Dance Commander was awarded the Judge's Choice award last week, and as such he
selected this week to be a Graphics Week.

Bonkmeister won the public vote, and the theme this week is Gumball 3000!

Further explanation of theme, which is chosen by Week 06 Winner, Bonkmeister:

"For this weeks theme I want you all to get busy with one of the most amazing car events in the world, the
Gumball 3000. If you haven't heard of it, I suggest to look it up, because you are missing out on something.

I just want your entries to fit in the spirit of Gumball 3000: Extraordinary rides, driving a crazy distance
in just one week and just make it one big party. For the rest you are all free to create whatever you want
within the graphics set of rules: posters, party announcements, roadplans, advertisments, documentary/
movie posters, you name it. You're also free to create an imaginary edition or base your entry on an existing
edition of the event."

There you have it folks, hit up Google and check out the Gumball Rally, and get Photoshopping!

And remember...
Be creative and have fun!

not exceed 500 pixels in either direction. This includes borders or drop shadow effects.
[*]Winner of the public vote gets to choose the theme for the following week.
[*]Public vote winners also get to select the top 12 entries for the poll the following week.
[*]When selecting the top 12 entries the following week, the theme chooser will also select a
"Judge's Choice" winner, the entry which they feel has best captured the theme.
[*]The Judge's Choice winner gets to choose whether the following week will be either a
Graphics Week or a Manipulation Week.
[*]A graphics week will be primarily graphic design and layout based, for example magazine
    covers, or movie posters.
[*]A manipulation week will be primarily based on photo manipulation, for example creating
race cars in game, or making multi-car composites.
  • Winners cannot enter in their own theme!

Being a Photoshop competition, there are no limits on editing. Use every tool at your disposal to
create the desired effect. Feel free to utilise HDR techniques, photo stitching, whatever you like!
Your only real restriction is that you must use some part of a GT5 Photomode image!
The main thing to remember is to be creative and have fun!

Hope this weeks theme isnt too vague for people, I just wanted to create a theme that isn't restricted, giving people much freedom about their format.

That was my main worry, even though my friends and most people I speak about cars all know about the Gumball 3000, I wasnt sure if everyone knows about the event, but I think everybody thats into cars should know.

But to give a short description: The Gumball 3000 is a notorious event, which isnt just a race/competition, but more of a lifestyle. It's more about joining then winning. Every year they pick a route between major cities and get a crazy driving schedule together. For the Europeans, in 2007 they went from London all the way to Istanbul and back in just 1 week time. In 2009 they drove from coast to coast, the following route: Los Angeles - Las Vegas - Santa Fe - Grand Canyon - Dallas - New Orleans - Orlando - Miami, also in just 1 week.

Like I said, its not an official rally or something, it takes place on public non-closed roads, where most of the competitors drive full-speed. And when they aren't driving, they are partying.

The high entrance fee, usually around 25,000 GBP per car, makes it more exclusive though and you see it about the cars that enter: exotics, super cars, hot oldtimers and other extraordinary cars such as the Sambabusses, Caterhams and Hummers. Several celebrities entered, including the Jackass crew a few years ago (they made a documentary about it, its on some of the Jackass boxsets).

If you don't know what to check, go to their official site (http://www.gumball3000.com/), that already gives you a good impression of the event. Else try watch it on Youtube.

And like it already says in the description, the format doesnt matter, a poster for the event, an advertisement related to the rally, roadmaps, you name it.

We can make movies?! How does that work?

Dang it, I knew I made mistakes in the first description :p

I meant covers/posters for a documentary/movie about the Gumball.

If Rev would be so kind to add that part to the description :)

Aaaw, I was getting my hopes up there!

It would be fine by me, but there are just a few problems with that:
- I dont know if its possible to transfer replays to your XMB
- If that is possible, it doesnt quite fit into graphics week IMO
- Besides, its the Photoshop competition. Movie editting doesnt qualify for that.

But the idea of it is actually pretty cool. If replays can be transferred to your XMB, then it might be possible to start a video editting competition some day.

well tbh anyone that calls themselves a 'car fan' and doesn't know about Gumball should be ermm...shot! lol

dunno if i'll enter this, idea's areb't really flowing in my head here, think i've half of one tho....need to work on it i think 💡

Okay, here it is, my final entry to be beaten by Mog/GPR/Sixtoes. Careful, the full view is aorund 4MB thanks to Paint.net having horrible saving compression issues.
Final Entry
Gumball 3000 2012: Out with a Bang, a 13 Stop world tour traveling over 10,000 Miles.

Ah crap, my ctrl c must of not of registered when i copied the fullsize.

Whats keeping you guys from entering? Or are some of you working on something?

Gtuned's entry is already a good example of a legit entry. Just be creative. I don't mind Gtuned winning this one, it will be a worthy winner, but I want to have a hard time in picking a winner too :p

I'm working on mine but it takes some time.
Also, I've encountered some technical and creative setbacks :p

Don't worry, I will have an entry. I normally don't have enough time out of work till Saturday though

4 days left to sort this, not even sure thats enough time to get something worthy of entering done, i've really busy with work n stuff this week so i might not get an entry don for this, if i don't is there any rules against posting what my idea(s) was in text just?

