, his first attempt...failed spectacularly. Hey, he was just getting the hang of "BMW." I think his later work, particularly the Z4, really came together and got him the recognition of the artist he is.

I think his last work...that rather sexy spandex-clothed car...was the definition of what he was: an automotive postmodernist, someone who played with the form of an automobile and the way light hit it, thus producing some of the most influential designs in the industry.

His designs look best in a metallic color. Usually blue or silver.

I don't understand how people don't like the 6 series;

To me it's easily one of the best looking cars on the road, especially in convertible form.
I suppose it's a 'Marmite' car, you either love it or hate it.

It's mainly just the lights on the 6-series I don't like, both in shape and how they sit a bit too low on the nose.

To me it's just unremarkable. BMW make some fantastic, focused drivers cars. The 6-series just doesn't know what it wants to be and is therefore not at the top of any of it's games. The 911 and Aston V8 Vantage and even BMW M3 do 'sporting coupe' much better. The Mercedes CLS, Audi A5 and BMW 5-series do spacious grand tourer better and cheaper too.

Just a quick comment or 2 on the 6 series as my wife had a 6 series as a company car a few years back and we have 911 now...

The 6 series doesn't really have that many direct competitors... prehaps a Jag XK. But smaller coupe's like the CLK, A5 and 3 Series just don't have the road presence of a 6 and saloons like the 5 series and CLS are a different purchase decision all together.

The 6 is a quiet, comfortable, long distance GT with big presence and a reasonable driving experience. The 911 is a hardcore sports car... also with presence, but with a rock hard ride, no space in the back and very limited refinement... but to compensate, it's very rewarding to drive.

Horses for courses.

I think it's easily one of the most hideous cars on the road. It looks wide and bloated. In addition to that it's not very interesting.

Still looks good to me. There was a convertible one at a detailing meet I went to last weekend waiting to have some wheels fitted, it looked brilliant :)

The 6-series has an horribly ugly mug and a terribly "shelf-like" ass. Nice curves in between, though.

(Last-gen) Buick Skylark front + Porsche 911/Nissan 350Z middle + Dodge Stratus rear = Current 6-series

The problem is, the Skylark was the ugliest car ever made, the Stratus looked good as a whole. But it's a Stratus!

Don't worry, I like the 6, so you're not alone. I think it's a gorgeous car, esp. in M-form.

I'm with Mog on this also. I really love the shape of the 6 series... one of my all-time favourite looking cars. 👍

That leaves me in no-mans land then, because I neither love nor hate it, I just think it's nothing special! The grille is too big - if cars have faces, then that grille is the equivalent of a big, bulbous nose on an overweight gentleman. The overweight thing is an issue for me too. How BMW managed to design a coupe that looks more bulky than the equivalent saloon (5 series) I'm not entirely sure.

One thing always amused me about the 6-series though, and that's the rear end. I just can't shake the feeling that Bangle was penning the car, happily forming his shapes, when another designer comes up to him.

"Err... boss, don't you think that shape is a bit... familiar?"

Cue hasty extra scribbles to give it a boot...

Why don't I like the 6 design? Let me count the ways....

The aforementioned rear-shelf... where you want the 6 to be masculine, the way the lines droop around the tail are quite emasculating. The shelf itself is unobjectionable... what they did to the rear lights to emphasize it, is.

2007-bmw-m6.jpg

The way that hood cut line doesn't square up to the bumper line. I know that's to break up the visual weight of the front bumper and the hood, to keep either from looking too massive, and it works, but it creates an uncomfortable intersection of lines at the headlights that just never gets resolved.

The headlights themselves. It's the reverse of monocle eye, it's droopy eye.

The lower grille. Mazda is starting to do this... going all "happy face" on us. It's true that people automatically associate car fascias with faces... which is why mono headlights don't work, why the grille is still in the middle, and why headlight desigh has remained rather conventional, over the years. But I don't understand why car desgners now assume that people want cars that look like they're half-assed drunk and giggly happy at the same time.

And the BMW 6-series does them one worse by being cross-eyed, as well.

AND echo homeforsummer: how they got such a sleek, low-slung car to look so fat is astonishing.

Now compare it to the Z4:
bmw-z4-0729.jpg

With the Z4, they took more liberties with the shape, and they managed to make those radical design cues make sense.

There's an electric, almost sensual flow to the lines... flame-surfacing works here because it's actually put into context. The headlights actually work.

About the only criticisms I have are the unresolved issues with the rear end (cured in the coupe) and the BMW grille itself. One wonders how much better the Z4 would look with a Jaguar XK grille, instead... :dopey:

The problem with the design direction of BMW is not the radical-ness of Bangle's ideas, but the inability of his design team to implement them in a meaningful way. The new 3 is a step in the right direction, a tightrope act between adventure and restraint, and the new X5 looks great. I just hope they do something to resolve the front ends of the 5- 6- 7- and the sides of the 1- series for the next model change.

The Z4 Coupe is a very successful design, one of the best looking BMWs in years to my eyes. And yet, I'm not keen on the cabrio version at all. I think the roof on the coupe balances out the entire shape, neither the front nor rear work for me on the cabrio but both gel brilliantly in the coupe.

And a pic I took:

I actually think the shape looks even better in the non-M versions. Less agressive for sure, but the design looks even tidier.

Oh, and I quite like the current 3-series too, especially in Alpina and M3 forms. More photos of mine:

But again, I'm not as keen on the 3-series coupe, as it's a bit dull...a bit toned down, with no real interesting details to catch the eye.
