Here is a link to some pictures of My latest projest. My "PlaySeat"

http://cid-0fe59a80129c28d3.photos.live.com/browse.aspx/My PlaySeat

I will add some captions to the photos so that anyone who wants to build this can do so. In the mean time you can PM me and I will answer any questions you have. All I can say is it works great and is very stable and strong. There is extra room for you phone, drink, whatever so you want so you will never have to leave your seat. The chair is fully adjustable front to back as well as adjustable recliner etc. The chair and plywood assembly is fairly heavy but everything else is made of PVC and is very light. Unfortunately is is not collapsable for storage as I intended it to be a piece of "Furniture" at least for quite a while as we are all waiting for GT5 to come out, and it will certainly not get put "away" anytime soon!

Hope you enjoy the pictures.
Cheers.

Welcome to :gtplanet:, although I have moved this thread to the correct forum

Nice work 👍

I've had reserves about PVC, but your design looks like it won't flex too much. Mind if I ask how much the PVC/fittings cost?

Hey man, how is the seat? Is it one of those generic chinese seats? I plan on buying me one of those to build my rig like you did, but I'd like to know if those seats are confortable for long racing sessions.

The parts cost about 175.00 at Home Depot. returned a few left over PVC pieces that I returned for more paint. The PVC by itself was $20.00 for the lengths 8) 10ft pieces and the elbows and tees were about another $40.00 since they are about .57 cents a piece. The cost could be less if you found the right corners as I had to use two pieces many places instead of one. It is sitting on a piece of carpet wiich is also enough to dampen any vibrations. Everything you feel is comming from the Wheel itself. The design is very sturdy and still light. The heaviest part which is pretty heavy is the seat and plywood assembly.

There are captions now with the pictures that will help aide in building this project. There are some dimensions and I will add more in therms of a parts list and prices etc.

I paid $150.00 for the seat from O'Riely Auto Parts (Kragen)

It is Universal in that both sides have the same controls and the seat is sold singularly instead of in pairs. I could find stuff chesper on line but whaen you add shipping, and the fact that you cant see the item is why I went with the local purchase.

It should be as comfortable as any other seat, but it is too early to tell. so far so good. sat in in for about 3 hours last night and all was good.

I added a seat belt. Just wanted to make sure I dont fall out! Here is a picture of the finished project. I had to ad a "Roll Bar" to support the shoulder strap.

For some reason the frame looks like it is sagging in the center but this is just the way the picture cam out it is actually very close to square in all direcions.

The seat belt actually helps in driving in that i seem to move arount quite a bit without it and it also helps to stay focused on longer races.

Here is the link to the rest of the pictures. They are newly added to the bottom with captions.

Enjoy!

First post on the site...

I've preordered GT5 and have my steering wheel (G27) in route. Just wanted to say I'm searching for cockpit buildups and this one is really outstanding.

One question. How happy are you with the way the shifter is placed?? I'm all about mounting it lower like yours is, but I dont want to have to 'reach' for it. I want it right there....just like my real one is in my '06 mustang.

Thanks for posting and all the info to build it. I've narrowed my possible builds so far to this one and one other. And thats after going through 75 pages...so looks great.

Really nice setup man! Are you planning on mounting the pedals or do they work like that?

Interesting looking build 👍

I've been contemplating creating something similar out of PVC pipes myself. I came to the conclusion that i would probably spend time and money on building it only to find that i could never get it ridged enough. Your thread dispels that myth for me. 👍 👍

I don't require the seat section, lack of space means the sofa will have to make do for that, but at least i now know i can put together a wheel/pedal stand out of that material.

have you glued or bolted the pipes and fittings together or just used their natural connectivity?

I am very happy with the placement I custom built it to the same specs and dimensions as my nissan so it would feel normal for me. Note that the seat is also adjustable and will effectively change the position of the shifter slightly just as it would in your car.

I modeled my design after looking at several others and went from there. I liked the PVC idea as it is very easy to work with and cut with a PVC cutter. Making adjustments is easy and it is cheap and strong.

Thanks for the kudos. 👍

For me this setup has been fine I don't notice that it is not mounted from the top. Feels normal to me and I did not want to take it apart just yet. I would try it mounting like I did without taking it apart. See if you like it and if you do at least that way you have not voided your warranty. If you still feel like it would be better mounted the other way then at least you have tried both and can compare and formulate your own decision as to which works best for you. I hope this helps. 💡

No I just hammered it together so it can be taken apart if necessary. I does loosen up a bit after a while but I just slam it back it place with a hammer with a cloth over it. It would have been better to use the PVC glue that I bought but it would never come apart again without cutting it.