That's an outstanding idea and a real challenge.
Being in the design branch, I can tell you that a job like this takes a lot of time. But in my opinion it will be worth it.
What about s t r e t c h i n g the schedule?
As one can see some of us may seem to be indifferent – or simply running out of time...
I'd like to thank Bonkmeister for the inspiring idea: keeps me sleepless:nervous:

Well, time has been an issue in this competition lately.

In the Car Meet Poster week, the deadline got extended by 1 week and it only resulted in 1 more contestant, last week a few people got time issues as well, but it wouldnt be fair towards people who entered in time to extend the deadline by just 1 day for others.

But also in this competition time stays an issue. I'm not the one to decide, thats Revolution, but I think something should be done about it after all.

Wouldn't it be an idea to let this competition run from monday to monday, so everybody has the full weekend. I don't know if that adds enough time for people with time issues.

Else maybe future competitions should all be 2-week comps. The 1 week extension during the Car Meet Poster week wasnt that much of a succes, but that might've been because it was only announced after 1 week. Maybe that withdrew people from the beginning, who thought 1 week wasnt enough, so they didnt get started in the first place. Maybe it's more interesting for people if they know upfront they have 2 weeks time.

Like my point was at the Movie Poster week, I'm not a fan of adjusting the rules during a competition, that still wouldnt be fair towards people who finished their entries in time, but we can't deny that many people in the Photoshop competitions have problems with the time. Maybe give it a try next competition, to start with a 2 week deadline from the beginning and see how that turns out entry-wise?

And I woulnd't mind by extending this weeks competition, but only if Gtuned and others that are currently working their asses off to get something proper before sunday feel comfortable with it, thats my main concern by bending the rules while a competition is running.

Anyways, nothing is really my call, but these are my thoughts, but I think we need to look into this issue again.

Speaking of more time - I found a little and put my meager skills to use.

edit - for some strange reason I was thinking it was a manipulation week. Oh well, enjoy the psychedelic challenger anyway.

Hmm, well I'm open to ideas to 'fix' the problem. I'm not opposed to having a two-week deadline for themes which need it, I just feel like sometimes the 'larger' themes are not entered by many people because of the amount of work required for a entry, and the chances of them entering are low regardless of how long the entry period is for. I think this is evidenced by the car meet poster week, the extra time only garnered one extra entry, although this may well have been because the extension was only granted as the 'initial' week finished.

Hmm, I currently put up the new poll and entry thread on a Monday afternoon here in Australia, I thought I was just about clear of the weekend for most people.. if you guys think it'll help, I can easily push it back another day and end the thread Tuesday morning/afternoon? I'm in GMT+10:30 at the moment (daylight savings!).

I'm open to discussion though, if anyone has ideas or suggestions on the best way to get more entries, then I am all ears :)

I think we should try a 2 weeks competition. Time is an issue for some people but that's not the only reason for the lack of entries. As Rev said, some themes need more work than others. Take the movie poster week, I started working on something but couldn't see the end of it because of my limited Photoshop skills. It was just too hard for me that week and I'm sure it was for others too.
More time won't solve everything but I say we should give it a go ;)

Revolution.: I get your point, also about that extra week, but like its said before, some people didnt enter at first sight, because they felt 1 week was too short. When the 1 week extension was announced, those people still felt they couldnt make it, because they haven't started in the first place and then they still would have 1 week. Chances are that if they knew it was 2 weeks at the beginning, it would've been different. Thats my vision on this, but I could be wrong too. Maybe just test out a 2 week window from the beginning and see what difference that makes?

I think the best thing to do is await responses from more people with time issues on this one and see what they see as the best solution.

I think 1 week is fine. partly for the reason that if it was made a 2 week deadline most of those that thought 1 week was too short would probably only start work the second week anyway, still only having a week. A couple of hours on a Saturday is enough for me...

Hmm, well I'm not averse to trying it, next big-ish theme we get I'll make it a two week-er. It won't be next week (... as I think I'll be picking the theme ;)) but maybe the week after. I'll close this current week off on Tuesday afternoon my time, that should give everybody here the full weekend to hopefully knock out an entry.

Any objections?

Nah that's fine with me. The longer i think i can win the better XD

I think the reason people don't enter is definitely because of the theme and not because of the lack of time. Sometimes it could be because of time, but most likely it's because of the theme. So I don't think making a certain theme 2 weeks long is going to increase the number of entries. You might get one or two more, but that's it. I think we would all enjoy it more when we get a new theme every week. Then we don't have to wait as long for the next theme! And we are all excited when a new theme is about to open up, am I right?

But that's not to say that the theme this week is a bad theme, but it's just not an attractive theme for everyone. It's a bit unknown, and it's tough to get ideas. I don't want to have to research a theme so that I know what it is. I know what the gumball rally is and I have heard about it, but I don't "Really" know what it is. I'm not going to enter this week because I am not really up for the theme. But when the themes are to actually manipulate an image, like the limousine theme, there were bunches of entries, because it's way more fun than making a poster or an add or something along those lines. It's more about photoshop talent and less about design talent. I know this competition is about both, but people enjoy it more when they can flex their photoshop skills instead of mulling over design elements. Maybe that's just how I feel, but the entries and entrants speak for themselves.

But that's just my two cents.
