I'm fairly new to GT. I pretty much completed Prologue except the very last race but really haven't played it in over a year. I race with the racing line on. I'm not good enough to run without it. I have gotten a lot better in just the last few days I have had the game but I know I am no where near the level of a lot of you guys. My question is I always seem to hit somebody especially at the start of the race trying to get to the front. In close races I am always bumping in the turns. Is it possible to complete all the races without hitting another car? I am working on driving clean so if I ever do the online events I am not hated. But sometimes in my desperation to get gold i feel like I have to bounce of the AI's to stay competitive. On some of the races if I'm not in an over powered car it seems like if I don't get the jump in the first few turns I will never catch the AI. Once they get so far ahead of me I quit. Am I just being impatient? Other times they seem to brake too soon before the corner and I smack the back of them. It doesn't effect the game play but it makes me feel like I am not racing cleanly. Any suggestions would help. Or maybe it is just a practice makes perfect thing.

Yes, it is possible to drive cleanly and win the race. Practice makes perfect. Are you using a wheel? that will help considerably to smooth driving IMO

Driving cleanly and winning events is possible in this, unlike prologue.

I'd be interested to know the answer to that too.

Given that professional racer's lap times can match up between GT5 / real-life, I wonder if to race cleanly and achieve their lap times, do we have to match their skill level? Or is the AI's lap times slowed down so we don't?

If not, that's very much a real racing simulator. To win without such a skill, gamers would have to either choose a more powerful car or drive differently (e.g touch other cars on some corners).

Personally I think like you said, it's a practice makes perfect thing. And as someone mentioned, a wheel certainly helps with that. I know I've also used other cars braking early on corners to my advantage though.

As a simulator, 1st should be a monumental achievement that not even the best of real life racers can be sure they'll get. But as a game, we often expect to finish in the top 3 positions, or we soon get frustrated. I think this conflicts with the simulation idea.

Should Gran Turismo push clean driving even further, but at the same time make it enjoyable to finish in anything but last place?

Imagine if finishing GT5 was not unlocking all the events, cars etc, but to come first in a race?

Yu Suzuki's Ferrari 355, which I remember reading is Kaz's idol of a driving game, required a lot more effort and practice to win at. But then again such a game has a very limited market, so I guess it's a question of striking a balance between the "real driving simulator" and a game that the most players possible can enjoy. Perhaps this is why qualifying wasn't included. Personally I would have liked it as an option though.

Spending enough time with the driving line and practicing the tracks will certainly help you to prevent crashing, it will also save you loads of money in the later levels from repair costs.

But as for clean driving online, it is almost non existent. I play nordschleife and tsukuba online frequently, and it turns into a demolition derby on the first corner, you are plowed strait into the wall by other players.

I do use a GT wheel. I guess I just need to be patient and not worry so much about being the first out of the turn if it means ramming everybody in front of me. I do remember in Prologue when I was looking for advice on winning the last race many people said I had to hit other cars a little and cut through certain areas of the track.
