I have been having major freezing issues with my 120gb HDD for several months. Every time I push the center guide button it would freeze for 45 seconds to a minute every time. Plus the dashboard blades would not load for a good minute or two. I even put my HD on Heathers 360 with the exact same freezing results. So at that point I knew it was the HD. So I tried several things mentioned in the xbox.com forums and the only thing that instantly helped was clearing the cache.

This is how to clear the cache.
1. Go to the dashboard
2. My xbox
3. System blade all the way to the right
4. Memory
5. Highlight the Hard drive and hit the Y button. Do not format your hd!!!
6. Next hit X, X, LB, RB, X, X
7. This message should appear. "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"
8. Click yes and it should only take about 1 second

I suppose there is no way to de-frag the HDD on Xbox?

oh, hell. knowing Micro$oft, there's probably full mainenence BS on those 360's that they can't print in the manual cause Bill Gates wants more money or something. and why didn't I think of that, anyway? heck windows needs constant maintenence, why wouldn't a 360? wonder if some of people's RROD's could have been prevented...

Oh yeah for sure they could have been at least reduced probably not prevented since these 360s are such a piece of crap. When you dont clear the cach, especially on a 120gb hd, It puts a LOT of strain on the entire 360. Mainly because it is freezing every time you pull up your guide button or whenever you visit the dashboard. I could not believe how much my 360 froze because of the HD, then I cleared the cache and its was like a new 360.

Well, I think clearing the Cache is deleting all the updates and what not, I may be wrong on this one.

The cache is the memory on the hard drive that stores information for easy use later on when it is needed. The CPU's cache and the HDD's cache has to work together to load the files and games you want off the HDD. I believe what could be happening is that the CPU cache is faster than the HDD's cache; that the HDD cache can't keep up. You can read here on why the hard drive has a cache. The cache helps to reduce the read and write times.
